We spent a couple nights here while visiting Yufuin. We were there during the week, not long after a 7.1 earthquake further south on Kyushu. The ryokan is a short walk from the train and bus station, along the river that runs through town. ||||Our room was fairly large and we had a small table outside where we could sit and enjoy the garden. The baths have an indoor tub that's around 106 degrees farenheit, and an outdoor tub that's not as warm, so we were advised to start in the outdoor tub then move inside for the hot soak. The combination was excellent. There's also a tub in the room that you can fill from the source, but we were happy to use the bigger baths. It's been about a month since an earthquake struck Kyushu, and that caused cancellations, which is why we were able to book our room. We felt like we had the place to ourselves but there were guests in other rooms, perhaps using their own baths.||||Breakfast was included and was served to us in our room or at the table in the garden. Dinner is not offered, but our host showed us information about restaurants, and we were happy with his advice. ||||This resort offers a beautiful garden, a relaxing bathhouse, a convenient location and a friendly host. It is not the Four Seasons. You bring your towel from the room to the bath, for example, and you dine in town. It's not pretentious, but it is a very special place with a friendly host and a relaxing ambience. We'll be back should we have another opportunity to...
Read moreA small, lovely Japanese inn (ryokan), located within walking distance from Yufuin Station. The service staff were very polite and friendly and even let us check-in early since the room was already made up. ||It was a really great experience! The staff helped carry our luggage to our room and set it up nicely. We were then given a clear orientation of the room and public onsen so we knew what facilities were available. Stayed in the "Momiji" room which was clean and in good condition.||PLUS SIDE|+ Private onsen in your room. A really cool experience to have if you haven't done so before.|+ Traditional Japanese breakfast served to you in your room.|+ The river just outside which is great for taking pictures.|+ The inn is small and so, quite private. Nice and quiet (without feeling dodgy).|+ You can leave your luggage with the reception if you arrive early or want to explore the area past checkout time.||Yes, there is WIFI.||Do go during the Sakura / autumn seasons. It was lovely even though it wasn't peak season but if you open the window in your room, there is a...
Read moreExpensive ryokan at usd 280 a night with only breakfast included. Breakfast was excellent. Public shower onsen was good. Private shower onsen is outdoors and really cold so no an option when we went in end March. Wanted to charge us extra 8,000 yen for a third person. In the end we went for the option of extra 6,000 yen for one more persons breakfast and without an extra futon.
Booking triple rooms through Expedia is tricky in Japan as they do not allow you to book 3 persons in a room, or the room availability disappears once you say you have 3 persons. Trying to communicate with the owner after you have booked is also difficult as many of them do not speak English.
In the end, being made to pay extra when you are not expecting it is not pleasant when you had the intention to be upfront about the number of people you have in your travel party. You also have no idea before hand how much they want to charge you for an extra person. I believe most people do not like the...
