I took my kids here around 11am on Monday and was greeted at the door by Casper. He was very nice, knowledgeable, talkative, and engaged my kids in conservation about history. We spent about an hour there and had a lot of fun. You can walk up the winding stairs to the tower which my kids liked. The model trains see so cute and give you a real look into what Suffolk was like in 1907. Casper walked us through everything and answered all our questions. We also talked about other historical locations worldwide from military bases and the world wars. Ill definitely return here with my kids. They also have a small, but cute gift shop that makes for awesome stocking stuffers. Next to the museum is Cedar Hill Cemetery that is quiet and historical. Enjoyed the exhibits, learning more about Suffolk, and discovering the area's connection to Planter's Peanuts. Be sure to ask for the Planter's story and spend some time looking at the railroad diorama of the city as it appeared in the early 20th century.
I only stayed for about half an hour, but I could have gotten more out of the visit by allowing more time to explore, read, and talk with the museum's guide.
This is very close to downtown and apparently part of a small network of museums in and around Suffolk. The city's connection to Amtrak makes it a neat destination that I'd like to visit again. I hope to be able to stop...
