The hotel staff gave out my private information to random strangers where they asked if I was in fact staying there and what was my room number. This particular stranger asking about me was wearing plain clothes not a uniform, did not show a badge, only identified himself by his name, more importantly did not have a warrant. Information was given out. Without my permission. When I brought it up to management, they said it’s none of their business, they don’t care, that’s my problem, and I don’t have proof of the night attendant relaying it, etc. I said it is your business when you put out my confidential information to the public. I could file a civil lawsuit against extended stay America corporation if I wanted to as per the United States Supreme Court ruling in 2015, I have a reasonable expectation to privacy. Also, that could possibly put my life in danger when the general public asks. ||||Another time, I inquired with the management about why I haven’t received housekeeping in 3 weeks going on 4 weeks. Management said they don’t have housekeepers. Management is tasked with the responsibility as per her job title of staffing her property accordingly. I continued to push back for someone to do it. I paid for it. It’s part of the rate. I already waited almost 4 weeks. Management yelled at me and said quote unquote “clean your own f** room”. I couldn’t believe my ears. Never had that ever happened to me at any hotel brand including extended stay America. So I responded that I can’t pay you for the week unless you fulfill your responsibilities. The Management said I’ll have you removed out of the room from police. I said go ahead. I’ve been here for over 31 days. According to the law, That makes me a resident rather than just a guest. I have more legal protections now. The management called the police. The police arrived. The police knocked on the door. I didn’t answer as I don’t have to unless there’s a search warrant. The police left without further incident after literally only a minute. Because the police knew this was a civil issue not a criminal issue. When the management realized I wasn’t being removed, the management locked me out of my key card so I couldn’t get in my room. That’s against the law. After 31 days, lockouts are not permitted. Only an order by a judge of the court can order me removed. But either way, I paid for the week because I didn’t want to argue about this topic anymore. I didn’t receive my housekeeping until week 4 following the previous housekeeping date. ||||At the previous housekeeping, it was a new housekeeper who joined the staff. And she didn’t speak fluent English. Spanish only. That morning, the housekeeper walked into my room without burst of knocks 3 times announcing themselves. The housekeeper literally walked right into my room without a heads up. Again law enforcement is not even even allowed to do that without a warrant. But the housekeeper walked in without forewarning.||||Another situation was after the 31 days when I asked about my room tax refund. Because I didn’t receive it. No management answered me. They claimed I won’t receive a room tax refund. They said you won’t be charged tax but you’re not getting a refund. I double verified with the county government. They confirmed I should get my room tax refund. One day I seen it deducted from my week’s bill. Why would I know about it but the management doesn’t know about it? They don’t know what they’re doing.||||When I first checked in, I asked “can you show me the way to my room?” I had no idea where the room was located. Because it’s an expansive outside property with exactly 4 buildings and two levels each. The management said “Oh my God” in an impatient tone of voice like I was bothering her for asking can you show me the way to the room. ||||One of the staff members would give rooms away at no cost to other people willing to sleep with them. One of the other staff members admitted these actions to me. ||||There has been a turn over of employees. Since the short period of time I’ve been here, I have seen or heard about several employees come and go. That’s not a good sign of a stable working environment.||||Every time I bring issues up to management, they just don’t want to hear it. They don’t want to hear my complaining even though they are legitimate issues. But they have no problem taking my money though. They brush me off. They are short. They want me to leave the office. Read moreOn Sunday, June 18, 2023, I went to the front desk at 7am to get some coffee, and inform them that I would be checking out early the next morning at 2am. Because the Office was closed, they said to call the number on the door, and that someone would check me out then. The gentleman wrote down a note, and said he would also leave it for the front desk.
Upon returning to the hotel around 8pm, we went up to our room and keyed in. We proceeded to pack for our flight, and load our vehicle. As I was leaving, my daughter noted that the internet was no longer working. I said to call to the front desk and ask what was needed to fix it. I drove my other daughter to her grandfather’s house, and dropped her off. Once I got there, I received a phone call from my girlfriend, sounding terrified, telling me that the front office person had come up and threatened to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff on them, and that I needed to come back as quickly as possible.
I drove back, and called the Front Office on the way. I got in touch with them ,and she said, very calmly, that we will get everything taken care of when I get there. Odd, I thought, for someone that had just threatened my family with police action for no apparent reason. When I got to the hotel, I went to the front office. I introduced myself to the lady (Ms. Lakesha J.) behind the counter. She was very calm and well spoken. She stated that we had been checked out of our room, charged a late checkout fee earlier in the day, and were now considered illegal squatters. She had contacted her manager, Ms. Shenee Nelson, who told her to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff and have them forcibly evict us. Due to my girlfriend’s calm reaction and offer to pay for the room immediately, Ms. J. decided to wait until I came to discuss the matter with her instead of using the police to solve the situation.
Once we began discussing the situation, and Ms. J. explaining the position she was in, it became readily apparent that the Front Office had made an error in interpretation of the note that I had given them at 7am that morning. They had decided that when I told them I was going to check out early in the morning the next day (Monday), that meant that I needed a late check out that day (Sunday), and closed my stay. For some reason, though, the system failed to deactivate our room keys, and we had no problem accessing our room.
I inquired as to why Extended Stay would be so willing to utilize law enforcement assets immediately, instead of attempting to figure out the root cause of the situation. Ms. J. had no answer other than “its our clientele.” I am rather concerned that the Manager of an Extended Stay would so glibly and stereotypically categorize their customers in this manner, and then pass on to their subordinates to act on such prejudice with zero curiosity into what the actual situation was. In the end, I was allowed, after some technical issues, to rebook the room for another night and completed the transaction at around 930pm. We packed and left at 2am on Monday morning, as originally intended, short on sleep and long on stress and irritation.
The lack of curiosity on the General Manager’s part, Ms. Shenee Nelson, is astounding to me. In an area that hosts some very high end clientele due to its proximity in the Denver Tech Center, one exit from Park Meadows, and other well to do establishments, it is disturbing that my family was threatened with law enforcement removal because an employee couldn’t be bothered to properly take a note and the key card system failed to disable our cards. Ms. Nelson’s response only reinforced the systemic failures of the Extended Stay systems. I applaud Ms. J. for her ability to take a step back and ask a question before making a bad situation worse, when the situation made no sense to her. The knee-jerk reaction from Ms. Nelson only underlines the expectations that she has for and from her customers.
That reaction is why I will never use Extended...
