HOTEL HOTEL review for a mother-daughter honeymoon (Sept 4 - 8, 2023). Lisbon’s newish 4-star boutique hotel delivers a 5-star experience for a well-deserved 4.9 rating. How rare to find a hotel that delivers more than is promised.
THE HOTEL - A gem ideally located just a few steps from Avenida da Liberdade, it is conveniently situated on a flat street instead of the steep hilly neighborhoods and is easily accessible to the high-end district.
It welcomes you with understated class, modern chic, and whimsical art. A green relaxed state of mind beckons you with the tropical lobby and botanical pool area. At check-in you are offered fruit-infused water and a sweet bite, a nice touch.
THE ROOM - An intimate 4-story building conveys the feeling of a cool art friend’s guest house. The videos in the elevator provide a visceral preview of what to expect and the gray translucent glass is calming.
It’s not the Ritz but it provides what you really want. A very clean well-appointed room, a very comfortable bed, and a very nice rain shower in the bathroom. We were so happy to come home to our quiet room and cocoon ourselves.
THE FOOD - The Animal Restaurant (unusual name) is outstanding and deserving of its excellent 4.9 rating. Absolutely delicious and incredibly honest food. We noticed it is frequented by locals.
We enjoyed breakfast daily with their innovative twists like soft eggs on shrimp toast and raspberry oatmeal, in addition to the buffet.
We had dinner here three times because it was that good. I told the chef I liked it better than Le Bernardin in NY which struck me as bland (late 80’s early 90’s) though my daughter raves about it in 2023.
We liked the ceviche with passion fruit and avocado, tuna tartare with citrus and ponzu, corvina fish with sweet potato, lime risotto with prawns and mussels, corn with parmesan and lime, a boat of assorted Japanese sashimi.
THE PEOPLE – The staff and guests exude a cool hip persona. Warm but not too sweet. Engaging but not intrusive. The lines blurred such that you feel totally at home.
The hotel was sprinkled with sophisticated older couples, chic gay partners, lovely families, sexy young things - all with a touch of posh. No crude loud guests.
On our last day we raved about the hotel to the front desk – the sleek yet charming ambience, the exceptional service, the superb food, the intimate connectivity it fosters.
Only later did the lady next to us reveal she was the general manager. She comes with tons of experience in 5-star resorts from Paris to China to Greece, etc. And it shows. She runs a tight ship with happy employees and happy guests.

After our flight got cancelled and we spent hours at the airport with zero updates from Vueling, we decided to book a hotel ourselves—and we’re so glad we found Hotel Hotel. From the moment we reached out to let them know we’d be arriving late, the experience was nothing short of amazing.
We arrived past midnight, exhausted and frustrated, but Tiago from the front desk team turned our night around. He was incredibly warm, welcoming, and attentive. He greeted us with water and cookies, quickly got us settled in, and even brought a kettle to our room after we mentioned wanting tea to wind down. He also gave us great local recommendations to make the most of our unexpected two extra days in Lisbon. That kind of personal attention and care is was truly appreciated.
The breakfast was absolutely delicious every morning. I especially loved the fresh fruits—papaya and pitaya were on point—and was impressed by the variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options available.
I also took advantage of the hotel’s morning classes, trying both a barre class and a gentle flow yoga session. The studio was cozy and calming, and both teachers were wonderful. It was the perfect way to start the day.
The entire hotel has such a cool, curated vibe—from the thoughtful design to the hotel magazine and book in the room, everything felt very intentional and inspiring. It really felt like a space designed for creative and mindful travelers.
We checked out but stayed an extra two hours to relax by the fantastic pool, which has a lush, tropical feel—an oasis in the city.
This wasn’t a planned stay, but it ended up being one of the best parts of our trip. Thank you to the Hotel Hotel team (especially Tiago!) for turning a travel mishap into such a lovely experience. We’ll...
Read moreNot sure where to start with this hotel as every aspect of it was amazing! It's a really lovely building with impeccable decor in a well located central spot in Lisbon. The interiors from the lobby to the cool bar and restaurant Animal and the exterior pool etc are just gorgeous.
The staff from front of house through to the restaurant and cleaning staff are all just so friendly and knowledgeable. They went out of their way every day to make us feel welcome. This is not the kind of cool hotel that sometimes can be intimidating - it's cool but also the staff make you feel so welcomed and did such a great job in advising and educating us about lisbon and to offer tips to make sure we had the best time. We were given a room upgrade which was lovely as it was my birthday . Our room had a comfy well sized bed and a fantastic shower. There was complimentary water (i know it's a small thing but just makes life so much easier)!
I did a yoga session in the yoga studio which was a beautiful space and had a great teacher- i really appreciated getting to do a great class on holidays with zero hassle and in a stunning space.
Animal the restaurant is also brilliant - great menu for food and alcohol at really reasonable prices. We especially loved the broccoli and the burrata. The breakfast buffet and ala carte was also a highlight. Beautiful selection of fruits and food to eat and then the most perfect eggs on request. My partner said the coffees were amazing and i can attest to the hot chocolates being perfect.
Overall Hotel Hotel exceeded all our expectations with the amazing staff, beautiful decor and amazing restaurant- can't recommend this place enough if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Lisbon. We fell in with this beautiful city but also this...
