Where to begin.. first of all, $40 per night in a shared room is daylight robbery! There is absolutely no value for money. I am happy to pay that if my space was clean, the doors were actually kept locked, there was a worker in the same building, if the beds were even the slightest bit comfortable and there were ladders to reach the top bunk? All of this was not the case at this hostel. Its split between two locations and the one we stayed was said to be ‘a boutique experience’ which was far from the truth. It was a dingy little apartment building above a shut down shop. It looked like it hasn’t been updated since the 60’s in the worst way possible and not cleaned properly since then too, oh and the mattresses never replaced. The windows were covered in bugs and a thick layer of dirt and the bathroom filled with mould. Every time we came in and out, the front door was left unlocked and wide open, not to mention our bedroom door also unlocked and open with not enough lockers for all people staying. We woke up to a random man standing in the middle of our room who we had never seen before. After complaining, it turned out to be a worker that was in no uniform/with no staff ID and didn’t even knock or attempt to introduce himself. The noise was unbearable! On the main road & windows always open with no curtains. There was one bathroom for 4 rooms which is unacceptable but ‘oh we were welcome to use the facilities at the other location’ 10min walk down the road… We expressed our disappointment to the staff about all of the above and they flat out refused to refund us, nor give us a private (lockable) room because ‘we had not paid for that room’. The offered us to move to the other location in a bigger shared dorm room with more people. We sadly had to choose to tough it out. All the staff member could do was make up excuses, back chat us and start talking about something irrelevant. I can see from previous reviews that the owner will snap back at any negative comments and i don’t doubt he will do the same to this. It just shows how immature and careless he is. if you get this far in reading the review spend an extra $10 and go stay somewhere else. I will absolutely never be returning to this hostel. You guys are not the lads…

This is an odd hostel. There are two separate buildings: the address listed as the hostel on Google, on Washington Boulevard, where the rooms, kitchen, and bathroom are; and a residential address on Yale Avenue (7-10 minute walk) where you go to check in. I was taken to the hostel itself by way of the pickup truck of one of the British men who runs the place. This place's policy is that it takes reservations from 'international backpackers' only--however, from my experience they will take non-CA US residents with docs for future international travel. They do not print receipts for your stay. The hostel is NOT on Venice Beach--the walk from the hostel to the beach is significant and worth taking into account. You do have the option of taking an Uber/Lyft bike or scooter to the beach, but this costs $ (though not too much). It is also not at all near the Venice Beach boardwalk, which is where the famous Venice skateboarders, basketball hoopers, weight-lifters etc. are. Rather, it is closest to the 'posh' part of Venice, where rich people go to bars at night and eat at chic cafes and restaurants by day. They sell Tekate beer cans from the vending machine for $1.25.

Good place to stay only for a night or two. It has serious issues with bed quality and toilet privacy. While the place is well located and you can park free and safely in front of the property and walk to the beach. The main issue is the lack of toilets in such a big property with three big rooms full of people, only two showers with just a curtain and two toilets with a little semitransparent door. The lack of privacy can make it uncomfortable. Also mattresses can be very old with broken springs, which makes sleeping very challenging. The kitchen is good, there’s a vending machine, washing machine and dryer. No place where to hang wet clothes. Also, since it’s a cheap well located hostel you can easily find very cool people. The host can be a bit dense, and they add a surprise charge if you pay by card.

Extremely rude host! I travelled 61 countries, lived in many hostels and have never met anyone that rude!! I booked this hostel via Hostelworld and arrived to the address sent to me on the top of the email. The building looks like an apartment, no sign that this is a hostel. On the door, there is a note ‘check in at 2195 Yale Aver’, which is 10 min walk and I had a heavy luggage. I decided to call the number and see if I can leave my luggage there and then walk 10min to the reception. The number provided on the website doesn’t work. When I was gonna start walking, the host arrived on a bike and asked me to walk to the reception and said he has 2 hostels and I will be staying at the other one, as this one has ‘creepy and old guys’, (which is true, the main doors don’t close and it looks like a shelter for homeless people, everyone can come in from the street and there is no reception). I joked ‘yeah, I hope you not gonna make me walk here back again with this luggage 😉’ and then he got nuts. ‘This is your fault you are walking, you don’t read emails (I have never got ‘the email’ with a correct address from him). You are aggressive, I don’t need to accept you in my hostel, you can go elsewhere.’

To calm him down I said it’s all good, I will walk and I just wanted to point out the he has a wrong address on the website, Google maps and HostelWorld. He shouted, it doesn’t matter what is on the website. I walked to the other building (hard to find, no sign it is a hostel), he arrived and said I was aggressive and he is cancelling my booking.

I didn’t want to stay any minute more there, so I started to look for an alternative accommodation, he probably realised that he misbehaved and went out to ask if I wanna coffee. Too late, I don’t wanna anything from him, maybe just my money back as I have been charged by HostelWorld, even though he cancelled...
