According to the story, in the Inkario the Great Plaza of Qosqo was surrounded by palaces of the Inkas, built to house their "panakas" or extended royal families; One of those palaces was the Kiswarkancha belonging to the Inka Wiraqocha, which on its eastern side had a circular building called "Suntur Wasi" which was a kind of house of arms and shields; On these two primitive constructions is the current Cathedral and its two smaller churches.

After the Spanish foundation of the city in 1534, a place for the construction of the church was also pointed out, a place that corresponded to the "Suntur Wasi", where the old church that was small was built. Later the needs of cult took to acquire the lands next to the church for the construction of the current Santa Cathedral Basilica that began in 1560, on an area of almost 4 thousand square meters, with original designs made by the architect Juan Miguel de Veramendi. The Ecclesiastical Cabildo of the city agreed beforehand to transfer the stones of the "fortress" for the work; that is to say that the demolition of Saqsaywaman was ordered to use the andesite stones of its main walls in the construction of the cathedral that was culminated in 1654, after 94 years of construction with different delays and inconveniences. It was designed and supervised by Hispanic architects and priests, but executed with the work, sweat, tears and blood of the descendants...

Second morning at Cusco we visited The Cathedral of Cusco, located next to the Plaza de Armas. This church is one of the oldest ones in South America, it took nearly 100 years to complete building and was built on top of the old Inca Palace, which is very intriguing. The famous "Last Supper" painting is placed inside of the church, there are many versions of this painting, but this one is very unique. The local specialty roasted guinea pig is right in the center of the table, and other local produce is also on the table. Our local guide explained how Christianity was accepted by Quechua people with Inca culture, the Lady Rose was close figure to the mother of the earth in the Inca religion, and more acceptable by Inca people. There are also special features in the church, such as 13 private Charpel of local nobles, the location of choir, the mirrors to help spread the mission, they all have stories. No photos are allowed inside...
