We had a rather disappointing and unpleasant experience here and I really cannot recommend a visit while Chester has so many nice and charming restaurants to choose from.
We'd booked a late Friday afternoon table here to take advantage of the festive menu, but upon seating told the festive menu didn't start until the Monday; this was never advertised on the website at the time I'd booked. No bother, we went for the day menu. Chez Jules boasts everything is cooked fresh and to order, but when I asked if I could have the Tartiflette without bacon, I was told it was all batch cooked and this couldn't be done. There were no vegetarian starters besides a salad, so I asked if I could have the French Onion soup, which was still cheaper than most of the Day Menu starters. I was told I could, but would have a £2 surcharge (a figure plucked out of thin air), which felt a bit of a kick.
The starters were pleasant, although nothing special. My wife went to the toilet immediately after the starter, but within minutes of taking our plates away the mains were served; she wasn't sat at the table. We couldn't have been seated any nearer to the kitchen, so the staff were well aware we weren't ready for the mains. When arriving, I had asked if we could sit at by the window, since the restaurant was almost empty. We were told we'd have to give a one and a half hour limit, but thinking we were in for a nice and relaxed service we decided not to be rushed. If I had known they were happy to try and rush us out I'd have taken them up on this.
My wife returned to cooling food, and when we asked why the rush, we weren't given any sort of sensible answer. The mains were again fine, albeit nothing remarkable, and a bit small on the mains and dauphinoise and padded out with vegetables, when we were looking forward to the former.
We didn't bother with desserts. We had been looking forward to this meal as our first meal out in months (we're new parents) but the whole experience felt disappointing and I wish we hadn't bothered.
Do not go here; there are plenty of nice restaurants throughout Chester. There are some fantastic Spanish, Italian and Japanese cuisines out there, with a better ambiance, service and...
Read moreSuperlative. What an establishment. Top notch, sheer professional staff. Perfection on a platter. Faultless, absolutely faultless. My first time here, but by 'eck, as they say this side of the Pennines, it shan't be my last. The food was incredible and the staff more so. Seamless service. We sat upstairs with its lofty beams overhead. We were served by discreet, attentive and super proficient staff, who included the absolutely, charming and delightful Anis. What a lovely soul! A pleasure to meet. The staff here go out of their way to make your visit a memorable one and that includes the talented chefs. I had the cream of broccoli and almond soup; mushroom and spinach Wellington and a skillet of seasonal vegetables and gratin dauphinois between us. The gratin was creamy, delicious and I could have eaten a bathtub of it, so, so moreish. Best I've had. The Wellington was divine. Beautifully presented. They also do film nights here every Wednesday. Free film showing, £25 for main course, dessert and a glass of house wine - sounds a splendid and reasonable night out to me! This first trip here was, for me, one of the best meals out that I have had, with all the right components, but without doubt, the staff were a major factor to what made it so pleasurable. And the food..... ahhhh bliss. Well, that sounds like a recommendation to me!! If you go, you will return. I certainly shall. Bravo,...
Read moreI wanted to share some feedback following our visit to your restaurant for my daughter’s birthday.
Due to a misunderstanding, we arrived at 17:40 instead of 17:15. When we got there, we were told we’d need to leave by 19:00 or wait until 20:00 for a new table. Since my daughter is quite young, we didn’t want to wait that long. We were told a 3-course meal could still be served within the available time.
We explained how important the dessert course was, especially because it was her birthday. However, the whole meal felt rushed and stressful for us. What made it more disappointing was that there were empty tables throughout our stay, yet no effort was made to reassure us or offer a more understanding approach.but it was clear she was upset—she arrived in a birthday crown and was visibly emotional after we arrived late. I think a warmer, more empathetic approach would have made all the difference, especially for a girl’s special day.
They did only bring out her dessert( that we have ordered) with a candle, which we appreciated, Other guests were so kind to celebrate her. We had chosen your restaurant over a bigger chain like Cote because you’re a family-run business, and we were hoping for a more personal, welcoming experience. Sadly, it didn’t...
