Pension Freiraum Guesthouse Berlin — Hotel in Berlin

My wife and I stayed in this wonderful pension in the Prenzlauer Berg section of Berlin. It was very convenient to the S-Bahn (S 9) which brought us all the way from the airport (11 miles) to within 2 blocks of the pension. This was the best room we have ever had in a B&B or pension in Europe. The room was spacious and clean. The design of the room was right out of an architectural magazine. The furnishings and decor were new and modern. The bathroom shower pressure was very good and they left us plenty of towels. The bed was super comfortable and there was no noise at night.||||I must mention the most 'Wunderbar' breakfast ( Fruhstuck) we have ever had in a B&B or pension in Europe. The choices were truly 'gourmet' like salmon and a romaine leaf, couscous, salads, tomatoes topped with mozzarella cheese, & brown bread. Of course, there was also scrambled eggs and meat choices.||||The pension is surrounded by unbelievable restaurants and it is very easy getting to all the tourist attractions by foot or on the U-Bahn. There was a grocery store right across the street which carried the most delicious German beers, including my favorite pilsner beer Holsten, at very reasonable prices.||||We are very happy we stayed here !!||||M. We stayed in a nicely appointed apartment located just down the street from and operated by Freiraum. This location is within a few blocks of a couple of different U-Bahn lines and stops, and within easy walking distance of a wide variety of small shops, convenience stores, very good restaurants and bars. The immediate neighborhood, which is primarily residential, was safe and quiet, and pleasant to walk either day or night. Breakfast every day consisted of a wide range of hot and cold offerings of both high quality and variety. We had a couple of small problems during our stay (parking and a non-functioning washing machine) but the staff/owners responded to our concerns promptly and fairly by helping us find alternate parking and even doing our laundry for us. You really can't ask for better customer care than that! I booked this Pension based on the positive reviews so I couldn’t have been more shocked to see what we got.

Minus: Bathroom smelled horribly and was in need of renovation. Door must be closed at all times to avoid getting the smell out. Ground floor, small apartment completely run down. Every wall and furniture was scratched and/or stained. One of the two beds was located in the kitchen right next to the bathroom (no warning about this when booking) Tap water (known in Berlin for its quality) was undrinkable due to bad taste Receptionist acted like receiving guests was a hassle. Explained everything extremely fast and showed us to the place in a hurry.
