A Taste of Authentic India in San Francisco: My Gushing Review of Jalebi Street
Jalebi Street is not just a restaurant; it's a culinary teleportation device. Stepping into their San Francisco location, I was immediately transported back to the vibrant, aromatic streets of North India. While their reputation for incredible street food precedes them, I was genuinely blown away by the authenticity and quality of every dish I tried. My journey began with the Onion Kachori (Pyaj Kachori), and it was a revelation. Unlike the often dense and oily versions I've had elsewhere, these were perfectly flaky and crisp on the outside, giving way to a beautifully spiced and savory onion filling. The accompanying chutneys were the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, elevating an already perfect snack into a truly memorable starter. Next came the main event: the Chole Bhature and Bedmai Poori. The chole was a masterclass in flavor—rich, thick, and perfectly spiced with a depth that can only come from slow simmering. The bhature were light, fluffy, and perfectly puffed, with a delicate crispness that made them a joy to tear and scoop. The bedmai poori, a rare find in the Bay Area, was equally impressive. The savory lentil filling in the poori was a delightful surprise, and its heartiness paired with the tangy aloo sabzi was a match made in heaven. Every bite felt like a comforting, home-cooked meal. And then, for the grand finale: the Jalebi Rabri. This is the dish that gives the restaurant its name, and it lives up to every bit of the hype. The jalebis were an absolute work of art—crispy on the outside, juicy with just the right amount of saffron syrup, and not overly sweet. Paired with the cool, creamy, and cardamom-infused rabri, it was a dessert that hit all the right notes. The contrast in temperature and texture was simply divine, making it the perfect end to a flawless meal. Jalebi Street has earned its place as a must-visit for anyone craving genuine, high-quality North Indian street food. The flavors are bold, the textures are perfect, and every dish feels like it's been prepared with genuine passion. I cannot recommend this place enough and am already planning my next trip back to explore the rest of their...
Read morePathetic service, the lady owner clearly doesn’t know how to run a restaurant, she was running around like a headless chicken. The boxes are all over the restaurant. Food was really good but that’s not all that you expect from a restaurant in SF.
Edit-
Wow, what a response. Instead of taking responsibility, you’ve written a whole sob story about how hard it is to run a restaurant, as if customers should feel sorry for you. Let me remind you: your place has been open for over 6 months that’s more than enough time to figure out basic service, organization, and atmosphere. Calling yourself a ‘new restaurant’ forever doesn’t excuse sloppy management and chaos everywhere.
And about your ‘deep experience in business and hospitality’? Honestly, it was nowhere to be seen when I visited. Running around aimlessly and leaving boxes all over the dining area isn’t called experience, it’s called poor management. Customers don’t pay to watch you flail around like it’s your first day on the job they pay for good food and good service. You’re not doing anyone a favor by being ‘tired’ or working late; that’s literally the business you chose to be in.
Instead of lecturing your paying guests to come ‘shadow you for a day,’ maybe take a long, hard look at how many other restaurants in SF manage to serve great food with professionalism, without hiding behind excuses. Nobody cares how late you eat your dinner or how overwhelming your week is people care about the experience they get when they step into your restaurant.
So stop blaming the hustle, stop writing essays to justify failure, and start running the restaurant the way it should be run. Until then, don’t expect customers to treat incompetence like it’s some...
Read moreWent to this place with very high expectations :) I wanted to try out their Jalebi, onion kachori, aloo poori etc.
The place was average at best currently. Hoping they will scale and get better.
1- portion size was just too small all across. For example. Only 5 pani poori in a plate which I have never seen. Size of kachori was also very small. I didn’t feel satiated. I think I would be open to paying more but I want a decent portion size so I feel that I ate something.
2- The service was very slow. We weren’t full ( given the portion sizes ) so we wanted to order more food. Took 10 mins for someone to take the order and another 10 mins for it to prepare.
3- taste was average. Nothing extraordinary except Jalebi which was AMAZING. Ambiance is also average.
4- one other thing that bothered me the most. This is the main reason I am writing this review. There weren’t any servers when I dined in. The two owners were managing it. They were serving as well as cleaning. I saw one the owners clean the table , go to the kitchen and get the food. Not sure she washed her hands in between :) may be she did, but def felt a bit uneasy.
I do want to call out that this is a new family run establishment so they can definitely improve once...
