Wow, I think my experience was a fluke but came in at about 430 (I know early for Portuguese). Nearly empty but no greeting so we sat ourselves. Eventually waiter gave menus and then came for our order. I ordered in Portuguese (which is was not only the polite thing to do but necessary as he didn’t speak English). Ordered steak salmon and dourado. Then I asked for a beer to drink and he said “no”. Thinking he was joking as the only other people there were drinking beer I laughed and said “no beer?” and he repeated “no”. Keep in mind this is all in Portuguese. So I accept my fate without a beer to bide my time waiting for the food and he leaves. 30 minutes pass watching people drink beer after beer and he comes to my table with a note saying the kitchen is being cleaned. 30 minutes later the food comes. Not horrible but the fish smelled not fresh and the steak was a little subpar. Salmon and fries were good though. Anyways…probably a great place if you can go during a normal time (for Portuguese). Still confused as to why he wouldn’t give...
Read moreThis spot was such a pleasant surprise for us. We just wandered into this little tasca for lunch, and it totally hit the spot. Nothing fancy here, just good, honest cooking from a bunch of older guys who knew exactly what they were doing and kept cracking jokes with the regulars and kitchen crew. We hardly understood a word, but the laughter and friendly teasing were contagious, making the whole vibe super welcoming. Some of the menu was handwritten, and even though our Portuguese was pretty rough, the staff got the gist and their English was just enough that we ended up with a great meal. The local dishes were tasty and cheap. Definitely try the catch of the day or whatever specials they’re offering. In the middle of all the fancy, touristy places near Avenida Liberdade, this little spot felt like a hidden gem packed with real Lisbon charm. p/s: It's not the best place is Lisbon but it's a solid place for good food and vibe. Drop your expectations and just enjoy the roughness and...
Read moreAmazing Portuguese cuisine! When I entered, you see how the people interact with each other and I know that the food will be great because many locals patronize this place. The vibe gives off a very homely and old portuguese feel that helps me feel that I will not get this experience anywhere.
Luckily for us, there was some translations for English. Notable dishes that you must try: Octopus Rice - comfort food that makes you want to keep eating and eating regardless of how full you are. Salted Cod - together with potato and egg and the various spices, something you can share and eat together. Eat with chilli for more kick! Garlic Prawns - this Spanish dish is crazy good, even the oil used to cook it, we dipped it with the bread provided and oh my gosh it was amazing. Portuguese Sausage - okay, texture similar to corned beer but can pass Omelette - basic but the fries that come with...
