A home far away from home ♥️ We had the absolute best experience at La Fuente. A huge shout out to the staff and volunteers: Pablo, Tina, Sophie and Bonnie were all so kind and welcoming. They were all putting so much effort in to create a relax and friendly environment and were very helpful. We unexpectedly arrived in the middle of the night and they let us relax in the main area, shower and check in early so we could take a nap, which we really appreciate. We were also able to store our luggage of the day or check out. The free breakfast is insanely good, like restaurant quality and a great opportunity to meet others in the hostel. They also organise free family dinners every evening, which again is a great way of meeting others, same for the other social activities they organise. You can also book transfers and other tours/hikes with them, which are all reasonable priced. The location is also perfect, right in the centre but in a more quiet street. I would be happy to come back to this hostel (we actually came back for one night and were sad we had already pre booked another hostel in Antigua before we stayed at La Fuente for the first time). We would recommend the hostel and have done to many other backpackers during our travels. If you’re looking for an affordable and relax stay (this is not a party hostel), then this is the place to be. Social, but not overly forced. *we stayed in a private room. One time in the deluxe and the other time in the budget room, both fine, main difference is the size.

I am so grateful that we found this hostel and chose to stay here. With the abundance of choice in Antigua, it’s hard to know where to go. Go here! It has a proper old school hostel feel, with the most lovely staff, comfortable beds, clean bathrooms. The common area is arranged in a way to bring people together, although it’s not a party spot (very peaceful) it’s easy to connect wait other travellers if that’s what you want. On every corner there is water refill stations, there’s books to read, optional social events on every night too. The kitchen is well stocked and very clean. The highlight, of course, is the included breakfast and dinner. I have stayed in nearly thirty hostels and this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had - five different options!? And restaurant quality. The heuvos rancheros are FANTASTIC. They make vegetarian dinner every night too, also delicious. when we were there, we had pasta and veggie burritos, Asian noodles, and a bean and rice dish. We even arrived very late the first night and got very detailed helpful check in instructions, and dinner left for us in the fridge. The kindness here is wonderful. There is a terrace which would benefit from some comfortable places to sit, but I believe this is in the works. My only suggestion is that the dorms get very hot, and the personal fans are affixed in a way where they can’t move, not the most optimal for airflow. I’ve added photos of the amazing food we were served for people like me who are nosy and want to see ;)

Price and facilities just don’t match! The staff is helpful and friendly and the common area good to make friends but that’s about all for the good part. We couldn’t use the beds until 8pm due to no mattresses (?!) and even after bargaining for a granted discount the hostel kept disappointing me. Room 2 is directly next to the common area, no window just fans that are super loud but necessary to turn on all night. Small light didn’t work. Towel had to be exchanged because someone used it… Shower was one of the dirtiest I’ve seen in 7 months backpacking, cockroaches there and also in the kitchen. Drain cover would be a simple solution. Found a bug in my bed right after that. The rooftop sounded great but is basically just a roof with ashtrays but no seating. The signs in the hostel saying “we just opened a year ago” do not justify any of this, a year is a lot of time to buy sitting options, figure out proper ventilation of air or some AC (or at least less noisy fans) and optimize hygiene. The free food is alright but I’d rather pay less to stay at a better hostel without food and eat in one of the many amazing cafés and cheap restaurants in the area.

Great location and thats about it. The reason this hostal has such good reviews is because if you give them a review you get a free beer. Place is hot, loud and terribly dirty. Girl behind the desk does not speak Spanish, we were told this was a new hostal and hence some of the facilities (like the rooftop) were still getting ready but in reality this place is terribly run down, the bathrooms had the worst smell and there is mold in some of the showers, rooftop had a dirty broken hammock and a beanbag that looked like it had been taken out of a fraternity party in 2001, the “private deluxe” room smelled of all the food cooked in the hostal, sweat and dampness, with dirty sheets, pillows whose covers were BROWN and a really bad lamp. The window faces the corridor and is covered by the thinnest curtain so the privacy element of it is a bit sarcastic. We left our bags whilst our room was getting ready, came back, tried to take it as we had paid for it and couldn’t really hack it, even by using a really low bar this place felt icky on so many levels. Having been on so many “budget” hostals, this is terrible, budget is not synonymous with unclean on so many levels. Unfortunately this place caters to a very specific type of traveler and we just weren’t it, if all you want is a place to sleep that still maintains the decency of basic human comforts,...
