I went here along with my family and we were only staying there for two nights. My first impression of the place was unsettling because it was in a closed-off area and the architecture of the building was strange too with random bridges. As we were checking in, a staff member was dancing to "Believe" by Cher behind the counter as their colleague was helping us out... not so serious right there. Eventually we were guided to our room and I observed the interior of the hostel. The walls had art of Mr. Bean, Yoda etc. and was decorated with enormous mirrors, and had areas that were actively being renovated. We reached our room in the end after searching for a while. I was expecting a decent room for a family of four, instead we got a cramped room. What did our room consist of? Here's a list:
• The walls were painted in yellow.
• The flooring had a lot of marks from a squeaky metal bunk bed my brother and I shared.
• Two separate beds for my parents.
• Duvet covers and pillowcases made from some scratchy fabric.
• Pillows had barely any stuffing in them, had to pile up my purse and a bath towel beneath it to get some support for my head at night.
• Many power outlets by the enormous windows (causing so much sunlight to get in and turning our room into a sauna during summer) but only one outlet by the bunk bed.
• A small wooden table which could only support dinner for one person.
• One tiny bin provided by the door.
• No wifi reached into our room.
Moving onto the bathroom and shower:
• You entered some sort of corridor where there were two doors on either side (left door: shower | right door: toilet).
• The shower was in poor condition where the shower head was upsettingly weak, was barely able to get any water into my scalp. The shower head was coated in a lot of limestone too.
• The shower room itself was as large as a wardrobe and had old shower tiles in some dusty orange tint. Tons of drill holes with the silicon plugs still inside and dirt between tiles, unhygenic.
• It was nearly impossible for me to close the door to the shower room. The door was made out of wood and had a thick coating of white paint.
• The water in the shower and bathroom had a strong odour of sulfur, making it smell of raw eggs.
• The WC was as large as the shower room but had at least windows that were possible to open for ventilation (note: they were ~ 3030 cm (1212 in.) in size).
• The door to the WC had a door handle on the outside but not on the inside. Instead it was a rectangular knob you had to twist to the right to open and twist to the left to show it was occupied (but did not act as an actual lock to the door, speaking of privacy).
Basically, the room was just really unsettling and my family and I are dissatisfied with our experience.
The offered breakfast is a different story. What we were greeted by was a camping table with nothing but a toaster, white bread, a few spreads (jam, marmalade, PB, nutella and regular butter), cheese and bologna ham. Behind us there was coffee, tea water, cold water and milk and we thought that was it along with some cereal. We heard there would be juice and we asked where it was, and the single staff member in the reception pointed at this one fridge the hostel had stocked with water and soda for sale, and the juice was at the very bottom of the fridge. Not a nutritional breakfast at all, poorly served, not pleasant. There were no fruit nor vegetables served either... like how? Why? I honestly have no clue.
To sum it all up:
The room was awful, nothing good about it, disastrous. The breakfast was a total scam. The wifi was great in the lobby but not in the room. Sketchy interior.
If I return to Iceland I won't be going back to this hostel unless some major changes happen.
I am giving this hostel 1 star. This place requires some serious management if it should be worthy of a...
Read moreI booked this hostel because it is cheap and the amenities are exactly what you expect! It was unfortunate my room was right opposite the main entrance along with the toilet and shower, in which there was only one shower. The best thing about this hostel is the location, you are right next to the famous church in Reykyavik! When I checked in there was a place to leave my bag before I could get into my room as I arrived early this was very handy. On my last night, I went to the front desk to ask for help booking my return bus to the airport as I was told by Flybus that my hotel/hostel would help organise this by phoning them. I went up to the three men behind the desk on the night of the 15th of September, and asked if they could help me organise my Flybus return at bus stop 8 for the next again morning. They looked very confused as I explained that the woman had said they would have been able to help me, then another man dismissed me and said they had no affiliation with Flybus and that I would have to go online and do this myself. I am unsure why they had to be affiliated with Flybus to help me phone the company as I did not want to make an international call on my mobile. I did not want to start an argument so I left the desk feeling very anxious about how I was going to get to the airport, I do not believe the staff cared. The wifi did not work in my room that night so I decided to sit in their empty restaurant to use the wifi and calm down but one of the men came up to me straight away and told me that I couldn't sit there as it was only for people that were eating at the restaurant. He did not ask me if I wanted anything to eat at their restaurant. I informed him of the problem with the wifi, they did not appear to believe me. They went back and forth to check it but ultimately they could not fix it and by that point I did not want to interact with the staff any longer as they made me feel very uncomfortable. I sat in the kitchen which was nice. This interaction was unfortunate as it was the only time I asked for help, I got the feeling they would not be able to recommend or assist with anything. I would not recommend this hostel to anyone who is visiting Reykjavik for...
Read moreI stayed at this hostel for 1 night last week and had a horrible experience. When my friend and I got there, we found that only 1 of our booked beds was free and there was a man laying in the other one. We went to the reception desk, but nobody was there (there was rarely anybody at the desk). They told us not to worry, to just give them an hour to sort it out and then come back. When we came back, there were about 20 people in the same predicament as us, and he told us to wait just 3 minutes while they finished cleaning the rooms. We waited more than an hour for him to come back, meanwhile nobody was at reception. Finally he told us we'd get a room, to wait 3 more minutes, and then 20 minutes later he came back and got us to our room. The room itself was okay because the only space he had left was a private twin room, but I couldn't believe it was already 9pm by the time I was able to check in. A few hours later I tried to get back into my room but the door code didn't work, so I called reception to ask for help (again, nobody was at the reception desk). They told me to look for the master key in the desk. I couldn't believe they were letting a guest access this key and that it wasn't secured somewhere. That is a huge security and safety issue. And to top it off, there is a room of several hostel employees that's right next to the reception, but none of them were willing to help me with anything at reception. There was a very rude employee who came out of the room when I was locked out to yell at me for disturbing her sleep. I told her I wasn't trying to be loud, but I was locked out of my room and had to be on the phone with reception to take care of it. She didn't care, and further yelled at me for wearing heels because they were loud in the hallways. Seriously, don't ever go to this place. I don't know how they haven't...
