My vehicle was towed from Extended Stay America on East Geddes in violation of Colorado's Towing Bill of Rights (HB22-1314)... for backing into a parking space... and the towing company is demanding hundreds more to release it then they are allowed to under the same law (15%/max. $60) - AND they are quoting me more than the maximum rates for towing. I called the Public Utilites Commission (under the Department of Regulatory Agencies) at 303-894-2000 to report both this location and Ameri Towing for: 1. The rules for parking are not posted, as required by law (and for backing in? I would swear it's a scam but they've confirmed in responding to at least one other person on here). 2. I was never given a written copy of the rules, as required by law. 3. The property owner does not have signs posted in the places required by law, as large as required by law, positioned as required by law... and the one sign I saw doesn't include most of the information it's supposed to (and it's super easy to miss I only saw it after someone told me where it was - too late, of course). 4. The towing company has NO signs posted - out of multiple they're required to have posted in multiple specific locations. So obviously with zero signs, they have NONE of the information posted they are required to post by law. 5. The property owner or two company is REQUIRED to give 24 hour notice by law AND the tow company is required to document the violation in a way that MUST show the reason for the tow (including any sign). The tow company has to provide the photos on demand to the vehicle owner - and failure to do so creates a rebuttable presumption that the tow was unauthorized (which is different from non-consensual - meaning the vehicle owner didn't call for the tow themselves). **Neither my vehicle nor others towed at the same time had any notice posted on them let alone 24 hours in advance, again, as required by law!** In addition to filing a complaint with the PUC(DORA) about both the hotel and the tow company, I will be contacting corporate, and I will be contacting an attorney - because the Towing Bill of Rights says that attorney fees can be recovered and so can towing fees AND other damages including economic damages from Ameri Towing refusing to release my vehicle according to the law - (plus any damages from towing etc. but I haven't gotten to see my vehicle yet). Because Ameri Towing did not provide me this information - which they are required to variously have posted, mail to me, and provide in response to a complaint - I'm guessing they didn't provide it to the rest of y'all being towed in violation of the law. So I attached a few images from House Bill 22-1314 (you can find the full text online) as well as of the Maximum Towing Fees page provided by PUC/DORA - and the source link for that is on the image. I also included PUC's phone number (they open at 9am I believe) and the direct link to the towing complaint form on one of the images. Whoever at this hotel made the decision to tow my vehicle is either supremely ignorant of the law and should not be in the position they are in because they are just flagrantly not doing pretty much everything a 3 YEAR old law requires... or there is something extremely sketchy going on here - good thing there's a dedicated towing investigator who takes this stuff seriously! TL;DR - don't stay here if you might need your car any time soon. The hotel is having them towed for rules that may actually exist but nobody knows because they're secret! - and as you can see from other reviews and the hotel response, they are DEFENDING doing it. Yikes on bikes (cuz the hotel converted my car)!

TIP: 1. If you want to use the kitchenette to cook, have plates, cups, or have a coffepot, you must ask for the supplies when you check in, the will not be in the room. 2. I saw things broken or damaged, like cigarette burns in the countertop and mentioned to the front desk the moment I saw them, because I was afraid to be charged for something I didn't do. 2. SMOKE AWAY FROM THE A.C. UNITS OUTSIDE OR GO SMOKE IN YOUR CAR. They will not hesitate to charge you. Things I liked: Most important! I found no bedbugs or bugs of any sort. It was quiet and felt relatively safe. I did see some police presence, but it was never loud or bothersome. When I needed something fixed, they came as soon as they had time to fix it. Things not so much: The room needs some basic fix up that's not hard to do. Room was clean but I question the reusing or forgetting to put clean sheets in the fold out bed. (Maybe leave the bed making on that to the guest?) They felt not clean and already used. Very uncomfortable with bars sticking into you. The actual bed was comfortable and felt/smelled clean. The floorboard panel was missing on a part and the rest wasnt on the wall like is should be. Chipped painting on the wall in the bathroom, and in the bathtub. The part between the window and screen on the microwave looks disgusting from the outside but was spotless when you open it. The shower curtain they did fix after I asked them, but on the first night we basically had to shower without a curtain as it wouldn't stay closed because the bolts on both sides were hanging off ready to fall. That one bothered me because if you are cleaning the room or inspecting it, you should see these things. When staff came to fix my shower they were nice, housekeeping was also nice, but if you expect the same when you go to the office... just prepare yourself. They want the job done and to keep things moving. Not customer service oriented. If you expect it then go pay more else where. They aren't mean or rude, just no dance or welcome song ready when you walk in the door. I was never offended or felt like I was a bother. Washers and dryers are pricey but they work.

Do not stay here. After taking my $94/night for 5 nights, they tell me they don’t have a 1 bedroom suite room on the first floor, which is what I requested before they took my $500. So I told them I need the biggest room possible because I have a child in a wheelchair, doesn’t necessarily have to be accessible room. So they go and check…they come back…now all of a sudden they have a 1 bedroom suite on the first floor. Hmm, thought you said you didn’t have that… I go to the suite and it smells like armpits, butt, and cigarette smoke, not even exaggerating. The smell was so overwhelming that it was hard to stand in there. So I go up to the front desk to request a new room. I left my 13-year-old daughter laying on the bed while I went up front. Transferring her 65 pound body in and out of the wheelchair is not easy. They tell me they’re gonna get me another room. So I go back to the room that my daughter is in, and now the door will not open. Somehow, the lock malfunctioned and now my 13-year-old profoundly disabled child is in there by herself. She cannot walk or talk, so she cannot unlock the door for us. The front desk guy came and tried to open it himself. It would not open for him either. I ended up having to call 911, and the firemen had to come in and bust down the door, which took them several minutes, I might add…it was *really* stuck. This property needs to be condemned. It needs to be shut down. Nobody should be staying here. It’s disgusting. So I got a refund for my money, but that takes 5 to 10 days to hit the bank so now I have zero dollars to provide shelter for myself and my child for the next four nights. Superb. 🙄

The hotel staff gave out my private information to random strangers where they asked if I was in fact staying there and what was my room number. This particular stranger asking about me was wearing plain clothes not a uniform, did not show a badge, only identified himself by his name, more importantly did not have a warrant. Information was given out. Without my permission. When I brought it up to management, they said it’s none of their business, they don’t care, that’s my problem, and I don’t have proof of the night attendant relaying it, etc. I said it is your business when you put out my confidential information to the public. I could file a civil lawsuit against extended stay America corporation if I wanted to as per the United States Supreme Court ruling in 2015, I have a reasonable expectation to privacy. Also, that could possibly put my life in danger when the general public asks. ||||Another time, I inquired with the management about why I haven’t received housekeeping in 3 weeks going on 4 weeks. Management said they don’t have housekeepers. Management is tasked with the responsibility as per her job title of staffing her property accordingly. I continued to push back for someone to do it. I paid for it. It’s part of the rate. I already waited almost 4 weeks. Management yelled at me and said quote unquote “clean your own f** room”. I couldn’t believe my ears. Never had that ever happened to me at any hotel brand including extended stay America. So I responded that I can’t pay you for the week unless you fulfill your responsibilities. The Management said I’ll have you removed out of the room from police. I said go ahead. I’ve been here for over 31 days. According to the law, That makes me a resident rather than just a guest. I have more legal protections now. The management called the police. The police arrived. The police knocked on the door. I didn’t answer as I don’t have to unless there’s a search warrant. The police left without further incident after literally only a minute. Because the police knew this was a civil issue not a criminal issue. When the management realized I wasn’t being removed, the management locked me out of my key card so I couldn’t get in my room. That’s against the law. After 31 days, lockouts are not permitted. Only an order by a judge of the court can order me removed. But either way, I paid for the week because I didn’t want to argue about this topic anymore. I didn’t receive my housekeeping until week 4 following the previous housekeeping date. ||||At the previous housekeeping, it was a new housekeeper who joined the staff. And she didn’t speak fluent English. Spanish only. That morning, the housekeeper walked into my room without burst of knocks 3 times announcing themselves. The housekeeper literally walked right into my room without a heads up. Again law enforcement is not even even allowed to do that without a warrant. But the housekeeper walked in without forewarning.||||Another situation was after the 31 days when I asked about my room tax refund. Because I didn’t receive it. No management answered me. They claimed I won’t receive a room tax refund. They said you won’t be charged tax but you’re not getting a refund. I double verified with the county government. They confirmed I should get my room tax refund. One day I seen it deducted from my week’s bill. Why would I know about it but the management doesn’t know about it? They don’t know what they’re doing.||||When I first checked in, I asked “can you show me the way to my room?” I had no idea where the room was located. Because it’s an expansive outside property with exactly 4 buildings and two levels each. The management said “Oh my God” in an impatient tone of voice like I was bothering her for asking can you show me the way to the room. ||||One of the staff members would give rooms away at no cost to other people willing to sleep with them. One of the other staff members admitted these actions to me. ||||There has been a turn over of employees. Since the short period of time I’ve been here, I have seen or heard about several employees come and go. That’s not a good sign of a stable working environment.||||Every time I bring issues up to management, they just don’t want to hear it. They don’t want to hear my complaining even though they are legitimate issues. But they have no problem taking my money though. They brush me off. They are short. They want me to leave the office. On Sunday, June 18, 2023, I went to the front desk at 7am to get some coffee, and inform them that I would be checking out early the next morning at 2am. Because the Office was closed, they said to call the number on the door, and that someone would check me out then. The gentleman wrote down a note, and said he would also leave it for the front desk.

Upon returning to the hotel around 8pm, we went up to our room and keyed in. We proceeded to pack for our flight, and load our vehicle. As I was leaving, my daughter noted that the internet was no longer working. I said to call to the front desk and ask what was needed to fix it. I drove my other daughter to her grandfather’s house, and dropped her off. Once I got there, I received a phone call from my girlfriend, sounding terrified, telling me that the front office person had come up and threatened to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff on them, and that I needed to come back as quickly as possible.

I drove back, and called the Front Office on the way. I got in touch with them ,and she said, very calmly, that we will get everything taken care of when I get there. Odd, I thought, for someone that had just threatened my family with police action for no apparent reason. When I got to the hotel, I went to the front office. I introduced myself to the lady (Ms. Lakesha J.) behind the counter. She was very calm and well spoken. She stated that we had been checked out of our room, charged a late checkout fee earlier in the day, and were now considered illegal squatters. She had contacted her manager, Ms. Shenee Nelson, who told her to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff and have them forcibly evict us. Due to my girlfriend’s calm reaction and offer to pay for the room immediately, Ms. J. decided to wait until I came to discuss the matter with her instead of using the police to solve the situation.

Once we began discussing the situation, and Ms. J. explaining the position she was in, it became readily apparent that the Front Office had made an error in interpretation of the note that I had given them at 7am that morning. They had decided that when I told them I was going to check out early in the morning the next day (Monday), that meant that I needed a late check out that day (Sunday), and closed my stay. For some reason, though, the system failed to deactivate our room keys, and we had no problem accessing our room.

I inquired as to why Extended Stay would be so willing to utilize law enforcement assets immediately, instead of attempting to figure out the root cause of the situation. Ms. J. had no answer other than “its our clientele.” I am rather concerned that the Manager of an Extended Stay would so glibly and stereotypically categorize their customers in this manner, and then pass on to their subordinates to act on such prejudice with zero curiosity into what the actual situation was. In the end, I was allowed, after some technical issues, to rebook the room for another night and completed the transaction at around 930pm. We packed and left at 2am on Monday morning, as originally intended, short on sleep and long on stress and irritation.

The lack of curiosity on the General Manager’s part, Ms. Shenee Nelson, is astounding to me. In an area that hosts some very high end clientele due to its proximity in the Denver Tech Center, one exit from Park Meadows, and other well to do establishments, it is disturbing that my family was threatened with law enforcement removal because an employee couldn’t be bothered to properly take a note and the key card system failed to disable our cards. Ms. Nelson’s response only reinforced the systemic failures of the Extended Stay systems. I applaud Ms. J. for her ability to take a step back and ask a question before making a bad situation worse, when the situation made no sense to her. The knee-jerk reaction from Ms. Nelson only underlines the expectations that she has for and from her customers.

That reaction is why I will never use Extended...
