I arrived at Hostal Ovando July 25, 2015 at around 7:00 am, I had previously contacted the hotel to let them know of my early arrival I was made aware of a $20 early arrival fee, to my surprise upon arrival i was told I needed to pay $80 per person for arriving too early after a few word I agreed (I was on a overnight flight that was delayed 2 hours). I walked into my room and immediately went to sleep. I woke up around 3:00pm, as am fixing my luggage and become aware one of my carry on bag was missing. I immediately called downstairs and told them one of my bags were missing and am certain i had it upon arrival because I pulled my reservation papers from it. They told me the luggage boy at the time was not in that they would call him to find out, a few hours later i called downstairs again and they told me they couldn't reach him. I explained I had my phone in that bag, my camera, a envelope with money and clothes there was over $7,000 dollars in value for them to call the hotel manager and for them to resolve this issue. They told me they had contacted him that he will be there the next day. The next morning I went downstairs where this man claiming to be head of security told me that the luggage boy had left for vacation and they couldn't reach him but that he was warranty me that he would recover my belongings not no worry that he had called the techs to obtain video of the incident. Day after day they could not contact the tech two days before my departure i decided to involve the police. I went in an made a report of the robbery. The next morning police arrived and tried to obtain video and the hotel refuse to show it to them. I had to leave the next morning the police informed me that they would obtain a warrant to see the video but that could take up to 2 days since then i have been in contact with authorities in Santo Domingo. They did obtain the warrant but when they went to see the video the image was destroyed. Now I am in the process of having to sue the hotel and go to court to obtain back my belongings. I have try to communicate with the hotel through telephone and Instagram but no one is returning my calls. On top of that while I was there they changed my room 4 times due to no electricity in the outlets in some room, leaking ceilings in others and a horrible smell in another. Dont waste your time and money here, especially if they cant be responsible for the robbery that occurred with there staff under there hotel. Worst experience in the world....

We’ve wanted to stay here since getting married 7 years ago in Dominican Republic but weren’t able too until last night. I’ve very much looked forward to our stay but we’re so incredibly disappointed. We booked a special they had online for a total of $99 including taxes (confirmation stated $77.34 plus $21.66 for taxes for a total of $99) this rate included breakfast, hot towels and a drink upon arrival. Never received the hot towels. Upon checking in the receptionists advised the rate should be $99 plus tax for a total of $126, I showed her the confirmation and she stated it was wrong and I should verify. What do I need to verify when you are seeing the confirmation YOUR HOTEL sent me? In the end she told me she wouldn’t charge it due to the inconvenience, excuse me? You shouldn’t charge it as you are literally stealing and are seeing what my confirmation says. We were celebrating our 7th anniversary and didn’t even have a card in the room acknowledging this. The next day upon checkout when presented the bill we are told it’s $126 total, I again show her the confirmation and she tells me she’s only aware of rates being $99 plus tax and that my confirmation is wrong. I don’t care what you are aware of, if you are seeing my confirmation why are you arguing for $27? She acknowledged we were correct and started calling her manager to adjust it, manager was meant to arrive at 9am, it was 9:20 and he was nowhere to be found. We had to leave for our flight so left it as is but we literally feel like this hotel stole from us as their own confirmation (not a third parties) says what the rate should be and although they are seeing it they are making excuses and arguing with a guest over a mere $27 when they are only there for one night and celebrating an anniversary. How are you charging taxes twice? In addition, upon checkout we were asked if we consumed anything from the minibar and we advised we didn’t, her response was “allow me to check with the minibar team”. Why don’t you send them before asking me so you don’t imply I am lying to you? Didn’t expect this service at all and it is such a shame being the property is stunning. I will add the bellman, bed comfort and breakfast were absolutely wonderful. Reception left a lot to be desired and I will never ever stay with this...

If I can give this hotel a negative ten stars I would. I just do not know where to start with this place. We came here for our anniversary and we love DR and been here several times. On Friday valet instructed us to park either on the side of the road parallel to the hotel or in the parking lot. He said it did not matter the rental would be safe. As we are checking in, we spoke to a Marcos Hernandez and we told him where we parked and he said that’s fine. Next morning our vehicle was towed by the city. When we spoke to head of security in a receptionist Daniel Diaz and Denise Perez they told us they don’t understand why all the vehicles. They also told us that it was for us to figure out and it had nothing to do with the hotel. Plus there was no signs indicating or letting anyone know that they were no parking during this day during this time. So, the next morning when we found out that our car was towed, the hotel again was no help. It was a woman who we assume work for the hotel explain to us what happened and that the British embassy notified all the establishments that their guests would not be allowed to park on the side of the road due to an event due to security reasons. Which is all however being lied to and manipulated by the staff, including the general manager, Jose Hernandez. Who continue to lie to us about the situation shift. The blame onto us provide no support or guidance, and basically insulted us and threaten to kick us out of their hotel. If we didn’t leave them alone about our vehicle is beyond disgusting. My fiancé and I travel very often we travel 3 to 4 times a year and this has been our first experience like this one. I do not recommend this hotel at all. They lack communication, integrity, and customer service skills. The refuse to even provide us guidance on what to do. Thankfully where we rented car handle it but, for the hotel took no responsibility as they should have. I stand by review Jose Hernandez and his staff were absolutely horrible to us thanks for the reply and thank you for treating me and my husband do terrible on our anniversary. TRY YOU BEST NOT TO BOOK WITH THIS HOTEL!!! Not worth it at all -0/5 stars. Jose Hernandez comments and lie stating we received help and support very despicable and...

This historic hotel set in the old colonial zone is an oasis in the heat of this beautiful city. With its abundance of history you’ll never get bored exploring this fantastic hotel. ROOM I had the pleasure of staying in one of the superior club imperial suites that has a separate elevator entrance. The room was large & tastefully decorated incorporating the age & history of this building. The four post bed was a nice touch & in room espresso machine was very welcomed. I loved that they had noise cancelling headphones for the tv so not to bother others & the super cool bathroom with circular stone shower was a joy to bathe in with the luxury toiletries. AREAS My club imperial room included private access to the lounge that is only for club guests with drinks available all day & an aperitive in the evening with two free drinks & snacks it’s a great was to start the evening. The pool courtyard is where you’ll spend most of your time cooling off from the incredibly strong rays of the sun, the massive ancient tree next to the pool provides ample shade. There are so many courtyards & beautiful seating areas, my favorite place was the orchard courtyard that has a vast array of local flora from mango trees to herbs its such an inviting place to sit back with a cocktails & enjoy the evening. FOOD Breakfast is served at the sublime courtyard restaurant. They offer a huge variety of hot & cold high quality foods especially fruit. The Bellini station for a morning tipple was a nice touch. I also had a fantastic seafood lunch of cerviche for starter & roasted dorada, both were delicious & the famous hotel mojito’s are a great way to wash down all that delectable food. SERVICE This is a luxury hotel & the service really shows here. The staff are super kind & courteous always willing to help with all my needs. English is also spoken widely. LOCATION There could not be a better location. Right on the old town fortress wall it’s the perfect location to explore the old zone. On the same street you’ll find the Ozama fort & the kahkow chocolate factory, both must visits.

This area is immensely historic as our European forefathers landed here in 1492 and colonization begun! A day before Columbus spotted land his crew was planning a mutiny for they lost faith in the captain’s navigation skills and luckily for Chris, the next morning the Dominican was on the horizon. The hotel is perfectly positioned to experience the region. Perched on the Ozama River, Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando is a landmark minutes from Plaza de la Hispanidad, the Catheral, fortress and the must see Kahkow chocolate tour. The hotel is very well appointed and holds a true elegance along with historical significance. The pool area is beautiful, check in was easy accompanied by a glass of bubbles. The only downside to this establishment was the room. Our room was 4026 and while being on the river side was close to the courtyard, a private function and plenty of noise. The room felt out of date as well as rough around the edges as some of the furniture was deteriorating. The bed was situated directly below a smoke detector that emitted quite bright lights and enough flashing LED’s to disturb a good night sleep. So based on the room along with the sound and light sound show I rate our stay a 3 out of 5. There is an Airbnb in the building that may be your best bet as it appears remodeled as well you can deal directly with a person instead of a corporation.
