PLEASE READ IF CONSIDERING A STAY: (specific examples below)
This hotel is not a “surprise find” in a decent area of town. In spite of the surrounding area being full of decent establishments (Taste of Texas is one of Houston’s finest), this hotel is an absolute dump. Between the “hourly” rentals, the total lack of upkeep, and the non-existent accounting to know what room is occupied or not, there is nothing redeeming here except a low price. Even then, I can assure you you’ll receive less than the value you pay.
We had 5 rooms for 2 nights during a work trip. When we checked in, there was a conversation happening with police and what appeared to be a newly former tenant, judging by the piles of possessions surrounding him. Check in was as expected. However, after receiving our keys and getting to our rooms, TWO of them were already occupied by “guests”. Fortunately, nothing beyond embarrassment and surprise were discovered on the other side of the door. After the initial shock of walking in on other people in what you assume will be a clean room, we went back downstairs to address the issue. The employee at the front desk apologized, but made the comment “that shouldn’t be the case”, inferring the rooms should not be occupied. MAJOR RED FLAG! At this point, two new keys were given. Upon opening the door to one of the room, the carpet in the room was wet. Not just a little damp like a recent water spill, but wet like a leak had gone undiscovered for awhile.
At this point, we had already had enough to know this place, and the impossible to be true Google rating and hotels.com reviews, was beyond unacceptable.
We walked down to the front desk, explained the water issue and simply asked if we could cancel our rooms entirely. The front desk agent certainly agreed/apologized and said he’d refund our payment for the rooms and cancel them immediately. We left and found a different hotel, thinking we’ve got 60 minutes of wasted time and a bizarre story to tell… Not the case.
The hotel has still NOT refunded our payment and continued to refuse to do so, citing “cancellation rules”. Not only did they lie when they said they’d refund our payment upon cancellation, they will continue to take your money, send you through the ringer of a terrible experience, and have no issues claiming “it’s the rules”.
STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK! BUT...
Read moreOne of the most disappointing hotel experiences. The only redeeming quality of this establishment is its proximity to the City Centre, despite being situated right next to a post office and directly behind a Fuddruckers restaurant. Unfortunately, even with this advantageous location, the hotel's safety and security left much to be desired. Inadequate lighting both in the parking lot and around the hotel, which led us to use the side entrance closest to our room, added to our concerns. To make matters worse, the service provided by the staff and housekeepers was below par, and the overall cleanliness of the hotel was severely lacking. The pervasive odors of urine, weed, and garbage lingered in the air. The frame above our bed seemed to have been tainted with animal urine and was disturbingly sticky.
Regrettably, the air conditioning system barely functioned, despite being set to a chilly 62 degrees. Non-operational windows prevented any fresh air or airflow from entering the room, compounding the discomfort caused by the malfunctioning AC unit. The carpets in both the living room and bedroom appeared neglected and had not seen a proper cleaning in quite some time.
Adding to the already dire situation, we encountered several roaches in our clothes, suitcase, around the bed, and even in the kitchen. When we tried to report these issues to the front desk during check-out on Sunday around 10:30am, there was no one there to address our concerns, even after waiting for more than 10 minutes for someone to arrive, leaving us with the impression that they may not have taken the matter seriously even if they were present. In sum, our entire experience felt akin to staying in a subpar college dorm room and was a profound letdown. I would highly recommend...
Read moreWe stayed at the Candlewood while visiting relatives in Houston. I was looking for price, since this was just a short stay, with no business being done, no entertaining, etc. One of the internet services hooked us up, so I really don't know what the direct website price is, etc., but I suspect that it is pretty reasonable, compared to a lot of others in West Houston, that I'm sure can get VERY pricey. Despite the economy of the rates, we got a nice room with a KITCHEN(!), FULL REFRIGERATOR w/ Freezer, real plates, real utensils (a few), as well as the coffee maker, microwave, etc. Then, the room had space to walk about, a bit, without running into furniture and walls. This space is included in the bathroom and closet as well. They could have put in some table/shelf on one side of the bed, they had a table on the other. Nice sized dinette and a big chair, TV, of course. Apparently they have free DVD's and CD's, as well as a laundry area. They also had a small convenience store refrigerator, with a few moderately priced items, like orange juice to make an evening screwdriver. This looks like a great place to stay if you have some long-term work to do in Houston, and is not bad at all for an evening stay. No pool, and no breakfast. As to difficulties finding the location, you just have to be on your toes to make that right off the freeway exit at Attingham. Otherwise, a GPS will take you around several blocks at the next right.(Obviously, we did that.) If you DON'T have GPS, then stay on the freeway feeder and do a left U-Turn, and then another u-turn back, and right on Town & Country Way, or just go back to Attingham and follow...
