I am disabled but can walk some w/out assistance or walker. Amtrak is way understaffed. The man who accepts the ticket to approximately 2 coaches has to make sure everyone is seated in the correct seat, take care of your carryone luggage, any problems that may arise in his designated coaches, take food orders in disabled coach (1 only for disabled passengers) & other coach(s), PLUS this 1 person has to CLEAN the 4/5 restrooms! REALLY!! This person handles our food & cleans the bathrooms too. This person is way over worked. On the ride home (from wa state to l a), it was horrible. The or passengers boarding would just rush on the train like stampeding cattle & crashed into our coach & sit in any empty seat at every or stop; plus northern ca, too. They just threw their baggage anywhere. My new piece of luggage now has 2 holes in it. The handicap bathroom is not marked that way. It says bathroom w/braille marking underneath. The regular bathrooms (approx 4) were in the hall. Their bathroom sign is not facing out in the entrance area to the hall where they are. It's in the hallway. EVERYONE used the handicap bathroom because it was the first one they say. One time I waited & waited to use the bathroom, knocked on the door w/no response. Eventually a young couple (guy & gal) exited that bathroom. That room isn't that big for 2 people. Women who have ridden amtrak many times said this was the worse trip they'd ever taken w/amtrak & probably would not use amtrak again.
I called customer relations w/amtrak & told them of all the problems & asked them to have a representative call me. The rep told me that no one would return my call but they would try to improve their service in the future.
I didn't mention that the man who took care of our coach was soooooo busy that the first day he only came at dinnertime to take our food orders. The 2nd day he did come 3 times (breakfast, lunch & dinner). I'm diabetic & I didn't bring fruit or nuts to snack on between meals. When we didn't get lunch service, i went to their cafe. The cafe only sold mainly junk food. They did sell sandwiches, hamburgers & hot dogs (the type you get at 7-11). The only things they sold that I was suppose to eat was coffee & milk. No trip to wa from l a, totally different experience.on mythat will kill others. I felt so disrespected. w/a sign so people were always staring into our coach thru the window in the door. One woman was walking to the stairs to the top level (right by our door entrance) & opened our door, made the following statement: my granddaughter is nosy. Then before the door closed, I heard her say to the child: it's for old people who can't walk upstairs & things like that.
I've never been treated so I felt as if i have a terrible disease that will...
Read moreI love taking the train for medical appointments rather than driving. The staff at the Sacramento station have been, for the most part, unhelpful and just plain rude. I am disabled and existed then 8 told that a train had already left and no, they would not take me to the platform on the cart. My train was gone, despite what the app said. As soon as I gave up, I saw my train pulling away. I could have made the train with time to spare had she helped. Instead, I had to transfer my ticket and drive.
Several regulars are using the computer trains that are blind. I have witnessed one lady smack into several things as the staffer failed to help her. I almost jumped in but said the staffer is not incredibly friendly. As I got to my ride, I saw the woman crying in her car as she recounted the story to her friend. (Other staffers have been better with blind passengers.)
This last time, I was asked to get off of the cart to allow an older couple by the same male staff member. I left the cart with my daughter and our bags and started to limp away. The driver started calling after me, asking if I wanted to wait for him to return because he saw my limp. I answered back that the limp is always there, and that I would rather struggle with my mobility disorder and pain than wait for an inconsiderate driver that should have asked the couple to wait. I had to stop halfway during the walk to platforms that are conspicuously far from the station itself. My body hurt for days after having to make that walk after an invasive pain procedure. It was me crying that time in the car.
It is time to do better, Amtrak. More people would ride if stations along the corridor were friendly to us with disabilities. (1 minute boarding...
Read moreI've done the corridor and I've done the Zephyr... This time I did the coast starlight 14 up to Oregon.... I'm never take this train again.
What's good? Lots of leg room, seats recline well albeit a pain to raise the leg rest...
What's bad? Nasty restrooms... Nor are they stocked... PLUS... None of the door locks work. They did announce that people should knock first, in case someone "forgot" to lock their door... Um... They simply do not lock and I was walked in on twice because people can't follow directions 😒
Then there's the dining car... This time I'm doing coach... And I know that the sleepers get seated first overall, but I've never had of coach not being able to eat. Breakfast was a bit of a joke, so I went to the snack bar for breakfast. Then they announce that they only have lunch for 1st class because somehow they managed to "overbook" a finite number of sleepers??? But they're sorry that coach can't be served. Isn't that freaking special. The café was closed as well. And it's not like stops are long enough for people to get anything to eat... So unless you brought food with you vs planning on eating in the dining car, or the café you drew SOL!
And of your bed to charge something, it's a crap shoot. Their electricity keeps blowing a fuse 😒 Makes one feel safe doesn't it?
Plus the train was over an hour late leaving... And of course, we'll be late getting in... Don't know about others, but I'm glad I'm not diabetic!
Yeah... Screwing over coach does not make me go, "oh, next time il ve to do a sleeper again"... I will simply go back to flying or driving. If you don't want to serve coach, post it on your damn...
