Senator Gwen Margolis (October 4, 1934 - June 9, 2020) is a member of the Florida Women's Hall of Fame for being a trailblazer who paved the way for other women in politics. As a democrat she was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1974 and she served until 1980. She served three different times in the Florida Senate from 1980 to 1992, 2002 to 2008, and 2010 to 2016. She was the first woman to chair the finance and tax committees. In 1990, Senator Margolis made history when she was named President of the Florida Senate making her the first woman to preside over any state senate in the United States. Gwen Margolis is remembered for playing a pivotal role in the incorporation of Sunny Isles Beach.
After a 42 year career during which she won numerous awards, Gwen Margolis retired from politics in 2016. On December 12, 2001, this 2.84 acre park opened dedicated to the senator for all of her years of service. Money for this park was provided by funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.
Gwen Margolis Park is well maintained and beautifully laid out making it a delight to visit. Amenities at Gwen Margolis Park a shade covered playground, benches, picnic tables, paved walking path, and botanical garden. There is also an off leash dog park called the Bone Zone.
One of the most popular features of the park is the Senator Gwen Margolis Park soccer field which is one of the most used facilities in Sunny Isles Beach. It is part of the Youth Soccer programs which enrolls several hundred children each year, and it is also used by park patrons on the weekends. State of the art Musco Sports lighting was recently added to the soccer fields to improve night games.
Many people live in towers in Sunny Isles Beaches so green spaces like Senator Gwen Margolis Park are essential for giving people and pups a place to exercise and play.
