This old hotel has a lot of character. It is right next to Kad Suan Kaew, an old department store that has a supermarket and many other shops. I stayed at this hotel years ago and it still looks the same with the exception of how they have renovated the fitness room. For the price you pay, this is the hotel to stay at if you want to work out, swim or enjoy a room with all the standard amenities. However, it is not the place to stay if you're looking for a high quality breakfast buffet that has a variety of nice food in a nice, quiet environment.
Be warned, a lot of tour groups crowd out the main breakfast room at certain times of the morning. Due to the fact of there being mostly large round tables, you may have to sit with other people or sit in close proximity to others in the crowded space where tables and chairs are stuffed in. One morning as we were getting up to leave, I noticed that they did open another room at the back of the main breakfast room that was free of the throngs of the loud people in tour groups. Also, the large white tablecloths were not as stained as the main breakfast room. Regardless, I was quite surprised by the manners of many guests in the tour groups who had no problem pushing by where I was sitting. They kept bumping or touching my chair as they passed when they could have simply walked past more carefully if they were not in such a rush to attack the tables of food. I fully realize that the hotel cannot control the actions and poor manners of their guests, but they can ensure that the tablecloths on the breakfast tables are not as stained and dirty as I saw them on the days that we were there. (I suggest that they cover their tables in plastic to ensure there are white tableclothes underneath rather than having stained tableclothes everywhere.)
Apart from the breakfast experience, I would recommend this hotel and I plan on staying here again as it is a nice hotel with a modern fitness room, but I will simply insist on sitting in the back breakfast room, away from all the...
Read moreIt is a GRAND hotel but old. Although it is old and has a damp smell especially our floor (6th floor) we still enjoyed our stay. First thing was that it was affordable. We are a family of 5 and we were able to get connecting rooms. There was a bit of a mishap with the bed which could have been avoided if common sense was used but in the end we couldn’t wait for the housekeeping so we arrange the bed ourselves. The rooms were big and the children had fun running around. It wasn’t that clean in terms of, under the bed wasn’t cleaned, toilets were clean but only the visible and important parts. Lets just say if you are a clean freak do not stay here. I think it’s also because we came when it was not in season so manpower was less. But over all, the sheets were clean, the bed had no mold or mildew, toilets are cleaned, trash was thrown out every day. Staff were helpful. Again please be aware that this is an old hotel. It is affordable and the most important is, it is safe. It is a tuk tuk ride away from the old city. We will stay again but maybe try the upper flowers, it seems newly renovated. To add, the swimming pool was great! Just ignore the abandoned shopping mall at the side. Such a shame as this shopping mall was one of the best malls in town but because of Covid it has been closed down. Maya mall is a 10...
Read moreI really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is definitely outdated, but you know what? It’s still got charm. You can tell it was top-notch back in the day—I mean, Princess Diana stayed here once!
The rooms are a good size, and the beds are super comfortable. We had a nice view of the pool, which looked very clean and well-maintained.
One of my favorite parts was the piano player/singer in the lobby. He played some oldies that made my mom really happy. The couches in the lobby are still comfy, and it’s a relaxing spot to just sit and take it all in.
Now, about the breakfast... it was okay. The flavors were there, but the selection was pretty basic. Honestly, for 300 baht, I’d rather find a nearby spot with some amazing, authentic Thai food. But that’s just me.
Overall, my mom and I had a lovely stay.
Just a heads-up, though—be careful with the windows. They don’t have screens or bars, and we were on the 6th floor. My mom has dementia and struggles with balance, so I was a bit nervous about her getting too close.
Oh, be prepared for lots of stairs too if you...
