Seal Rock in La Jolla was beautiful today. A double-tiered set of steps takes you down to a fairly small sandy beach, surrounded by a steep hillside & cliff above.
Forecast today in La Jolla called for mostly cloudy skies all day. So glad we ignored this and drove down. Abundant sun highlights the turquoise water color near this tapered beach. It was almost high tide when we arrived, shrinking the beach area. We found a spot along the moss-colored cliff and set up our chairs.
When I began taking pictures, waves were sneaky, and would nip at your ankles or worse, if you lost focus. Waves were churned up & coming in diagonally from 2 directions offshore. Occasionally these competing waves would strike eachother, creating whitewater spray, which hurtled skyward.
The ocean was rough here today, and we witnessed the lifeguard rescue a woman in the tumultuous surf offshore.
Seals sunning themselves on Seal Rock were funny to watch. Every few seconds, a splash from a wave would strike them, causing them to lift their back flippers & head. This happened repeatedly.
Cormorants fished between the shore & Seal Rock, sometimes surfacing with small fish they caught. Pelicans flying in V-Formations soared by us. 2 of them dropped out of the sky bill first, with a splash, in search of fish.
