I spent 3 weeks at Monkey Wasi whilst in Huaraz, and highly recommend it. I've spent quite a bit of time in Huaraz over the years, and this is my favourite hostel by far. If you're looking to do treks or climbing, Gustavo can give you all the information you need, and organise tours for a decent price (Laguna 69, Churup, Pastoruri etc.). If you're looking to go off the beaten track, you can get helpful information for that as well. I did some solo treks to less-frequented places, using Gustavo's suggestions and information about which colectivo to take etc.. The kitchen is great, big enough to accommodate everyone with ample cooking gear. Good, fast wifi available everywhere including in the rooms, hot water in the showers, ample toilets. The dorms are comfortable, and while I was there some ensuites were being built, so private rooms with/without ensuites are also available. Washing machine available, s./5 to use, and space to dry your clothes. For animal lovers, Negrita the dog and Inti the cat are a lovable pair. There's a climbing wall and crash pads, so you can do some casual climbing any time you wish. There's also gear for hire - tents, hiking boots, climbing shoes, chalk, almost anything you might need. It's a super chilled-out place, easy to keep to yourself if that's what you want, and also a great place to socialise (but it's not rowdy - you'll get a good night's sleep if that's what you need before a big trek!) Great place to meet other climbers. Store-room for luggage available. An easy ten minute walk to the Plaza de Armas and CBD, but on a quiet street out of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The first time I went my taxi driver had trouble finding the place, as the sign can be hard to see from the street - it's right near the Iglesia del Señor de la Soledad, if you happen to get lost. I love the place, and it's my new go-to for whenever I...
Read moreWe chose Monkeywasi initially for the climbing wall, having seen a flyer on our travels. Upon arriving, we found it to be the most homely and welcoming place. So much so that we ending up staying for two weeks instead of the initial 3 or 4 days planned. Gustavo and Cesar are great and have a huge knowledge of Huaraz and the surrounding area. Whether you want to trek, go climbing or bouldering, they can give you great advice on either doing it yourself, or help arrange a tour at a good price. Inti the cat and Negra the labrador are the most adorable creatures to have around. The facilities are great, with lovely hot solar heated water to soothe your muscles after a long trek or climb. The climbing wall is great and kitchen well equipped. There is also loads of gear and equipment to hire if you need to. From mountaineering boots and ice axes to rock climbing shoes, trekking poles and tents. We really loved our stay here, and hope to be back again if we make it...
