I popped in on a last minute booking in May 2021 on a campervan journey around Iceland, after deciding I needed a night with a proper bed and shower. I found this hotel online at a very affordable price (at the time approximately US$100).
Before I had arrived, I had received a message from the hotel stating that due to the pandemic, they were doing "remote" check-ins and informed me that I would be able to access my room using a pin code on the door. Easy enough! Certainly made life easy as I was able to go straight to my room.
Location wise, it is on the south edge of the center of Akureyri, with parking in front of the building and a short walk to the restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Given the fact that it was a bit wet during my time there, this was nice.
As for the hotel, I did not see a lift, and was given a room on the second floor. Stairs are easy enough for me, so if this is important, you may want to verify with the hotel.
The hotel as a whole and my room itself had a very modern feel and definitely had the "boutique hotel" vibes. Lots of art on the walls in public spaces, the room number boards were all unique and there was a guitar in my room available for playing. The bathroom was very well done with a shower that did it's job fabulously of washing several days of vanlife off of me! The bed as well was very comfortable and resulted in a fantastic night of sleep.
When it was time to leave, I wasn't sure what the check out procedures were, so I just messaged the hotel and said I had vacated the room when the time had come. I assume that was the right thing to do, since I never heard anything one way or the other.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel for Akureyri, and had I been at a more high volume time for visitors, I wouldn't have had any problem paying more...
Read moreWish I’d read the TripAdvisor reviews properly before booking this hotel . When we actually saw the size of the sea view room we were in shock also the ugly tiny bathroom . |We asked to be moved to a larger room as this one was a joke . They showed us a larger room wanted a lot more money for it and it was actually even nearer to the building work going on and the view of that . So we declined . |The bathroom wasn’t fit for purpose as the shower just got the whole area soaking wet . It was just a nightmare to use . |All the wires were hanging down and across from the tv on to the brick wall they use as decoration it felt like staying in a cell . |Being woken before 7am by all the workmen staying at the hotel and the work outside going on including a big crane going off constantly wasn’t a great experience. We never got a good nights sleep . Even Sunday they were working . |Breakfast was a free for all , getting told by staff to get out of the breakfast room would be better as 50 workmen would be coming in soon . Having to eat breakfast in the bar area on tables not designed for dining wasn’t pleasant. |We weren’t informed about all the noise outside etc before the booking which I find annoying.|It was cold that time of the year and thru out our stay using the hotel bar for breakfast and drinks , people coming in and out and leaving the doors of the hotel open constantly creating a cold draft . |In all I’d never stay again or recommend this hotel to anyone we had the...
Read moreIt is such a shame that we spent so much time adventuring the day before we checked into Hotel Akureyri, because I feel like it deserved way more attention from us than it got!
I immediately got Wes Anderson vibes from the main hotel, which is situated among some tall trees and a spectacular mountain view and faces out onto the water in the harbor. I can just tell so much work was put into the theming of the building we stayed in, and loved the attention to detail paid to the gallery walls as well as the unique movie quotes that hung next to every room (we got a Star Wars one!).
I especially loved how classy and modern the all-black interior made it look, and it was a new experience for me to enter my room using just a number pad. This room was by far the comfiest and most beautiful room, and our first with a TV! The blackout curtains were perfect after our late arrival and the bathroom was insanely sleek and futuristic looking with the rainfall showerhead and the backlit mirror. Also, the soap was the absolute best soap I've ever smelled in my whole life!!
The bed was also the most comfortable bed we have maybe ever slept in, and we don’t take that lightly! Overall, for what we paid we got way more than we expected. Akureyri is such a beautiful city and I am thankful to Hotel Akureyri for the positive experience! I would love to come back someday for more...
