This was very disappointing and not only uncharacteristic of every experience I have had in Peru but also for this hostel. From reading additional reviews I see that others have felt disrespected by Roberto Luján (the manager of the hostel) and I have to say it’s one thing to be annoyed but another entirely to call someone names and insult them and tell them to “go waste someone else’s time” which is what he did to me and my partner this morning.
I have stayed at Alpes Huaraz at least three other times over the last 15 years and have loved my experiences there, we had planned to finish out our time in Huaraz with Alpes Huaraz as it has always been one of my favorite hostels, I reserved a two night stay for my partner and myself 6 days in advance. And then after having the opportunity for a multiday trek arose I inquired about what the process was for canceling the reservation since we wouldn’t even be in the city- I sent this inquiry 4 days in advance from the check in date - I would have been willing to pay a small fee for cancelling. But the first thing Roberto said to me was “you’re wasting my time”
I feel terrible leaving a poor review for the hostel because I know the energy there isn’t all bad and I am sure there are some great workers who treat their guests with dignity and respect and who don’t become so upset with a traveler asking questions about the rates and clarifying specifics of rate breakdown.
This individual needs to take a deep look at himself and determine whether hospitality industry may not be the best fit for him or whoever owns this business may want to determine making an adjustment to ensure this amazing hostel is able to offer the best service and experience to its clientele and keep the good reputation they used to have.
Completely unprofessional. Egregiously disrespectful, and just downright...
Read moreWe stayed in Alpez Huaraz only for one night because we weren’t happy with the conditions of our room. The rest of the building is ok. Let’s start with the pros: They include basic breakfast (bread, butter, fruit spread, hot beverage and a fruit). Common areas are clean. Hot water in the bathroom. They have a beautiful garden. Staff is friendly and polite. There is a kitchen that you can use (this saves you some money). We actually made a light dinner during our stay. Other guests were cooking more elaborated dishes. The kitchen has utensils and pans. Don’t forget to clean up!
The cons: Part of the staff were arguing in front of us while doing our check in. It didn’t look profesional. The breakfast doesn’t include any protein (eggs, cheese or ham) if you want some of these you need to paid extra which is odd because hostels in Cuzco offered me better breakfast (including eggs and cheese). Our private room was filthy, our bed sheets weren’t changed, there were brown stains on one of the blankets and our towels had hair. The room in general needs better maintenance. The bathroom wasn’t clean and smelled terrible. When I asked them to at least provide me with clean pillow cases they said they would happily replace them but that never happened.
We didn’t spend another night there. This hostel has So much potencial but filthy rooms aren’t...
Read moreI’m not really a big fan of hostels. If I had my way I’d find or dig a nice tent platform up in the mountains and stay there. But in a place like Huaraz for two gringas that’s not really the safest option.||That said, I LOVED ALPES HUARAZ! The people staying there were by far much nicer and friendlier than any hostel we stayed at in Cusco or Lima. For me that’s everything, and the awesome people like Carlos who work here are incredible. ||My friend and I stayed in a private room w private bathroom for 3 nights. (Not that much extra for short term + two people)||Here are some more highlights from my stay.||0. Filtered water for free!!!!!!|1. People: super chill, friendly hikers, everyone wants to explore and adventure and were super unpretentious. |2. Tours: the tours we did to Churup (via collectivo as recommended by staff) and Pastoruri Glacier were super fun. Not like a tour full of a bunch of other Europeans etc. but like a grassroots semi-ridiculous incredibly authentic tour w a bunch of nice Peruvian people and families. |3. Shower: incredibly hot. Incredibly high water pressure. Towels provided. |4. Bed: incredibly comfy|5. Wi-Fi was fine for answering emails and looking up treks. You’re in flipping Huaraz Peru don’t expect the same...
