La Plaza de España o Plaza de la hispanidad, está ubicada en las Atarazanas. Su construcción data del siglo XVI y en ella se realizaban corridas de toros y otras actividades. Fue remodelada en el 1990 durante el gobierno de Joaquín Balaguer. Ubicada en el centro de la Ciudad Colonial está la Plaza de España de Santo Domingo. Este importante espacio histórico fue escenario de la vida social de las primeras familias españolas, pues las primeras casas fueron ubicadas cerca del lugar que en aquel momento estaban a la orilla del río Ozama, en lo que se conoce como Las Reales Atarazanas fueron los almacenes de la Corona Española en la isla. Allí se recibían las mercancías traídas desde Europa y eran almacenadas hasta su distribución en la colonia. Era el centro de las actividades mercantiles de la isla. Durante el siglo XIX, múltiples casas fueron construidas en lo que es la Plaza España, alrededor de las entonces ruinas del Alcázar. En esta plaza está ubicado el Alcázar de Diego Colón, hijo del colonizador Cristóbal Colón, este lugar es actualmente atractivo turístico, donde se pueden apreciar algunas de las pertenencias de la familia. La plaza de España era la entrada a la ciudad, desde la emblemática Puerta de San Diego, ya que en la parte posterior de esta zona, se encuentra el puerto de Santo Domingo. La remodelación que muestra hoy día el Alcázar, fue realizada entre 1955 y 1957 por encargo del gobierno dominicano y fue llevada a cabo por el arquitecto español Javier Barroso. Para entonces, la Plaza tenía una fuente en el centro. Luego en el 1990, se procedió a realizar la remodelación actual, donde fue eliminada dicha fuente y se convirtió en la Plaza que disfrutamos hoy día. En la plaza se encuentra ubicada una estatua en honor a Nicolás de Ovando quien fuera gobernador de la isla desde 1502 hasta 1509 y se encargara del traslado y reconstrucción de la ciudad Frente a la plaza, existe una zona llena de restaurantes y bares , que hacen del entorno, un verdadero atractivo turístico. En la Plaza, son realizadas frecuentemente actividades auspiciadas por los ministerios de cultura y turismo, con conciertos populares y obras de teatro.

Plaza de Espana was once a vast open field prior to the arrival of Spanish colonizers. It later became the starting point for soldiers as they paraded in regal fashion around the nearby palace of Diego Colon. now these days, this open square in the heart of Santo Domingo is a popular gathering spot for locals and travelers. Numerous restaurants and cafes offer an opportunity to relax with a cup of coffee, a traditional Dominican meal or a glass of wine, while the open space provides room for concerts and other performances. The square is most often visited as part of a city tour—whether its on foot, Segway or bike. The nearby Bateria del Almirante is a perfect spot to check out stunning views of the Ozama River during daylight hours and visitors can also walk to the oldest commercial road in the city from Plaza de Espana.

The place is so appealing to the history of the city, located in colonial zone at the bank of the river where cruise ships stop. It has statue of the founder of the city and a large open field for events and parties, surrounded by Alcazar, Royal houses and restaurants. You can drive to this place from Punta Cana which is 2 and half hour nice drive or get bus tour to visit this place. Place is little dirty on the side, with lots of garbage disposals including plastic water bottles. City must pass the law to restore this heritage.

Amazing place with historical views right in the heart of the Historical Colonial Zone, basically in the patio of Christopher Columbus House. The atmosphere was so nice and they have a whole street full of restaurants, think restaurant week all year long, people walking their dogs,kids playing and still So So Romantic and chill with Amazing weather, you guys should visit the place night time and day time. I love it! . The building is a museum and preserves all furniture and rooms from the first trip to America .

This is a "must visit" spot for any tourist visiting Santo Domingo. It is filled with historical structures, and you can see how one of the oldest Spanish colonies in the western hemisphere was laid out, and how it felt. In the immediate area, you will find many little restaurants, little shops you can find decent gifts at, and many other historical sites. It gets really crowded on weekends, as the locals like to go to have a good time in that area.
