Location: not bad. On the edge of the town but only a few minutes walk from the Roman ampitheatre and 10 mins walk from the city centre. Next door to the nearby convenience store we discovered a basic but cheap and cheerful bar full of friendly local characters, where my group gathered for a beer each evening before going into town.|Hotel: it’s rather basic, with dated décor of the fake flowers and random ornaments variety. Not suitable for a romantic weekend away, but is fine for a group of friends. |Breakfast: a basic but acceptable buffet: cold meats and cheeses, fruit, bread/pastries, olives, tomatoes, hardboiled eggs and cereals. |There were a few issues: in one of the rooms, the air con and fridge didn’t work, we couldn’t work out how to turn the TV on (but that wasn’t a big deal) one of the power points didn’t work and sparks and smoke came out of the hairdryer when it was turned on. The staff quickly sorted the air con and provided a new hairdryer when we mentioned it, but we thought that maybe the electrics generally could benefit from being checked over. |In this context, the lack of a fire escape from the top floor was a bit worrying, as was the fact that if someone else has locked the front door you need to use a key in order to get out of the building. At one point I found I was locked in, as I’d left the key upstairs with my room-mate so had to go back up two flights of stairs to get it. |The fact that only one key is provided per room (not per guest) is inconvenient if room-mates are coming and going at different times as we were asked to take the key when we went out, rather than leave it behind reception. |Staff: the receptionist was friendly and helpful, but the member of staff in charge of the breakfast room was rather scary and told us off for (variously) using too many plates, sitting at the wrong tables, helping ourselves to juice after the 10am deadline and attempting to take our cups of tea upstairs to the room (as there are no tea-making facilities in the rooms).|Observations on Pula generally: an attractive little city with interesting architecture and history and a good variety of bars and restaurants. Pleasingly, very few drunk Brits there; it seems to attract an older crowd. There is some graffiti but generally the city is pretty clean and we didn’t see any signs of crime. |Most of the Croatians we met (waiters, shopkeepers etc) speak very good English and...
Read moreWe stayed 1 night in Pula as s family of 4; we booked 2 rooms. The hotel has a great location; the parking arrangement worked well for us: the hotel was ideal for us for a 1 night stay. |The family/ staff running the hotel were very friendly and helpful. We requested 2 rooms next to each other and we got this. The rooms were simple but comfortable for staying one night, or perhaps two nights. The bed was comfortable; the bathroom clean and everything worked fine; the a/c was good; the shutters helped make the room dark and it was quiet, despite being on a road near the attractions of Pula.|The breakfast was basic and, as others have mentioned, the lady looking after the breakfast room seemed to have rules about where you sit, which cups you use. |If you have any mobility issues the hotel is probably not for you: the entrance is up a flight of old steps, the breakfast is down these steps at street level; there’s no lift, so most rooms are upstairs. |We liked the fact that the hotel is really convenient to visit the Roman amphitheatre (steps away) and the sea front (plenty of boat trips from here); and about 10 minutes walk to the main tourist area (pedestrianised old streets of Pula), with shops and restaurants and sights to visit. |We had heavy rain (in late July) and noticed there is not really anywhere to sit if the weather is bad; only on your bed in your room. We borrowed umbrellas and went out...
Read moreHotel Scaletta is in a great location, about 3 minutes walk from the amphitheatre and start of the historic city. Parking is a few minutes walk away so its best to drop your bags first. |Check in was fabulous, very helpful and friendly and even showed me a video of how to get to the parking after I parked in the wrong place. Our room was a good size with both AC and window shutters and lovely decor and personal touches. There was no kettle (a pain for me as I usually have my first tea at 6AM) although you could get tea and coffee from the restaurant downstairs. We also found the internet connection kept dropping so ended up tethering our mobiles to use instead. |Breakfast was outside and down the steps to a room under the hotel, a large and grand location. Breakfast was included in the price and a good start to the day but the choice was more limited than the other hotels on this trip. A good value for money...
