We stayed at Casa G for four nights during our honeymoon in Italy. Most of it was amazing, but I do feel the need to caution other travelers about some issues we had and how they were handled.
First, Casa G was definitely a splurge for us with a high price point during the summer months, but it was a special occasion and the location truly cannot be beat. Walking distance to everything without the crowds near the river, and a beautifully-designed space that prioritizes YOUR room and not only the common areas. The large bathrooms, ample closet storage space and high ceilings were highlights of our room.
The issue is that the largest suite rooms (numbers 1, 2) face out over the street and are situated directly over a bank of community garbage dumpsters that get emptied very loudly between 10-11pm and 5-6 am for 8-10 minutes each time. The first night, we thought it just happened to be garbage collection day, but it happened again the second night. On the third, we took sleeping pills and weren’t bothered as much. Just before our fourth and final night, we realized the window was hung off-kilter and wasn’t closing fully, exposing most of the street sounds as if it were wide open. This was only visible from the side, so we hadn’t noticed before. Our final morning included the same rude awakening from the garbage trucks and other street noise, so we shared this feedback with the front desk staff before checkout.
The first response was that we should have shared our concerns earlier in our stay because “they would have called the garbage workers and told them to pick up at a different time.” I do agree that we should have said something earlier, but where we live in the states, garbage collection is not a manipulatable service, and this never crossed our minds as an option. Second, the front desk staff is only physically present from 8am- 4pm. While we were given a number for emergencies, this didn’t seem like an emergency. Last, we would certainly have asked for the window to be looked at had we realized something was off, but didn’t see the gap until our last night. Finally, the hotel was completely booked during our stay and there were no other equivalent rooms to pack up and move into. The blessing and a curse of a boutique hotel with two suites, I suppose.
The front desk staff was amazing in hearing our complaint, but when they reached out to the owner to make it right, his response was “If I didn’t know, I can’t do anything.” (This, despite the fact that someone mentioned the windows have sensors that alert them if they’re cracked open.) This perspective seems like a strangely hard line to draw for two issues that are the hotel’s responsibility AND have been documented before in others’ reviews. We’re disappointed in this response for over $600/night for bad sleep and felt like the burden of responsibility was inappropriately put back on us.
While I’m not normally a review writer, I do read them religiously, and decided to pay it forward this time with a few pieces of advice:
You should totally stay at Casa G for the location and the design.
You should seek a non street-facing room or confirm that the hotel has guaranteed the garbage collection will not be happening during normal sleeping hours.
If you have issues during your stay, don’t be shy about them. We don’t usually stay at nice properties like this and didn’t want to seem like high-maintenance Americans, but we should have spoken...
My wife and I overall enjoyed our stay at Casa G. It is very beautiful, very Instagram worthy.
We stayed in Room 1, the largest room they offer, which was an aesthetic dream. It has a loft with couches and a desk for office work. It is a nice touch, but kind of confusing by American standards. It is a beautiful room for taking pictures or hosting a party (if they allow that), but for a couple it wouldn’t get much use. There is no food and drink allowed in the room (says their welcome paper), so it feels more like a room meant to kept pristine for a photo shoot than a place to be well lived in. The bathroom is gorgeous with a tub and was easily our favorite feature of the suite.
One minor downside was the staff, 3-4 people at most, while polite and helpful when we approached, never checked in on us. Often times we would enter and the staff at the front desk were completely obscured by their iMac, never said hello, always busy with other work. They also leave by 4PM, so keep this in mind. This made it feel less welcoming than we had anticipated.
The free breakfast every morning was appreciated. The staff baked delicious cakes and were quick to prepare us cappuccino, but the rest of the options were pretty average by boutique standards.
The major downside of Suite 1 was that it faces the street. The noise coming from the street was so loud all throughout the night. Cars, people partying, motorcycles, garbage trucks at 4AM (there are dumpsters right out front). The very old windows, while gorgeous, were not insulated enough to dampen the noise.
I am used to city conditions, having lived in NYC for over a decade, but unfortunately I did not have a good night’s sleep my entire stay.
Were it not for the space I would give my stay 3 stars, but the sheer beauty of Casa G ups it to 4.
I recommend Casa G for first timers and tourists, especially with it’s close proximity to major landmarks and shopping. But next time I’m in Firenze I will opt for something a...
Read moreWe had a 4 night stay at Casa G in September and we loved our stay at this boutique hotel. The hotel is centrally located with less than a 10 minute walk to SMN train station as well as the Duomo. We walked with our luggage from the train with ease. While the area is busy during the day it was also nice to be in close walking distance to all we wanted to see. ||We booked a classic room which had more than enough space for us. The room was impeccably cleaned daily and we had a cute view outside our window. The double closets were spacious and the design of the bathroom was beautifully modern. Our room was at the very end of the hallway (room 16) in the back of the building, so it was quiet at all times. ||The complimentary breakfast each morning really made our stay here. All of the food was deliciously prepared with many sweet and savory options. They also would make cappuccino and other beverages to order if you did not want American style coffee.||We also did appreciate the keypad locks on all doors. It made us feel safe that each guest had their own entry code and that nobody could access the building without it. There was only one miscommunication that was had; we booked this room through the chase travel portal, and as there was no email associated with the reservation there was a delay in receiving our check in code. However when I called the front desk I was able to confirm my reservation and receive my check in code. ||The hotel in itself is gorgeous, the reception area is filled with natural light and a perfect spot to relax and take everything in. Our experience here was great and we would highly recommend...
