Really disappointed! I wanted to spend some time with my friend and enjoy one drink (a cider) with some food. To my surprise I was asked for ID, despite clearly being over 18 (I am 26 years old!). Fair enough - it was my fault I did not have ID on me. I did show picture of my ID from my phone, they said that was unacceptable, (also fair enough). However, after already spending our money on food and drink with the imagination of relaxing and enjoying some time out, I was quite rudely being told to leave.
I am now aware of the policy of the pub after 9pm but the meaner of which I was spoken to was just unfriendly and unprofessional.
The problem escalated after the waitress said we could take our dinner away or just have nothing, she did not hint or give a refund as an option for us. We spoke to the waitress calmly and asked if we could just eat the food in the pub and not have any alcohol instead. She went to speak to her manger...When she came back a refund was now an option. At first, we chose to take away food, but then quickly changed our mind in LESS than one minute to say we actually did want a refund and that we just wanted to leave.
My friend spoke to the waitress to ask for a refund, but wait...now it is not possible because the food had already been made? If that was the case why was refund ever an option? My friend then asks if we could have a refund on the drinks instead since I was being kicked out and he didn´t want to sit on his own. At first they said "no" because the pint had already been poured...but they then later changed their mind.
Whilst the waitress was speaking to us, we both felt she was very rude with us and very unprofessional. We felt they just were going to take our money and kick us out with no warning. As well when my friend spoke to (who I assume is) the manager was very rude also. My friend felt he was very passive aggressive. In the end we just took our food and left to enjoy it cold! We had to wait until we got home to reheat the food in the oven....
The IRONY is only a couple of hours earlier I was with my classmates from University having lunch. I ordered a CIDER and no...

Ordered through the app 2 meals with drinks (the drink is supposed to come with the meal) Food arrived promptly however no drinks, kindly asked a waitress who tried her best to sort it out for us, unfortunately my mum had finished her food and I no longer wanted to eat as I had no drink. I went up to the bar to tell them my situation to be told there’s nothing they can do, so I requested a refund in which the manager took over. This manager is the most RUDEST and UN knowledgeable man known to customer service. When I approached him with my concerns he brushed me to the side and said I will have to access a refund through head office????!!! I told him that’s not how it works and that I would like to be refunded for the goods I had paid for and not received, he said I had an attitude and asked me to leave (still no refund or drinks) £20 worth may I add. He then went to a till pretended to process a refund when I asked for a receipt he said they have no till roll I asked how I’m supposed to know I have a refund so I can do a debit card dispute with my bank if not and he point blank refused and then walked away whilst muttering something about my eyelashes trying to insult me. I returned to my table and brought back the food I didn’t touch and asked my mum to ask him if he had refunded, in which he claims he has.
I will now be waiting 3-5 working days for my supposed refund and if it hasn’t arrived I will be calling head office about the DUTY MANAGER on shift 01/03/25 @ 3pm
DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR MONEY AND NOT RECEIVE YOUR ITEMS AND BE REFUSED A REFUND AND INSULTED/ABUSED BY DUTY MANAGER…
EDIT - it’s now 24/04/25 and there is still no refund as expected as he wouldn’t provide me with a receipt:(I have my orders online and am going to dispute it...
Read moreThis is a review for the pub, not the hotel. It is a fairly new large Wetherspoons pub in a very nicely refurbished historic building, including different rooms and areas inside, one being a modern bar area, and a fairly large patio type seating terrace outdoors which is a nice place to sit on a warm or dry day. Wetherspoons usually are good at attention to local historical detail and connections. Here there are lots of reminders of the historic Bull & Stirrup pub and bull motifs around (look out above the bar, and in the beer garden), as well as Chester history. It is in a convenient location just outside of the historic walls. Good value food from the usual extensive Wetherspoons menu. The bar has British and imported draft beers, wines and spirits at good or competitive prices and has a range of draught traditional British real ales for fans like me. Usually it has traditional British beer as well as modern craft type beer. The regular ales that appear in Wetherspoons in general are often dull or excessively strong. My only complaint is that as in many Wetherspoons pubs they sometimes don't offer a traditonal 'bitter' or best bitter. Today was my second visit in a week where the ale wanted to get was on a pump clip but it wasn't in fact on (being served). This is a problem in some pubs with young or inexperienced staff and seems to be a problem in multiple Wetherspoons pubs. The staff have not been trained in the usual pub etiquetted - if a beer is not available to turn the pump clip around. This avoids disappointment and promoting a beer that they are not selling. That aside this is a very...
