Negative points: Expensive for solo traveller. Perhaps due to Carnival. Definitely not a 4 star boutique hotel. Stayed on ground floor in room 004 with a window looking onto the hotel corridor, hence no fresh air. Claustrophobic. Shower leaked and water in sink (reported) very, very slow to drain away. No sanitary bin or paper disposal bags. No tea/coffee making facilities and none available in hotel, other than at breakfast. There was a vending machine, but no full-time receptionist. Breakfast only from 8am, but they will let you in earlier if you inform them. Rock hard poached eggs, no baked beans and very greasy bacon, but you are in Spain. A shame nothing else hot. Positive points: Receptionist Fatima very helpful and Arantxa absolutely wonderful. All staff excellent. Very modern. Clean. Fridge. Wonderful terrace for warmer weather. Sadly it rained whilst I was there. Bar across the square is great, but not the two a few doors away on the same side as the hotel. Why book there then? Limited availability and only 10 mins walk from the railway station, centrally located, eg. for the market, Carrefour supermarket, the Alcazar, cathedral, wineries. I would not stay here again. The boutique hotel Palacio Corredera across the square has 1, pending 3 stars. Just as good with all day free tea/coffee facilities in downstairs seating area. I was told the ratings are all over the place and not to pay any attention to them. Book online for the cathedral 8 Euros, excellent. Free tours with civitatis. Carlos Harto Ortiz was my guide. We each gave him Euros 10. So good. Max 6 persons. Approx 1.5 hrs. Equestrian dance show out of this world (well worth 22 Euros) and winery visit a must. I went to Lustau. Not great, rushed, guide disinterested in taking questions. Visit Cadiz by train 30...
Read moreThe location was great. Five minute easy walk to Plaza Arenal. Located on a plaza with cafes that served cheap breakfasts. Pedestrianised area so no road noise.
The staff were friendly and the welcome drink was a nice touch.
Beautiful building. Common areas were tastefully decorated. The internal patio was lovely and there is a roof terrace, although it could have done with a little TLC, eg comfortable chairs, more shade.
The room was pleasant. High ceilings, 2 Juliet balconies overlooking the square, comfortable beds. Bathroom was clean with a good shower with choice of overhead or not. Lots of room around sink for toiletries.
However........
The air conditioning was not fit for purpose. We had it turned to the lowest setting and the highest fan but it still had little impact. This affected the quality of our sleep. On getting up on the last morning, the temperature of our room was significantly higher than it was outside. This needs to be sorted out. The outside temperature when we stayed was in the low 30s but it can get so much higher......
We were travelling with a significant amount of cash which we wanted to put in the safety deposit box in our room. However, it had come away from the wall and could therefore be picked up, so not 'safe' at all. We asked at reception if we could leave it in their safe, but were told they didn't have one. We therefore had to carry the money around with us, which was...
