We stayed in the empire for a few nights in June for my partners birthday. The rooms aren’t cheap and as it’s a 4 star hotel we had high hopes for our stay. When we checked into reception, the gentleman who was behind the desk was very warm and friendly, I believe he said he had only recently started working there and you could tell he was trying his best to make a great first impression. If only everyone else had been as warm and friendly as him! ||When we saw our room, the first thing we noticed was that it was filled with flies. There must have easily been about 30+ big bluebottle flies filling the room which is unsightly aswell as unhygienic. I then noticed that the curtains had brown staining all over them which looked like someone had spilt chocolate milk (or maybe something worse) all over them. Feeling quite disappointed with our room we went down to reception to ask if there was another room we could stay in. The woman who we spoke to was cold and rude. Not once did she apologise for the state of our room and accused us of opening the windows and that’s why the room was full of flies. I recall her saying “well what do you expect if you have opened the windows”. We had not opened the windows. She then told us that she could find some fly spray to kill all of the flies but then the room would be littered with dead insects. Not really what you expect from a 4 star hotel where you’re paying close to £150 a night. I then told the lady that there were brown splatters and stains all over the curtains and that we wanted to swap rooms as it didn’t feel clean. The woman huffed and rolled her eyes at us and in a very patronising tone told us “the curtains are silk and the stains are from the sun” and that “no one else has ever complained about the curtains”. Firstly, as someone who has worked in textiles for over 20 years, I can confirm that the curtains weren’t stained by the sunlight. If this was the case they would have been bleached lighter and not splattered with disgusting brown stains. Secondly, the way in which the woman spoke to us was downright disgusting. She had no remorse and quite frankly shouldn’t be in a customer facing job. She then barked orders at the lovely gentleman who we spoke to first to find us another room. Unlike the rude lady, he was actually very apologetic and found us a replacement room which was a lot cleaner. The bed was comfy and despite the disappointing interaction we both slept well and enjoyed the room.||We had breakfast at the hotel throughout our stay. The staff in the restaurant took after the not so cheery lady on reception and lacked enthusiasm and any sort of warmth. We had to wait over 20 minutes for someone to take our drinks and food orders. The food took a long time to come despite the restaurant not being excessively busy. The breakfast was decent but nothing to rave about. ||The vibe I got from the hotel and restaurant was that if you’re someone who has been a regular staying in the hotel year after year, the staff with actually make an effort with you and smile at you. If you are someone who is visiting as a one off, like myself, they aren’t interested in you at all and are quite frankly unpleasant and tense to be around. They look and talk to you like you’re something on the bottom of their shoe. All in all, a highly disappointing stay as the building has so much potential. We won’t be visiting again as we want to feel relaxed on holiday and not be belittled by rude staff. Next time we will stay in the...
Read moreThis hotel doesn't deserve 4 stars. On arrival, I was allocated Room 62 a superior room. It was at the top and back of the hotel... and the ancient rear lift to get close to my room was not working. Access was a maze of narrow corridors and stairs to try and find my room, The room was spacious with a double and a king size bed, but the room was cold as the radiator had been turned off. There was a draught coming through the bottom of the window (photo) and I could not close it fully. I noted that the hotel had stupidly put expensive long curtains in front of the window which when pulled across at night would cause all of the radiator heat to go upwards and through the draughty window because it could not circulate past the curtains into the room (photo). On approaching the bathroom with the door open, I could clearly see a line of dirt under the top edge of the toilet pan. It should have been visible to any person cleaning the room (Photo). Great first night’s sleep.... good beds and bedding pillows etc then up at 8 am for a shower..... or so I thought...... no water coming out of the hot tap on the basin or shower... just gurgling...... I called reception and expected firstly an apology... I got nothing just a comment "I will get the boiler checked". I later bumped into the occupants of Room 69 as they were departing. They told me that they had been without hot water at peak times throughout their 4 day stay. No-one ever called me back to see if the supply had resumed. This hotel knows it has a problem with the top rooms... so I suggest don't stay in rooms 59 to 69 if you want a hot shower in the morning. Guests entering the hotel have to walk through a gauntlet of cigarette smoke because smokers are stood less than a metre from the double doors.... Every time the doors open... wind blows smoke into the lobby. Breakfast was excellent, top quality bacon, sausages and lovely eggs all cooked to order and delivered to you table. This hotel boasts about its family ownership and history….. it clearly has plenty of loyal, customers who have been staying there 2 or 3 times a year for many years. A large percentage of them are elderly and I can fully see why they like the hotel. I did not see any hands-on family owners in the hotel and the majority of the staff are foreign workers from Eastern Europe. I was staying at the Empire on a 50% off rack rates 2 day stay. The full price per night should have been £175 or £350 for the two nights. That was for a superior room with a side view. Would I stay at this hotel again? No, not at full price and certainly not in any room numbering...
Read moreHaving enjoyed a pre-booked meal at the Empire Hotel Llandudno on the 10th December 2016 my partner and I decided to sit and enjoy dance music provided as part of the hotel entertainment. The music and dance were not in a restricted area or part of a private function so we decided to sit at a small table with two vacant seats-seats that had been unoccupied for quite some time.Within minutes however the duty receptionist challenged us as to who we were and requested we vacate the chairs as we weren't residents despite our having a meal there, My partner and I politely agreed to finish our drinks then leave the table. A party of residents on the opposite side of the dance floor on seeing his confrontational approach and our obvious embarrassment kindly invited us to sit alongside them as they had two spare seats,Within moments the manager Elyse appeared from nowhere storming across the dance floor in a threatening and aggressive manner informing us that we were non residents and as such were not eligible to sit in this area either. We again felt very uncomfortable and acutely embarrassed in front of the other hotel guests. We felt that we were being personally attacked by this individual who was behaving in an aggressive, unreasonable and extremely arrogant way. Elyse's rude behaviour was beyond redemption made us feel insignificant whilst she herself was full of her own self importance. She demanded we leave immediately despite my partner asking if we could go back into the restaurant bar to buy a drink. and listen to the music from there. Elyse forced herself into our personal space and said 'I don't allow you to do this-its my hotel I am the owner-you have to leave!' The evening was completely ruined and we still remain in shock as to the rudeness and ignorance displayed by this woman who showed no remorse, personal skills, manners or respect to ourselves as paying guests. We remained polite and calm throughout this unpleasant experience but were shocked as to how someone in her position as manager of a hotel and representative of the BHA could behave so rudely. Her distinct lack of manners over two empty chairs is beyond belief- what happened...
