Disappointing "Non-Touristic Safari" Experience with Crazy Camel Hostel.
I recently booked a "non-touristic safari" with Crazy Camel Hostel in Jaisalmer, hoping for a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience. Unfortunately, the 3000 rupees I paid did not match the value of the overall adventure.
NEGATIVE
The first disappointment came with the visit to the "Kuldhara abandoned village," which was far from the non-touristic experience promised. The village was swarming with tourists, and our visit to another village lacked the guidance of our hosts, leaving us with no explanations about the quite modern houses we encountered. Additionally, the desert we explored was surprisingly lush with vegetation, contrary to the expected sand dunes. Those who opted for the more conventional "tourist" route reported witnessing the real dunes.
My night's sleep, albeit warm, was marred by disturbance caused by a barking dog. Moreover, the inconvenience of being unable to pay for the structure, resistors, and tour by credit card, with only cash accepted, was an unexpected hassle.
POSITIVE
On a positive note, the food provided during the safari was fresh and skillfully prepared by the guides, who exhibited genuine kindness.
The owner displayed welcoming hospitality by organizing pick-ups for my arrival and departure. While he allowed me to shower upon arrival, any attempt to express my concerns about the tour was met with a disappointingly RUDE response.
As someone with prior experiences in the Thar Desert and safari tours in Morocco and Egypt, it's essential to manage expectations. The adventure with Crazy Camel Hostel falls short compared to these more established safari...

Read moreBooked three dorm beds after seeing all the positive reviews, however, utterly disappointed by the staff behaviour. We arrived at 3:30 PM, tired, and we were told to wait in the reception. No-one came to checkin for 15 minutes, staff said they’re occupied in cleaning. We went out and came after a walk of 15 minutes, and the room was not ready even then. We complained and the staff said it’ll take them additional 15-20 minutes, even to checkin, as they are busy cleaning.
If the check-in time is 11:30 AM, and we come at 3:30 PM, shouldn’t be our beds ready? The basic you can do is checkin the guests. The staff wasn’t even interested in checking us in, they seemed mostly interested in helping foreign tourists, as the reviews can be improved. Horrible customer behaviour towards your own countrymen will eventually come back to you.
Not recommended at all for Indian travellers, especially men. Better to go for other hostels.
Edit 1: Replying to the below staff message- We waited for almost 30 minutes, you can check your cctv if you want to. Does it take more than 30 minutes to clean a washroom ? Even if that was the case, you guys should have told us beforehand instead of saying “10 minutes more”. Your staff was extremely unfriendly. Better serve foreigners only if you wanna behave like this....
