This is the #1 destination spot for a B&B in Mendocino County for many reasons:
Mendocino coast California rated #3 out of 52 places in the world to go in 2014 by The New York Times; If you have a retreat event for many people or a wedding, this is THE place to go. The Weller House is a historical masterpiece; It was built in Fort Bragg for Horace Weller in 1886; The Weller House is the oldest existing house in the city; It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976; It’s three stories with 10 rooms, including a 900 square feet ballroom; It has a total area of 10,000 square feet; It's 2 blocks from the beach! The owner Miss Vivian is the nicest, most accommodating host ever; Did I mention how clean and exquisite the rooms are? The views from the water tower are the best in the city as it is the highest point in town; The furnishings are ridiculously amazing. You have to see the armoire in the Lily room. I am 6"3". The armoire is taller than my outstretched arm; Breakfast was on time and yummy; the Iris room has a bathroom that is fit for a king; The top floor is a hidden-gem ballroom. The ceilings are incredible; The chambermaid Angelina has been working there for 20 years. Her love of the place shows in her work; This place is 10,000 square feet of historical significance! My Jennifer looks at Victorians the way a man looks at a woman. And she loved, loved, loved this place. The beds are so comfy, it's like sleeping on a cloud.
The worst part was having to say goodbye. I miss the place already. We didn’t come to visit Fort Bragg, we came to visit the Weller House. For us, this house was the destination. This is the Who’s Who of Victorian mansions.
Thank you Miss Vivian for your hospitality and wonderful experience. I wish you all the best. You deserve a medal for being such a great caretaker of this...
Read morePros Fantastic location close to restaurants, cafes, 5 min walk to sea glass beach. House is adorable with period details intact, original wood beautifully preserved, definitely a nod back to its' glory days. Common dining room is so pretty and has the original stove! There's a gorgeous garden in which to relax too.
Our room was super clean and very spacious. Beds were very comfortable with lovely bedding. We had a south facing garden room, so it was very bright. Room was big enough that it had a seating area in the corner by the windows, bonus. I love clawfoot tubs and bathroom had a gorgeous one. Disappointment was finding soap dispenser with watery soap. You know when you're out of soap, so you fill it with water to get more use? That's what we had.
Cons No thought to customer service. There's no basics like water or beverages. We were told to use water from the bathroom (we bought bottled water, which I hate). There was a sad few bags of black tea- owner did offer to buy some more later in the day but that defeats the purpose of morning tea. I told her not to bother. Breakfast is additional $15 per person. During a casual conversation with the owner, I asked if anyone took her up on breakfast and she said, "yes, few people did but I forgot to tell my staff. Oh well". Like I said, no customer service.
Overall, our experience was great - very relaxing out of the craziness of SF. You will certainly enjoy your stay, just know not to expect too much...
Read moreOur was not properly cleaned. The floor had obviously not been dust mopped or swept. the shower appeared to have mold in the corners and some on the tile floor. An old, used piece of soap was on the bathroom floor and I had to ask for some soap. The towels were very nice but it was not a comfortable place to shower. The windows in the room needed to be washed, could hardly see out of them. We found the grounds to be overgrown and unkempt. To say the least, we were so disappointed in the breakfast. I have never stayed in the B & B that didn't serve a really nice, home cooked breakfast,, hense the name Bed and BREAKFAST. We were served coffee, the tea water was cold, toast and an English muffin. The fruit was a choice of an orange, banana or an apple. If this type of breakfast is to be served I would think some pastries and maybe some fresh melon, berries or something to that effect. We did not even stay for breakfast the next day, we went out to get a nice meal. I don't see where these other raves reviews are coming from, speaking of fantastic food, cleanliness etc. We did not find this to be true. This stay was not worth the $442 we spent on the two night stay. Never again! Forgot to mention, the gas fireplace in the room was...
