Because of the pandemic, I would have thought that church life and upkeeping the faith would be extra challenging. But the parish of Calvary St. George's seemingly seamlessly moved their operations virtually, making their service accessible to myself and countless others. They've grown a lot since I've joined only a year ago, but they're not a church that would allow that to get to their ego, or change their fundamental message. Which is to get the gospel right, before getting the gospel out.

I've heard many sermons from many places over my life, but the message I get here is unique, and feels a blessing to hear. It carries with me through the week, it can't be helped -- it's hard not to crave coming back.

The people who go there and also those who run the parish are some of the most naturally warm and welcoming types of people I've ever met. There's no doubt God works through this parish. I feel a real happiness to be here, and grateful to have found this place.

Bonus, the music alone is worth absorbing and losing...

As regarding the Common Table (soup kitchen downstairs on Thursday afternoons from 12 noon to 1 pm) a very lovely operation presided over by caring volunteers. Seating is at tables arranged in long aisles. Two lines form before noon and after a short inspirational prayer, hot, home-made food and a fresh, tossed salad are served from one table while piping hot soup is served from another. Tea, coffee, lemonade and water are available and I believe it safe to say the variety of desserts offered -- including long lines of cakes, muffins, cookies, pies and occasionally ice cream -- is greater here than at any of the scores of similar venues in the entire city of New York. First-rate operation; satisfying food served in generously portioned sizes; a cozy atmosphere inside a below-ground...

The meaning of the Gospel as truly Good News is made crystal clear each Sunday in this wonderful parish. All of the clergy are superb preacher-scholars who penetrate the Biblical text to reveal its truths, making it relevant and accessible. The glorious Anglican liturgy is done with simplicity, beauty and dignity, without affectation. The incomparable director of music assembles top-notch musicians to render an eclectic range of music which ever fails to illuminate and enhance the themes of the message of each service. Parishioners here are a diverse group of warm, loving people seeking God. I am so grateful to have...

I’ve been attending St. George’s for nearly 14 years, and can honestly say that I hope to attend for the next 14 years. Having been raised in a more conservative tradition (read: do-it-yourself Christianity), St. George’s was the first church I ever attended where the Gospel message I was hearing really felt like “good news.” Since then, St.G’s became my home, and I feel more a part of the community than ever, as the people there attend not because of shared politics, class, or interests, but because of a shared view that we’re all sinners saved by grace.
