I enjoyed my stay at this Meliá hotel. The hotel is nicely updated, everything inside looks good, and it was ideally clean. The hotel’s lobby is beautifully designed. My check-in process was smooth, and the hotel staff was sweet to me. Before arrival, I requested a room on a high floor with a nice city view, and these requests were noted by the front desk staff. I ended up with a great room on the top floor, #1116. The biggest plus of this room was definitely the outdoor balcony with a fantastic view of Madrid! I spent time on this balcony every day, especially enjoying the sunsets. The room was spacious, simply designed, but I felt comfortable there. All the furniture was in very good condition. My major concern about the room was the dirty, dusty curtains, which definitely should be washed from time to time. Also, the refrigerator was old and yellowish inside, and it did not cool much. I would replace it for sure. I would also definitely switch the chairs on the balcony for better, more comfortable ones and add a table to make it more pleasant for hanging out there. The rest of the room amenities were good. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was large and beautifully designed with marble. Having a bathtub was a plus, though I wish it were bigger. The bathroom amenities were of okay quality; I did not like their smell much. The Wi-Fi worked fast enough during my entire stay. I must note that the room was not soundproof enough; I could clearly hear all the noises from the hallway. The hotel’s location is perfect! It is very close to the heart of Madrid, right on Gran Vía Street. All major Madrid sights are easily walkable. For my stay, I paid €137 per night, and I find this deal reasonable for the specific room I got. Having the balcony, plus the outstanding city view, definitely made my stay in a generally basic room very enjoyable. I would likely stay at this Meliá hotel again in the future, and I absolutely recommend it.

As for a 4* hotel I am dissapionted. Room was small, nothing special… I would say a bit old. Bathroom was small and there was no shower cap, no cotton swabs or pads, nothing… just a toilet paper, towels and hand soap. Room had not the best view but… I did not stay much inside so, it was ok. Design is very old style. In the room there is no coffee, no tea and if you want to make one you have to ask if there is any kitle available at this moment! There is no place in the hotel you can get water or make yourself a tea after a walk in a cold day! There was only 4 cans of sparkly water in the minibar and nothing more. Be aware that the cards to open the door will stop working many times as well might your door. Double check when you go out if your door is closed! Mine was not! The system broke and I needed to change the room as I would never leave my things while somebody can enter my room anytime. The staff were friendly and helpful. For such a price you can get way better hotel in quite the same location. Be aware as well of a noice at night, as the garbage trucks are collection the trash… in my case I wake up each time. Hotel is ok, but really you can get better one.

Great location in the heart of the city but that along with the minimum requirements for a basic lodge yet to say hotel is what you will probably get. Front desk manned by two hosts with only 1 functioning computer, at check in had to wait for 20 minutes so two couples could check in. Two elevators but only 1 that reaches all the floors, at least the staircase was wide enough to allow transit with other guests. In the elevator there was a sign to excuse them for the noise that comes from other buildings. The room felt outdated, old and screaming for an upgrade. Walls were scratched or scorched, furniture barely worked properly with hinges loose or not closing properly. The chair had its fabric broken and some of the plugs barely had any juice for charging. The bathroom was the finest or newest but it had humidity spots on the ceiling. Maybe it was bad luck getting that room or maybe they need to update the room or have a makeover, it just felt old or worn out. They don’t have luggage storage, they offer a chance to store it on another hotel nearby.

The thing to know about hotel quality in Spain is that the number of stars a property is afforded is based on a government-imposed point system that is fairly easy to game. This means that if a property checks a certain number of boxes -- say, it has a kitchen, modest fitness room, laundry service, and room service -- it can receive a four-star rating even if no luggage trolleys or carts are available onsite and there is no doorman or bellhop to help with shuffling bags down the several stairs leading from street to hotel lobby level. Yes, such is the case that the Spanish hotel star-rating system sets aside more elemental characteristics like the upkeep of the property, condition of the room, training and professionalism of the staff, quality of sheets and linens, overall comfort, etc. in favor of more superficial ones. And so it was that my expectations for this hotel property and the reality were at a marked disconnect.||I have Priceline.com to thank for abetting in this ruse and who were useless with my communications via their mobile app for SOS intervention going unaddressed. Priceline paired me with a mystery "central Madrid Four-Star Hotel" for around US$140 per night resulting in this disappointing and rather tawdry property where I spent the first four nights of my three-week Spanish holiday situated in Madrid's equivalent of a noisy Times Square tourist ground zero. ||First off, the room I was assigned had visibly-apparent peeling and stained paint and all around cheap disposable Ikea-like furnishings. I immediately asked for a room change and while the new room was in better visible condition it had other less immediately visible flaws, namely a lower floor, less light, a much louder HVAC, interior doors that would not close fully, and placement on a side of the building more exposed to street noise. After a night at this second room, dubbed a "premium room," apparently because its upgrade consisted of including an electric kettle with tea bags and cheap instant coffee, I complained again and was this time moved to a third substandard room where I spent three additional unhappy nights of being subjected to emergency vehicle sirens at all hours of the night and early-morning street construction noise.||One or two of the front desk were simply not cut out to be working a job at a guest hotel and when I raised the issues described here grew irate to the point of confrontation and arguing with me.||When I finally had an opportunity to speak to the property manager who is onsite only sporadically, she was sympathetic and made vague promises to make amends in the way of some future credit for a stay in a different Madrid property but nothing came of it, apart from a free breakfast despite my emailing her multiple times to follow up over my three weeks in Spain. ||Overall, if you can find a room here for under US$90 per night and you have luck with your room assignment or upgrade, you may do OK. The fitness room, while far from remarkable, is a nice amenity when adjusting to jet lag. The breakfast buffet, while falling well-short of well-appointed Latin American hotel buffet spreads, is better than average for Spain and is likely the best aspect of the hotel given its large picture windows overlooking Madrid's main thoroughfare. While not the worst hotel I stayed at while in Spain for three weeks, it was the worst value and most frustrating experience. I stayed in numerous two-and three-star properties at or below equivalent price level that were superior in comfort and...
