Nice enough decor and pleasant woman took our order for a pint of well kept IPA and a ginger beer. Then ordered fish and chips plus scampi and chips. I knew the prices on the menu were top end of pub food but thought the food would be especially good. A moderate sized piece of fish arrived with some very soggy chips. The scampi quantity was below average and again with soggy chips. We decided to just eat as we didn’t want to wait for more chips to be made and it was the end of an awful days weather on the first day of three in the town. The food and drinks were £41.00 which I thought was excessive really and when the barman asked was everything okay I said I was disappointed. He asked why and I said the chips were soggy and quantity poor. The response was “Oh” and off he scurried.
Edit to original post. I appreciate your measured response to my comments. As I put in the post I was expecting something a bit special for £41 for two bar meals and two drinks and that as we had a schedule for the evening I didn’t want to delay the meal by complaining and having the kitchen staff remake the food especially as the pub seemed to be understaffed. Thanks again for...
Read moreDecided to to visit this pub for Sunday Lunch as we knew it was under new management and haven’t tried it before, an offer in the Daily Mirror had swayed this decision, offering a free pint in a Marstons Pub, I checked before hand on the website that it was participating in the offer and it was. When we arrived the girl behind the bar didn’t know anything about it, so phoned for someone else to come and speak to us, a gentleman approached and stated because they are a maned house they weren’t participating, I explained it was on Marstons website that they were, he didn’t want to know, I also explained we would of stayed for more drinks and food and had friends joining us, this experience was very embarrassing and disappointing, we left and will not return. I have since escalated our experience to Marstons, who have said we should have not gone through what we experienced and that the voucher should have been redeemed and will investigate. Marstons have apologised and offered us a £10 credit for one of their pubs, which is a perfect example of customer service, unlike...
Read moreWe had the pleasure of enjoying Sunday lunch here a few years ago and still remember how delicious it was. Since we had our dog with us, we dined outside, but luckily the terrace area is covered, which was perfect—especially since you never can tell how the weather will turn out! We visited on a Saturday lunchtime, and the menu offered such a great variety that it was hard to choose—loads of options from sandwiches to main courses at different prices, so there’s something for everyone.
Paying inside was quick and easy, and the staff were absolutely lovely—so friendly and helpful. There were six of us, each choosing something different, and the team did a fantastic job bringing it all out at the same time, piping hot and ready to enjoy. Every dish was just perfect and clearly homemade—the chili, carbonara with fresh pasta, lightly battered cod, Hen & Hog burger (chicken and bacon in a toasted bun), scampi, and even homemade chips.
We definitely plan to make the Queen Victoria a regular stop whenever we’re in town! And have already recommended to several...
