It is very difficult to trust reviews for garden hostel because so many travellers get confused by "new garden hostel" or "garden guest house"! ||||The pics that seem to have been added on here are not from garden hostel, they are from garden guesthouse. The rooms in the actual garden hostel (3F mirador mansions) and its sister hostels are much worse!||||Garden hostel actually consists of 3 hostels....Kung Fu Hostel (also on 3rd floor) and Taiwan Hostel (on 4th floor). ||||The best of this bad bunch is probably Kung Fu Hostel where some of the rooms have balconies, and most have ensuite bathrooms (still nowhere near clean, and most rooms have problems with bed bugs). But unfortunately there is no internet coverage in these rooms, and they all seem to have a constant smell of mold! ||||The worst is by far Kung Fu Hostel, where the communal toilet and shower facilities look like they've not been cleaned with more than a quick spray of a power shower for many years. There is a constant smell of old old rusty water that is indescribable and makes you hold your breath and cover your nose and mouth everytime you go to the toilet!||||the only redeeming feature to these hostels is the outdoor communal garden area which was once a gathering place for like minded travellers and long term HK expats where they could share stories and good information on where to go and what to do... but alas, now those travellers and expats have all found cheaper and higher quality accomodation in other hostels and guesthouses in the same building, or in chungking mansions nextdoor!||||if you are looking at staying in this area at all, i would advise you not to book in advance... there are literally hundreds of hostels in the 2 large buildings (chungking mansions and mirador mansions) so there are always many rooms available. many people will try and take you to see their hostel and guesthouses, so the best thing to do is to just take a look before you agree to stay there... if you saw the rooms in garden hostel before you stayed there, i'm pretty sure you...
Read moreAvoid the Garden Hostel in Mirador mansion at all costs!! Management were so rude, they overcharged me (charged me for four nights, but the receipt they gave me said three, and when I asked them about it, they told me to "shut up" and "stop complaining!||||Also, rats on the garden terrace. And you can't access the garden for five nights a week, because they do kung fu there, and they have nasty signs warning people not to use the garden at these times, which is pretty bad, because on their website, they say that you can use the garden at any time! I heard the management has thrown people out for just going into their room while they were doing kung fu!||||AND A SERIOUS BEDBUG PROBLEM: After getting eaten alive all night, and seen lots of little nasty crawlies under the bed, I left. Apparently this place is well known for bedbugs, because when I went to another guesthouse in the same building and told them that I'd stayed in the garden hostel, they refused to let me stay, saying that I might bring bedbugs!||||And they were right, for about two weeks after I stayed there, I was finding bedbugs in my shirts, my socks, and my bag! I had to wash all my clothes and buy a new backpack, so in the end, it didn't work out cheaper because I had to get a new backpack! I could have used this money to stay somewhere decent!!! Sorry to rant, but I really think it would be unfair that people pay money to stay there, and aren't made aware of the bedbug problem!||||thier website said $50 a night for dorms, but they were charging me $70 a night. The garden is closed 5 nights a week because it is a kung fu school aswel, and there is no other...
Read moreWe booked in to the New Hong Kong Hostel for One week In August 2012. The owner owns several of the hostels in Block C at Chungking Mansions and as a result we actually ended up in the "Garden Hostel" on floor 16.||||The Hostel was absolutely perfect for our needs. We had an immaculate room, which was cleaned daily by the friendly and helpful staff. The room is small, but there is plenty of room under the beds to store cases etc. The bathroom again was small, but perfectly equipped with a lovely hot shower. The Air con worked perfectly and there was a good size TV and free Wi-Fi.||||Given the location and price, visitors should expect small, neat things. The cleanliness and friendliness of the staff however were WELL above our expectations. We've spent time in countless Hostels across New Zealand, none of which come close to this hostel for cleanliness, convenience and comfort. ||||The location is perfect, and we really can't understand why people give Chungking Mansions such a bad press. We had done our research and expected the hawkers (which were very polite and no trouble), small lifts etc etc so there were no big surprises. Chungking Mansions is not a threatening place although people may not have experienced this kind of environment before, so do check it out in advance. The curry restaurants are excellent and there are some of the cheapest snacks and drinks in all of Hong Kong on the ground floor!||||We would DEFINITELY stay here again. We're posting this review on both "New Hong Kong Hostel" and "Garden Hostel" as we're not 100% sure which would be...
