We got married here a couple of weeks ago. Venue was beautiful and we got some stunning photos. The staff were generally very helpful in the run up and I'm still really glad we got married here but I was a little frustrated with a couple of things.
After booking and paying the deposit (despite having booked the larger capacity ceremony room) we were told if we wanted to have a drinks reception for any more than 30 people we'd have to pay to hire an additional space. While the corkage fee etc was mentioned in the brochures... this extra fee for people over 30 wasn't mentioned anywhere in the info I was given. Probably an oversight but it was a bit frustrating hopefully they update their brochures. It's pretty pricey for the amount of time you actually spend there.
Also (though this was more the fault of the council rather than the town hall... so I've not deducted a star for this) - my choir weren't allowed to sing outside. There was ample room and I found out later that day that a choir had been singing there in the morning but council came up with some bizarre excuse about having to close the road - place was empty, it was a Thursday afternoon. It very much appeared like a conversation was had behind the scenes between the council and the town hall to try and push me into having to hire the extra space internally and squeeze a bit extra out of us. The town hall did offer to give us an extra space for a reduced fee but it just all felt very clunky and not what I envisaged.
In the end we gave up on the idea of doing anything that involved giving the council any extra money and decided to spend it at our reception venue (Telford's) who were...
Read moreMy Visit to Chester Town Hall, Chester
The Chester Town Hall is one of the city’s most striking and elegant landmarks, standing proudly in the heart of Chester opposite the Cathedral. Built in the Gothic Revival style in the 19th century, its sandstone façade, arched windows, and clock tower make it a true architectural gem that perfectly complements the city’s historic charm.
I was fascinated by how beautifully preserved the building is — every detail, from the pointed arches to the ornate carvings, reflects Chester’s rich heritage. The Town Hall Square in front often hosts local events and markets, giving the area a lively and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a great spot to sit, people-watch, and soak in the city’s blend of medieval and Victorian character.
Inside, the main hall and council chambers (open during tours or special events) showcase grand interiors, stained glass, and historical portraits that tell the story of Chester’s civic pride through the ages. Even if you’re just passing by, it’s worth stopping to admire the craftsmanship and take some photos — especially in the evening when the building is beautifully lit.
Visitor Tips: • Located right next to Chester Cathedral — you can visit both easily on the same walk. • Entry inside is limited to guided tours or open days, so check the schedule in advance. • Great photo spot during the day and at night when illuminated. • The Town Hall Square often has performances, food stalls, and local activities.
Overall: A majestic symbol of Chester’s civic and architectural heritage — elegant, historic, and a perfect stop while exploring the...
Read moreWe recently arranged our daughter's wedding at the Chester Town Hall. With a small party of just 30 guests, she got married in the Committee Room. It was so perfect! The Town Hall is a stunning building with a sweeping staircase for photos and lots of history. There are also amazing views of the Cathedral thrown in through the stained glass windows. There are larger rooms for bigger wedding parties. It was all arranged within five weeks and from start to finish Horseradish were absolutely excellent. Everything went smoothly on the day and the food and service was outstanding. Several guests said it was the best wedding food they had ever tasted! I was the family wedding planner, and I totally relaxed on the day knowing that everything was in safe hands. The whole day was perfect from start to finish and I can't thank everyone enough. Just...
