location; I arrived into Sorrento by bus however the train station is maybe 100 metres away from the bus drop. If you want to walk into the main square it’s 15mins and the Marina is around 20-25mins depending on your pace. It’s not smack bang in the centre so depends what you plan on doing while your in Sorrento.
cleanliness; One thing I noticed overall about this hotel was just how clean it was and no overpowering smells of bleach/cleaning materials, etc, glass was constantly polished/maintained, corridors and lights were always immaculate and a special shout out to one of the cleaning ladies who always asked me where I was going that day and when she saw me later would say hi/ask me how my day was, really nice.
Service; The staff here cannot be faulted, from the front desk to the restaurants to the cleaning team, everyone was extremely polite and also engaging, which was nice. Everyone was dressed impeccably and always attentive.
Amenities; The hotel has it all, a main pool area, a rooftop pool (however this was one specific part which made me book this hotel, on arrival I discovered the photos are very misleading), a beautiful garden area for breakfast. The rooms all had plenty of sockets which included usb ports for charging all your gadgets, WiFi worked perfectly throughout.
Room Comfort; I was in Room 521, this was booked as a single occupancy booking as I was travelling solo, hence the single bed. The room was absolutely stunning, a very traditional room with modern facilities, felt more like a small apartment. I loved the roller shutters which could be controlled from lying in bed 😂 and created a completely blacked out room. The only negative here was the aircon, no matter how low I set the temperature, windows closed, shutters shut, the room was still very hot.
Value for money; You would be forgiven for thinking this was a 5 star hotel, it had a very Monaco 1980s feeling about it, traditional, yet modern, the staff are what makes this hotel what it is. The breakfast alone was value for money!
Food and Dining; I only ate breakfast during my stay, it was all very fresh, great coffee, I was addicted to the strawberry and custard croissants, absolutely delightful! I loved how the wait staff were dressed, very traditional and immaculate.
Overall experience; I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel, for me, the location was perfect for everything I had planned during my stay in Sorrento, I loved the character and “old money style” feel of the hotel. My only feedback as above was while the rooftop terrace was a great size, I was underwhelmed by the pool, it’s more of a “dipping pool” rather than an actual pool, the photos were misleading, I certainly wouldn’t let this put me off staying here...

Special shout out to Anna at the rooftop bar. The location was unbeatable for exploring the Amalfi coast - close to the port, close to train station, close to Corso Italia main street, close to bus stops. ||Our room with sea view on 3rd floor was large and well equipped. Minibar, room service, bath and shower, balcony, ironing board & iron, safe (everything you need). The super king size bed was one of the comfiest I have ever slept on and the pillows were heavenly. The air conditioning was efficient and easy to use. Fresh white towels were provided every day if required although bedding was not changed during our 7 day stay. The electronic shutter blinds were great and fully blocked out the light. However I would mention that the orange lights on the wall switches in the room disturbed sleep. Another negative was the toilet roll provided in the bathroom, it fell apart instantly due to low ply. ||During our stay we had a toilet that kept running water through the night but once this was raised to reception it was fixed promptly when we were out for the day and it was soon resolved. The room wasn't perfect and for this reason the hotel award of 4 stars is correct. ||Breakfast options were plentiful and fresh. As a vegan I did not struggle to find something to eat. They even offered prosecco if you so wished, but most mornings I opted for an English tea and soy milk. My partner very much enjoyed his cappuccinos. Dinner was more formal but had some of the nicest food we had tried on our trip. There was a separate vegetarian menu but perhaps more indications could be given for allergens/vegan/gluten free to make it clear for guests. There was no difference in portion size between the first course and second course, I personally struggled to eat both, so I just ordered 1 dish for the remainder of the week. You certainly will not be hungry after dinner in this restaurant. The staff were humorous and served with a smile always. We did not try dessert during our trip but the trio of desserts looked delicious. ||The swimming pools were too cold for my liking so we didn't swim but fresh towels were provided for all guests to use whilst sunbathing. The view on the rooftop for sunset was fabulous. Overall I would stay at this hotel again and recommend to...
Read moreGrand Hotel de La Ville A Deserved Travellers' Choice Award Winner ||Location ||Convenient. Some ten minutes from the station and ten/fifteen minutes from Tasso Square in the centre of Sorrento. ||Attractive garden space at the hotel with plenty of shade in hotter weather for outdoor dining. ||Room ||Of reasonable size, clean and well appointed. Beds extremely comfortable. Effective blackout blind and soundproofing from road outside if staying in a sea view room. One "UK socket" was welcome as was the charging socket for a mobile phone. Other sockets standard Italian/European. ||Free wi fi in hotel. Strong signal.||Air conditioning simple to program and effective. We used it at night, on lowest setting to mask corridor/ room sounds from adjoining and above. ||Bathroom "shower" in the bath. Not a separate unit, but effective nevertheless. ||We had a north facing room with a balcony on the coastal side of the property so no sun but impressive views of the coast and Vesuvius. The higher the floor, the better the view. South side rooms, have some sun but balconies overlook nearby tenement blocks. ||The hotel has two pools one, on the rooftop, is heated, in the "high season". The water in both pools was too cold to swim comfortably in October.||Food ||Breakfast, buffet style/self service with a manned, egg station - good range of foods available. ||Evening Menu - we, as a family, ate on one occasion in the main, hotel restaurant. The food was impressive in both quality and quantity and no more expensive than some, far less impressive restaurants in Sorrento itself. ||Fresh vegetables, so absent from restaurants visited in Sorrento, were much appreciated in the hotel's restaurant. ||Hotel staff were always welcoming, courteous and attentive. ||The bar menu was reasonable in range and price. Again no more expensive than eating in Sorrento itself where prices seemed high for the quality of food on offer. ||Note: Restaurants in Sorrento add a cover charge - sometimes for nothing in return! Not so the hotel, where the cover charge in the main restaurant included bread, bread sticks and, it would seem, an additional appetiser course alongside food ordered. ||Many reviews of the hotel suggest booking half board - certainly worth considering......
