If I was to describe this place in one word. It would be “adequate”. My two night stay was a Father’s Day present so I had nothing to do with the booking process and had no direct experience with staff. The main plus for this hotel is its location. All of the main parts of the village are in easy walking distance. Walk out the door and there are a number of restaurants to chose from within a five minute walk radius. The hotel itself was kind of so-so, not particularly good but not particularly bad. The whole Whistler experience wad great but the hotel was an insignificant part of our enjoyment. It was just a place to sleep overnight. To be fair this review is based on comparisons with other hotels in the area and not on hotels in general. Compared to average hotels in average locations this one is a step up, but not by much. The room itself is a good size, containing one queen sized bed, a drop-down bed if needed and best of all a nice kitchen area. Everything appeared to have been cleaned adequately. (For for those who use hotels regularly I recommend getting a UV flashlight that can reveal any human remains from previous occupants that are invisible to the naked eye. Unfortunately I forgot mine for this trip). The bathroom is on the small size but serviceable. A bathtub is included but it is so tiny forget about having a nice relaxing bath after a long day of activity. This is strictly a shower only operation. The paintwork is peeling off the wooden door frame. While not interfering with bathroom function, it does indicate a hotel with a poor maintenance habit with little emphasis on quality and owners/staff having little pride in the operation. Clearly relying on the Whistler popularity to bring in the customers rather than being a top notch hotel. Bed mattress a bit saggy and too soft for my liking, but acceptable. Oddly only one bedside table and on the other side where a table would normally be was a large lamp leaving the person on that side of the bed with nowhere to put odds and ends when it is time to to sleep. Next to that side of the bed was a very big portable air conditioner capable of producing an overwhelming noise and nothing else. No cooling effect whatsoever. Fortunately the temperature outside was well below normal so all it took was opening a couple of small windows and unplugging the noise making machine to make the room environment comfortable. Other reviewers have commented about the noise from people outside but on this visit, other than for one 30 minute period, the room was silent throughout. Mind you this was at the peak of low season and the cold and rain kept the village pretty well deserted during the stay. The gym was very small and the jets in the hot tub were not working. Also the hot tub was right next to a quite heavily used corridor for guests and anyone in it were exposed to the many looking over as they passed by. All it would take would be to put up a privacy barrier between the corridor and tub so its occupants could relax a little more without the discomfort of being constantly looked at. Finally, as mentioned, there was a well equipped kitchen in the hotel room that can save you hundreds of dollars when not eating out all the time. Whistler is a great place to stay regardless of the weather (it was even snowing at the top of the mountains even though it was at the end of June). Many happy memories were made but unfortunately the hotel was not included in those and its memory will soon fade away. Looking for a special occasion or celebration this is not the hotel to stay at, but if you just need a reasonably bland and comfortable place to sleep in overnight this place...
Read moreDo you like mice, old run down hotels and lackluster service? Then this is the right hotel for you!
Ok, so we had a mouse in our room, little guy would run all over our clothing, food and furniture. Maintenance provided two traps but this mouse was smart enough to not get caught and he was too quick to catch. The front desk couldn't provide us an alternative room and suggested we move to another property.
Next issue was the fireplace, it didn't work! Maintenance came and replaced the thermostat but we could only get it to turn on at 30C, so you either baked or froze, so we just used it manually. The mouse definitely enjoyed the extra warmth.
Generally, the hotel is run down, like really run down. Toilet and shower keep running for example, water stains from it, cracked and damaged trim and fixtures in the room. The microwave was new, so that was nice but just about everything in the room was tired or janky in some kind of way.
Noise is always an issue in Whistler, and with the old tired windows/doors you can definitely hear it all. Also, the midnight fire-alarms and evacuation add to the feeling of being woken up.
Oh, almost forgot, the hot tub wasn't working either. We found out this information after check in.. guess that's where the mouse bath.
Oh the elevator lobby is also the loading dock the Mongoli Grill. So in the morning you can bump shoulders with the kitchen and delivery staff as you head on out.
Staff was mixed, some had zero clue (ie no training) and couldn't answer the basics (like where is the luggage cart, do you have a laundry or what are the check-out requirements). One just stood there and watched while the other got slammed with calls and people at the front desk. There were some standouts, you could tell they cared but couldn't do much else with the tools at hand.
Would I let you pay me money to stay here? Likely not, unless we are talking a lot of money. Would I pay to stay here again, absolutely not.
However, if you only plan to be in Whistler 1-2 nights, plan to be drunk at Garfs most nights and just need a place to vomit and pass out, then this place is spot on. It's also close to the lifts, so that's a bonus. Oh and you have Mongoli Grill right there, how could I forget.
How can you fix this? Spend some $ updating and improving the rooms and keeping the facilities working, training the staff better and motivating them more (pay).
During the stay we worked via the Vacasa text support team and the front desk staff. There was no follow-up from either during out stay and we did not receive any refunds or other...
Read moreThis property has the worst acoustics I've ever dealt with during a hotel stay. If someone is in the hall talking at normal volume, they might as well be in your room. This is fine during the day, but at 1:30am when you're trying to sleep - it's a problem.
My boyfriend and I stayed from Friday to Sunday in room 315. Our sleep overnight from Friday to Saturday was choppy due to the fact that our room faces the courtyard. With people walking through at all hours talking, their voices bounce/echo off the walls and into your room (whether your windows are open or not)
If you end up in a room that does not face the courtyard, this is obviously not an issue - but a NUMBER of rooms do.
Our sleep from Saturday to Sunday was non-existent. We were first woken up at 1:30am to a couple standing outside in the hall talking on their cellphone. I think they were meeting someone who actually stays at the hotel, but that person hadn't returned yet. I politely poked my head out and the woman apologized, but the man approached me and asked if I 'wanted a hug' which made me feel unsafe and scared to confront someone again personally.
Continually, people would come through our hallway - talking, waking us up. At 4:00am my boyfriend had had enough and opened our door and shouted at the two guys to 'Keep it down' - at that point I called front desk and spoke to Raj who was understanding and said he would notify the security guard. No guard came by as far as we were aware.
The noise continued until 5:30am where we heard a group leave from our hallway to outside in the courtyard.
In the morning, I spoke with Elliot who is a manager and I will say that his approach was so sincere and kind. However, the great staff like Elliot and Raj really have zero ways to combat this very real problem. The property managers need to address this issue. It should not be left up to your guests to try to police each other because something eventually will happen that will result in serious consequences for you as the business operators. I hope you take this seriously.
Also, this was the warmest room I have ever stayed in. We had to use the AC and keep the windows open (while it was snowing) to cool the temperature down enough to be comfortable.
Lastly, the bathrooms are old and are not cleaned as deeply as required. The bathtub in particular looks rough.
For a little bit more money we could have stayed somewhere else and avoided all of this - I recommend you do not make the same...
