I spent today on the Lilac from 8:30am to 4:45pm volunteering. Mary gave me a wonderful orientation. Great experience. Will return. I'd heard about the Lilac and visiting it was somewhat accidental. I wanted to go to Pier 26 and see what the hoopla was about. I knew the Lilac was at then next pier (25). I was not impressed with Pier 26 but could see the Lilac from that pier so I went over for a closer look. It was larger than I had imagined. I'd seen snippets of it in River Project videos. It had much more covered and uncovered outside space and much more inside space than I had imagined. I had the good fortune of conversing with Mary Habstritt from the pier. I've signed up to volunteer on the ship and expect to be there this Sunday 10/18 from 9am.

I've visited several times and I'm on the mailing list for this fine vessel. They are always in need of volunteers and there is a lot to be done to get this wonderful vessel up and running, which is one of the hopes in the endeavor. It was great that she was saved from the scrapyard and she is the only vessel of her kind, a buoy and light tender, still intact in the US. She also makes a wonderful sight to see along our waterfront---something NYC has far too little of for a city that owes her very existence to her maritime past (not to mention that she is an island city).

I didn't actually plan to come here, but was in the area for the free kayaking and decided to stop by on a whim. No disappointments, the volunteers were wonderful and it was a great learning experience! Definitely check it out if you're in the area and have free time.
