The Mar Inn balances comfort, calm, peace, and low environmental impact in a beautiful package. Staying here (as I am with my wife as we recuperate from strep throat) is the single most grounding experience we've had in our 3 weeks visiting Costa Rica.
The staff we've interacted with seem to be fiercely devoted to caring for the Monteverde Cloud Forest and their guests, in that order as it should be. They are welcoming and patient. They each have a different perspective, and are happy to share their own experiences in this special and critical piece of our world.
The rooms are elegant, wrapping you in a luscious space to restore tranquility. The amenities are well thought-out and suited to provide you the best base from which to explore the cloud forest.
The lobby in the lower building is fitted out with soft leather sofas, well-thumbed reading material, and (sometimes, if you're extraordinarily lucky) your gracious hosts, Paco and Figo.
Breakfast is a choice of simple fare, well prepared; eggs as you like them, rice and beans perfectly fluffed, sweet plantain delicately fried, pillowy pancakes. The coffee is hot and bold. The dining room is a beautiful mix of warm wood parquetry and large windows opening on the hills above...

Read moreWe were in room 3 which is in a quiet part of the hotel and has it's own little garden. There is a double bed and single bed and fridge and safe. The rooms and hotel are cleaned to a high standard. They have a bar which has lovely views. The town is 5 mins walk down a hill which has lots of shops and restaurants||The thing that let this place down was the lady receptionist. Breakfast starts at 6.30 am and we asked to eat then the following day as we were being collected at 7.50am for a tour. We were told they had a tour group who took priority and we could not have any breakfast, we offered to decide night before our option or could they do a breakfast box but again we were told no we would have to go without. We asked for a refund for breakfast and were told no .We argued and she eventually called the manager who agreed we could have breakfast. ||The next two days she said we could not book until the tour group decided they wanted breakfast and we could then book 30 mins before or 30 mins after again regardless of when we needed to be up for tours.
