I recently stayed at this property with my spouse and two kids. Overall, it was a very good vacation, filled with lots of beach and pool time. ||Our check-in process was fairly smooth and quick. We were received with a welcome drink and promptly taken to our canopy view bungalow. The room was spacious and clean. Waiting for us was a charcuterie board, bottle of sparking wine, and a personally written note from the staff. I thought that was a nice, unexpected gesture. My kids were very excited with our room being divided into two floors. The bedroom had a king size bed and a very comfortable queen sized pull-out/sofa bed. There was also a balcony with a view of the other rooms nearby. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as well as q-tips and face pads. You can also order toiletries via room service if needed. ||After we checked in, we came back to the front desk to see if there was a room upgrade available since we are Platinum Elite members through IHG; we were offered a double queen room in the main building. We were underwhelmed by the room after seeing it, so we passed on the offer. ||We did have a couple issues with the AC making loud knocking noises in our original room the first couple nights. We also noticed there isn't good ventilation in the rooms, which makes it feel muggy and stuffy. When we reported this to the front desk staff, a pregnant employee by the name of Angie (I believe), seemed a bit dismissive and told her coworker in Spanish that we would need to pay out of pocket if we wanted a different room. She indicated that the original upgrade room we were offered had been blocked for us, but that offer was no longer available as they had given the room to someone else. ||I found it to be pretty rude for her to say to her coworker we'd have to pay for another room in front of us, since I speak Spanish and could understand what she was saying. I think it could have been handled better if Angie explained all our available room choices, including paid upgrades. She told us there were no other rooms available. We asked for the manager's name to follow up with him. We returned to our room while they came to fix the air conditioner. The maintenance guy spent about 20 minutes in the room looking at the AC, and then abruptly left without saying a word. A while later, before we even tried to reach the manager, Wetzel, called us to inform us there was a 2 bedroom villa in building two available for the remainder of our stay. We of course accepted the room since it had an ocean view. This was a great example of good customer service, the manager taking the initiative to help us before we reached out to him directly.||There are four restaurants on the property, Alera, SeaSalt, The Drop Off, and Voz Cafe. We ate at all of them but Seasalt. The food on property is well-prepared and fairly priced for a resort. My only complaint is regarding the 32 ounce cowboy steak we ordered for dinner at Alera one night. It took a long time to prepare and seemed to be unevenly cooked, also lacking flavor. Other than that, our dining experiences were all positive at the restaurants. ||I was very impressed with the well-kept grounds and crystal clear beach at Kimpton Grand Roatan. The property is very modern and seems newly renovated. There are many lush, tropical plants, palm trees and flowers throughout the resort. There are a few pools on the property, including a hot tub in the main pool area, which gives you direct access to the beach. ||I had a massage at the Kao Kamasa Spa, and it was very good. When you book a spa service, you are given access to the facilities which include salt bath, hot tub, cold plunge, and steam room. ||The sunsets in Roatan, specifically at this location, were absolutely gorgeous. I would come here again, just for the beach and sunsets. There are several outside vendors trying to sell you massages and food/drinks on the beach, but they definitely weren't as pushy as other places. ||Overall, I think this is a 4-4.5 star property. There is potential for a higher rating. Most of the staff goes above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable as possible.||Despite a few hiccups, this ended up being a great vacation for my family and I. We would definitely return in the future. Kimpton Grand Roatan is a beautiful property in an excellent location. Shoutout to Wetzel for coming through for us and making our stay so...
Read moreWe stayed in Kimpton for 5 nights in the Roatan ocean view suite - incl taxes this was just over $1,000 per night. The view was impeccable and the suite was beautiful. However, the cost did not feel like value for money.
Suite Large with huge balcony giving you all the sunset views. This was the real selling point. You’ll see the beautiful sunset every night in your own space. The room is beautiful too, with a massive bathroom. However, whilst the shower space is vast, the shower itself is tiny, making the large space pointless. The suite is not well equipped - there is no coffee or tea facilities, no flip flops or beach tote. At this price point, I expect these kinds of things in room. Additionally, we had a bottle of wine in room waiting for us, however we had to request a corker be sent to the room. Again, this felt at ends with the price.
Unfortunately, the room servicing was not ideal. Our room was missed on two occasions. The first time, we let it slide but the second time we had to call in afternoon after being all out morning to have it cleaned. Also, our floor was not cleaned properly each day and it felt dirty - sandy as you’d expect in a beach hotel. But that’s why it should be cleaned thoroughly each day. We left a note on the bed kindly asking servicing to clean the floor for us and it was finally done.
We had to call 3 times to get a laundry bag and even when we specifically asked for it to be left in the room service cubby, the door was still rang and disrupted our evening again.
Again, at this price point, I expect better.
Service Overall the bar and restaurant services are great. The staff are really friendly and accommodating. Be sure to get the seabass ceviche and the beef tacos at the Sea cat!
I had liaised with Lea ahead of time in organising the birthday surprise in suite ahead of time and this was done. She was really helpful.
Where it slips is the back of house communications. We had several issues with private transfers & late check out agreements where it was clear one part of the business was not communicating with another. I have already raised this to the booking agent but it was a real downer so I am mentioning it here. Given the price, I expect to not have to prove I’ve spoken to other parts of the team, especially when the overall email has been in CC for transparency. The team has said they’ll work on this and I hope they do.
Location The location is great. You’re right on the beach and it has great snorkelling. It’s also a nice way up west bay too so definitely do that.
Spa I attended the spa twice and it is lovely. You unfortunately cannot go to the spa without a treatment and the day pass is pretty expensive. We did pay it nonetheless but it felt like for the cost of$300+ for 2 to visit, there should have been something else included. The staff were really nice there too and were accommodating when we had to change a couples experience to a single due to my husband being ill. The views are gorgeous too there. Be sure to go to the relaxation areas!
Pool area We didn’t use this but we did want to use the jacuzzi. Unfortunately, it was repeatedly full of children snorkelling. In other hotels, there is an appropriate age limit on those who can be in jacuzzis. I’d suggest similar here as it was a poor experience and not the purpose of a jacuzzi.
Green flash I would rate this separately personally as it was 5/5 across the board. We did this for my husbands birthday and wow it was spectacular. Arnold & Lesel were phenomenal and the food was beautiful. The setting is very romantic and special. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, book this. It’s absolutely worth the money.
All in all, the hotel is beautiful and the location is perfect. But there are items that feel just not quite good enough for the price point. It feels like this could be made better by some small changes. Until then, it’s unlikely I’d return to stay - I would however return in a heartbeat to the Green...
Read moreCame here to treat myself to for a solo Thanksgiving getaway, I was very excited, but Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed in my stay and the way I was treated.
First, when I arrived, the hostess who checked me in did not acknowledged my IHG status because I had booked through a third-party website. I have never had this problem in the past, but apparently this was not a status recognized by this Kimpton property. Next, I was taken to a room that was much farther in the back and far away from the main resort. When I entered the elevator of the building, I noticed a peculiar water damage or moldy smell. This same smell was in my room. When the bell man asked me if there was anything else needed, I mentioned that the smell was bothering me and asked if I could be moved to another room or have someone freshen up the room. He said he would see what he could do. After about an hour and a half of no response, I went back to the front desk, and I mentioned to the same hostess that the smell was bothering me. She said she would take care of it and check back with me after I had Thanksgiving dinner in the restaurant. The dinner was nice, but I feel like I was being rushed by multiple wait staff as evidence by not even finishing my drink and someone offering to take it for me.
When I returned, she moved me to another room on the same floor, but the same smell issue was there. At that point, I was too tired to bring it up and I decided to take a shower and go to bed. When I went to the bathroom, the shower was visibly soiled as evidenced by hair and from another person. I tried to call the front desk, but there was no phone in this room. I am not sure if this was by mistake, or if they did not want to speak with me, but I found it odd that there was no phone to contact anyone in this room. By this time, it was already past 1 1 pm and I did not feel safe walking up to the front desk, so I went to sleep. Despite sleeping in the room, completely covered, I woke up to multiple mosquito bites on my legs, hands, and side of my cheek.
The next morning, I went to the front desk to mention my issues and a different receptionist apologized and said she would move me to a room in the main building. I had already booked a tour for the day, but when I returned that afternoon, I was quite surprised to find that the room in the main building was far cleaner and did not have any moldy smell that I mentioned the night before, nor where there any mosquitos in this room.
Although I am grateful that I ended up in a better room eventually, I am disappointed that I had to ask multiple times to receive adequate treatment. I believe that I was treated with discontent and as a second-class citizen at this property. Had this issue had been resolved earlier, I would not have had such a bad experience and would not have multiple mosquito bite marks on my body. As an avid traveler, I would hope that this issue is not a reflection of many Kimptons, abroad, but I am very wary about this hotel chain treats people like me, a black woman, abroad. UPDATE:
The hotel manager reached out to me personally and apologized and addressed the situations that I encounter. I really appreciate this because most hotels do not take time to address every concern of a guest, but this one did. I would recommend this hotel again and encourage anyone thinking of going to Roatan...
