For a while, I debated whether to leave a negative review because it seemed like my experience wasn’t common. However, after reading their Google reviews, I realized many others have faced similar issues. The Airbnb reviews, however, seem misleading, and it makes me question how many of them are genuine.
The purpose of this review is to warn others — I hope no one else has their first day of vacation ruined like we did.
My first impression when entering the property was mixed: although the decor was stylish, the place looked run down — the pool was dirty, there was a strong moldy/dusty smell, and the hallways felt like something out of a horror movie. I initially tried to be understanding, knowing some hotels in Miami can be older.
Unfortunately, things quickly got worse. Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed that the bedsheets were dirty and covered in hair, and the bathroom floor was also dirty. When we asked for either new sheets or a room change, the host informed us that they were fully booked and the cleaners had already left for the day.
An hour later, a maintenance worker brought us a new set of sheets — but they were also dirty. A little while later, he brought another set — also dirty. Meanwhile, the host became less and less responsive.
On top of that, the common area seating had some kind of bugs on it, which made the entire environment feel even nastier.
At that point, my partner and I no longer felt comfortable staying at the property. However, we couldn’t leave that night because all available hotels were far out of our price range. We decided to stay one night and move out the next morning.
We contacted the host and explained that, due to the unsanitary conditions, we did not feel comfortable or safe staying and would like to check out the next day and receive a refund for the unused night. The host responded that they would only refund us if they managed to fill the room. Later, the host also mentioned they would refund us only if we agreed not to leave a negative review — which felt like blatant manipulation during an already vulnerable moment.
We decided to leave it for the night, booked a different hotel for the next day, and tried to get some sleep despite feeling anxious and distressed.
In the morning, the front desk kept gaslighting us, saying there was nothing they could do and repeating that a refund would only happen if they filled the room. I tried to be polite and understanding — we genuinely just wanted to move on and enjoy the rest of our vacation. We did not want to cause trouble or leave a negative review. We simply wanted to leave and be treated fairly. They still refused to cooperate or take any accountability.
So, we checked out and I contacted Airbnb directly. Thankfully, the Airbnb customer service representative was very understanding and helped us. The host initially only agreed to refund the cleaning fee, which felt completely ridiculous given the situation. Thanks to Airbnb, the unused nights were ultimately refunded (not from the host).
However, we still lost our entire first night and half of the next day dealing with this stressful situation — time that we should have been spending enjoying our short trip. It’s very unfortunate that it came to this. I genuinely hoped we could work something out because I understand that sometimes bad nights happen. However, based on the patterns in other reviews, it’s clear this was not an...

Read moreMy stay at The Tropics Hotel and Hostel was such a disappointment. It was not even there for the full time I was supposed to stay. For my stay I selected the room listed as a double beds. I assumed this meant two beds, not one. I checked in signed an agreement and went up to my room. Immediately after opening the door and discovering one bed I was very confused. I went directly downstairs and spoke of my confusion. The hotel receptionist laughed it off saying that this issue has happened more than once in the past. She then refused to fix the issue. She would not offer me another room. She then told me that I would have to leave the hotel because they would not let us stay in the room with three people. She did not offer me a cot or any other alternative. I was being kicked out of the hotel for not doing anything wrong! I would have upgraded to a different room or have taken a cot and was not aloud to. I then agreed to leaving the hotel, not like I had a choice. I asked for a refund of my money because I would not be staying in the room. THEN WAS DENIED A REFUND. I was being kicked out for not doing anything and would not receive a refund. This was the worst start to my vacation. The room itself was another issue. The lights flickered in every room. The air conditioning pumped out air that smelled like it was attached to the sewer. The stains in the bathroom were disgusting. There was only one outlet in the whole room for use. The walls were paper thin and we could hear people vomiting in the room over. I felt very unsafe at The Tropics Hotel. This was the least of my worries because the treatment from your staff was unbearable. I could not believe I was kicked out and not...
