I really, really wanted this hostel to be good but sadly it failed at every opportunity. My boyfriend and I had been staying in an apartment in Cusco for 6 weeks and we needed a few days in the centre before departing. I had walked passed Mamma Cusco hostel many times and I liked the fact it was on a quiet street with no cars so I booked for 3 nights (with my boyfriend joining me for 1 night).||||I didn't check the online reviews of Mamma Cusco at booking and I regret that decision as I am sad to report all the negative reviews are true!||||HOT WATER – there isn't any…or none that I experienced.||I had a private room with bathroom but there was no hot water. One morning I managed a Luke warm shower but had to go upstairs to use the shared bathroom. This was not what I paid for and when I was offered a bucket of hot water to sponge bath myself in the shared bathroom it was completely unacceptable and a bit of an insult!!||At no stage was an apology OR room discount offered.||||BEDROOM – cold and noisy||My room was on the ground floor and it gets pretty cold at night, even with the thick heavy blankets on the bed. Also the place is noisy, I thought that choosing a hostel off a main road would mean I would avoid this – I WAS WRONG! The entrance is always locked from the inside and the only way to gain entry is to ring the doorbell. Which is delightful when people are coming back at 1 and 2am. This also proves a problem for early morning tours as you have to knock on Mamma and Papa Cusco’s room to get them to let you out.||||BREAKFAST - very basic||It’s included in the room rate; 2 stale bread rolls, jam, butter, coffee and tea. I was not pleased when Mamma Cusco charged my boyfriend an extra 5 soles for this, he already paid 30 soles (on top of my 65 sole nightly rate) to stay in my room the night before his trek. After living in Cusco for 6 weeks I know these ingredients would cost all of 1 sole (if that).||||OVERALL – avoid and stay somewhere||else||I was so disappointed with Mamma Cusco Hotsel. It could be such a great little place but they just seem to be happy with providing guests with poor amenities and looking for ways to undeservedly take their money. Such a shame. So my advice is find somewhere else and don't make the same...
Read moreWhere do I begin! This was my first experience staying at a hostal and I was very open to the experience. Let me start by saying that Mamma Cusco and Pappa Cusco try to be nice and accommodating but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this place is not one that I would recommend to anyone. I wasn’t to bothered that my room didn’t come with a TV or that the internet didn’t always work but when I was told that I couldn’t take a shower do to the water pressure I was concerned. Mamma Cusco offered to boil some hot water so I can freshen up but that was not acceptable. Being that we were only staying for two days in a twin bed room I felt I could deal with the situation. At night it gets cold in Cusco due to the elevation and I requested a space heater. Mamma Cusco told me that she would allow me to use the heater for an additional $10 USD. I told her that I paid to stay here and refuse to pay additional for a heater. It got to a point where I had to threaten to leave the hostal and request a refund from Expedia to get the heater for free. The fact that we had no hot water had to use boiled water to clean up the refusal to let me use the heater the bathroom didn’t look clean, the towels looked dirty along with the room is all reasons for me to not recommend this place! A cheap price isn’t...
Read moreTerrible experience here. We checked in during the day with no problems. Me and my friend returned later on that night. No problems again, however when our third friend returned (approx 2am) the lady in charge of the hostel refused to let him in. Claiming that he wasn't staying here, and never tried to confirm with us whether he was. He tried several times and was refused each time. He was left out in the freezing cold all night, and was only let in at 9am the next morning when I opened the door for him. Absolutely no apology was given and then they had the audacity to demand he pays for the room. Two of us payed but our third friend rightly refused. Absolutely shocked at how rude and disgusting treatment he got. Then she called us "bad people". Just to make it clear: it was the lady who hostel who caused all this. Disgraceful, do NOT stay here, this is how they...
