The Jail House Inn in Newport, Rhode Island, offers a unique and historic lodging experience.
Ambiance The Jail House Inn, as the name suggests, is a historic building that once served as the Newport County Jail. The inn has retained much of its original architecture and charm, blending historical elements with modern amenities. The decor combines period details with contemporary touches, creating a cozy and intriguing atmosphere. The ambiance is both quaint and quirky, making it a memorable place to stay.
Service The service at the Jail House Inn is frequently praised for being friendly, professional, and accommodating. The staff are knowledgeable about the building’s history and the local area, often providing guests with interesting tidbits about the inn’s past as well as recommendations for dining and activities in Newport. The personalized service enhances the overall guest experience, making visitors feel welcome and well taken care of.
Rooms The rooms at the Jail House Inn are quite clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully decorated. Each room has a unique layout due to the building’s historic structure. The decor often includes nods to the building’s past, with features like exposed brick walls and vintage-style furnishings. It was interesting to find a refrigerator in the warm closets.
I had to cancel the rest of my stay and move to another hotel because there were cockroaches in the room I stayed in. Fortunately(?) they offered to give me a refund for the rest of night (I had a plan to stay for 2night) There was a nail sticking out of one side of the seat of the chair in front of the desk in the room, which I forgot to mention because of the cockroach (oh, and there was also a stranger's hair on the seat). They said that historically, they never had cockroaches, so what we saw must have been beetles. I can definitely tell the difference between a cockroach and a beetle haha (since two of us saw it at the same time...) I think it would have been very impressive if they had called it a concept. Still, thanks to the staff for working so hard to find the cockroaches.
Amenities The inn offers a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:
Complimentary Breakfast Nice and neat. pastries, fruits, cereals, and some beverages. Strawberry was very good, blueberries are not washed but fresh.
Parking On-site parking is available, which is a significant convenience in the often crowded Newport area.
Location The Jail House Inn is conveniently located in the heart of Newport, within walking distance of many popular attractions, restaurants, and shops. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the city
Value The Jail House Inn is not a good value for me for money. I paid almost $600 per 1night for somebody’s hair on the sheet, cockroaches and poke by nail on the chair. It might quite impressive for just one night ( is good enough ) who wants to… especially considering its unique charm, central location, and the level of service provided. While it may not have the luxury amenities of larger hotels, it more than makes up for it with its character and personalized guest experience.
Staying at the Jail House Inn is a quirky, unique experience that combines historical intrigue. The blend of historic ambiance, and convenient location makes it a nice choice for visitors to Newport. Whether you’re a history buff, a frequent traveler, or someone looking for a memorable place to stay, the Jail House Inn provides a distinctive and delightful lodging option in Newport,...
Read moreI stayed at this hotel in May and found it to be a charming place in a great location. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by an injury I sustained during my stay.|On my second night, I struck my shin on a protruding metal bracket attached to the bed frame. The only lighting in the room was a single lamp positioned on the far side of the bed, which made it difficult to see the bracket, located on the entry side. While the wound was superficial, it bled heavily. The night manager responded quickly and provided bandages, for which I was grateful.|The wound continued to bleed for several days and oozed for several weeks. The manager checked in on me the next morning, but at that point, there was little to be done other than keep it covered. I checked out later that day to continue my vacation.|When I returned home a week later, the wound still looked concerning, so I visited a local hospital’s wound care clinic to ensure I was treating it properly. Thankfully, the doctor confirmed I was, but I felt it was important to share photos and updates with hotel management to keep them informed.|During a follow-up conversation, the manager expressed that the hotel bore no responsibility for what I believe was a hazardous condition. She said she would inform the owners, but I never received any follow-up.|Although I continued sending weekly photo updates of the wound, I never heard back from anyone. The wound has finally closed, but it has left a permanent scar. It would have been appreciated — and appropriate — for the owners to acknowledge the situation with a gesture of concern or...
Read moreWe visited the Jailhouse during July 4th weekend. It's a fun, kind of quirky place to stay. The hallways and rooms have various jail-themed hardware and old structural elements, such as wooden beams. The room we had on the third floor was much bigger than expected. For our 3-night stay, maid service was not available, but that was fine with us. The bed was comfortable (actually had 2 beds but didn't try the other one) and the bathroom was reasonably modern. Some of the furniture could use some updating and you can sometimes hear your neighbors, but otherwise the rooms were fine. Our room had windows, but essentially no view of anything noteworthy.||The location of the Jailhouse is great. Park your car and don't move it again for as long as you're doing things in town. Everything you want is a short walk away. The continental breakfast was actually quite good. Lot's of toaster options, fresh fruit, and a constant supply of coffee.||Chances are, you're not going to want to spend a lot of time in your room while in Newport. This hotel has some common areas where it's easy to meet and chat with other guests, which is nice. Otherwise, we were out and about most of the rest of our time there. The room was mainly for sleeping. The Jailhouse a good option for a few nights...
