Ancestral — Restaurant in Huaraz

Hands down, Ancestral gave me the best meal of my entire time in Peru. I tried cuy for the second time here and I will say it's absolute perfection. First time I tried cuy was in Cusco and my first impression wasn't that great. Thankfully, my friend brought me here and insisted that I try it again. And I'm so glad I did. It was flavorful, crispy and juicy. It's been over a month since I had it and I still dream about it. Another part worth mentioning are the cocktails. Their cocktail menu is very creative and so, so good! And I greatly appreciate how the bartender made a point to visit our table and explain her creative vision of some of her creations. I ordered a steak and it was honestly the worst I’ve ever been served. Terrible cut, poorly cooked—like a child made it. I couldn’t even eat it and told the server right away.

He did say “sorry,” but then told me if I wanted another one, I’d have to pay full price again. No attempt to fix the situation or make it right. I didn’t eat the steak at all and still had to pay for it.

Enjoyed a nice hot meal here. Very large portions, so come hungry or share multiple things. Very nice covered patio to dine in. Staff was very nice, quick service when coming for early dinner service before 6pm. Enjoyed their salad with pineapple and pork, a side of fried local potatoes, and their Alfredo pasta with chicken. All tasted very fresh. Would definitely recommend if you want a good first place to eat at when visiting Huaraz to experience local flavors...
