Hasuwa Ryoken is the best example of how service can make a huge difference to the overall experience. Firstly, the positives.||The location is only a 10-15 easy flat walk from the station and there are lots of places nearby to have lunch or dinner provided you get there early enough. Most restaurants close by 8pm.||The main attractions are all within walking distance and the surrounding countryside and mountain views are very lovely and the free bicycles provided for guests make it easy to get out and see more of the area along the cycle paths.||The onsens are very good and the ones outside the main building very attractive. Unfortunately we weren't aware of them because the owner is largely absent and we were given very little information about the Ryoken.||The negatives for Hasuwa stem from this fact. When we arrived we were notified what number our room was from a piece of paper put up on the entrance door. Although there was a buzzer that was supposed to summon the owner or other staff, no one appeared and it wasn't until after six pm that we finally got to meet the owner and organise breakfast. Despite other reports that the breakfasts were excellent, we found it to be the worst of our trip and decided to furnish our own from one of the many supermarkets in Yufuin.||Overall we felt that this was more like an upmarket hostel where you could heat up food in the microwave provided for guests and keep food and drink chilled in the large fridge in our room. The owner and other staff spoke very good English and our room was clean and warm. Wifi was free and reasonably quick.||We would recommend this place as a relatively inexpensive place to stay in Yufuin but be forewarned that it will not be on a par with more professional and more expensive Ryokens which is a shame because a little extra personal attention would make a...
Read moreThis is a nice place to stay at Yufuin. We can see the two summits of mount Yufu from the place. Both train and shopping street are at a walking distance. The lady who runs the place is assisted by an international team (when we were there - A Thai, a Taiwanese, and a Korean) and everyone speaks some English, so language is not an issue.||Our car navigation could not recognize the phone number, so we used the actual address, which brought us to that area. We had to use some signs to find the actual location (a bit hidden from the main road but very close).||Official check in time is 4pm but we could enter our room earlier according to a note at the entrance. We were placed at room 8 - one out of two rooms at Sakura House, adjacent to the main building. The room was consists of actually two rooms: A tatami room with a Kotatsu heater and at night futons, and a kitchen-like area with a table, fridge, microwave, and kettle. There is an air condition (heating and cooling). In this season the difference between day and night temperature is high so it gets cold at night and we used the heater.||We used the open air hot-springs. There are two rooms that can be locked from the inside so there is privacy. ||Meals were fine: dinner and breakfast - both...
Read moreI stayed at this ryokan with my wife during our Yufuin visit. The ryokan itself was nice and the staffs were fluent in English (they were not Japanese but Thai, Taiwanese, and maybe Korean, though the owner was Japanese). Our room was a Japanese-style room but we had to use a shared toilet and bathroom with another room in the same building (as you may imagine a house with two bedroom and one bathroom and toilet) which we did not have any problem with that at all. There were two outdoor onsens which were private as you could lock the door and enjoy the hot bath as long as you wanted. We would recommend you not to include breakfasr and dinner when booking this ryokan as they were a bit pricey. ||One thing that was negative about this ryokan was that it was quite far from Yufuin station. Anyway, you can request a transportation between the ryokan and Yufuin station since they do offer a free...
