There are dirty, seedy hotels... and then there is this Travelodge in Oklahoma City. This "hotel" takes the cake on the worst and least safe place to stay that I have ever observed in modern America. After checking in, I did a quick tour of the hotel grounds. I witnessed what seemed to be a scene right out of "Breaking Bad"; numerous people were hanging outside the hotel rooms, leaning against the banisters, smoking cigarettes, and eyeballing the fresh meat who just arrived. I considered parking my car away from the highest concentration of activity, but quickly decided against it as I would regret not having my car as near as possible to make a quick emergency getaway in case a shooting or stabbing were to break out. I found a parking spot that was close and easily visible from my room's window, which was covered in a one-way heavy tint (probably useful to cops who are doing stings and busts in this location). After a good five minutes of trying to open the front door because of a worn out door knob, I was glued to my window making sure the ever growing crowd gathering around my car were not going to break in or steal it. It was a good thing that I packed a few bottles of wine in my bag because I had a strong need to drink at this point. I also wanted to take a quick shower to freshen up from the long drive. Upon seeing the shower, I was quickly disappointed in myself that I didn't bring any flip-flops. The floor of the shower was peeling up everywhere with several rusty stains peeking out from behind cheap paint. The floor of the shower was also severely warped from the undoubtedly heavy water damage to the area beneath the shower floor. After a very quick rinse, I resumed my post at the front window. As my girlfriend and I were watching the activity outside, we noticed several young people wearing the same teal colored shirts conversing with a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds, seeming to be directing them upstairs where a "Madam" of sorts was posted outside of a room. A group of contractors arrived, still in their work uniforms, and began talking with the teal shirted young people and seemed to be waiting for something. Then, a man appeared out from the "Madam's" room, proceeded down stairs to the group of contractors and young people and signaled all of them to follow him upstairs. I assumed much illegal activity must be in store for this large group. My girlfriend and I then decided neither of us wanted to stay the night in this hotel and that we should probably make our getaway while the whole outside gang were enjoying themselves in their upstairs room. As we scurried to our car, we noticed two of the teal shirted young people sitting at the foot of the stairwell next to the "Madam's" room appearing to be embracing their drug induced high and barely clinging on to their twisted shred of reality. I drove up to the front desk and requested to check out less than an hour of checking in. I was sure he would probably be used to people checking in and out in such a time frame, but surprisingly he did ask as to why I was checking out so early. I replied, "I just don't think we fit in with the rest of the crowd back there..." This would be a great place to stay if you are looking to score some dope or a lady of the night, but if you have children and just want a safe place to stay the night this is the worst of the worst. In all seriousness, I am extremely disappointed and feel deceived by the false notions listed that this is anything close to a safe place for an average...
Read moreI arrived and checked into the room. It was about what I expected for the price that I paid, which was the lowest that I could find in OK City. I stayed for five days and the first night I found to be frightening in that it looked like a place where the neighborhood was not safe. I went to bed and was awakened at 3:00 a.m. to the noise of somebody profusely beating on a neighbor's door. It was a woman, I was told later, who yelled out to the resident of the room to "Wake up! Open the door!" over and over again. I didn't know if it was somebody on drugs or what was going on. In about ten or twelve minutes it stopped and loud voices began to take over for another ten minutes. I wanted to step out and tell them to stop it, but not knowing the neighborhood, I didn't know if it was somebody on drugs, gang related activity or what. So common sense said, "Stay out of it!" I tried to call the desk, but learned later that they were already attending to it. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well that first night. I considered leaving but was told that my money was not refundable so I stayed. There were no more incidents and I got to where I enjoyed staying there. The maids were kind, but we didn't understand each other. They did a good job cleaning up and making the bed, and made sure the linens were taken care of properly. However, they did miss the fourth day in cleaning, but that didn't really bother me that much. I got to meet Miss Candice at the front desk. She's a hard worker and put in a lot of hours. She really did a lot to make me feel at home while I was there. The coffee was good in the office, but not in the room. I thought $2.00 for a bottle of soda was extremely high priced, especially when I could go across the street to get an any size soda or ice tea for a dollar. Parking near my room was a problem. Truckers stayed there too and getting around them presented another set of problems, though the truckers I saw, were kind. It seems that truckers should park so as to not cause motorists to be so inconvenienced. When the wind blew, it howled loudly around the steps that were outside of my room. It woke me up through the night, even though it was clear and not storming outside. I don't know how to remedy that except to find a room that was not near a staircase. I would give it an average post for everything that I...
Read moreI chose Studio 6 because the price was cheap and didn't plan on spending much time in the room, besides to sleep. Upon check-in I was politely greeted and the whole process of looking up my reservation and getting my room key went smoothly. Driving around to the back of the property, towards our room, "you get what you pay for" came to mind. I say that because of the characters walking around in the area and us being able to tell we were close to some extended stay rooms.
Opening up the door to our room I liked what I initially saw, it looked like the pictures on their Google listing(updated room). Upon entering the room we quickly noticed the floors were extremely wavy near the sink/bathroom. My first assumption was that water had leaked under the faux wood floors but upon standing on the affected area it seemed as if the floor beneath the faux wood was possibly sinking in and or popping up. Luckily the wavy floor didn't feel weak when walked over.
Soap, shampoo, and conditioner were nowhere to be found in our room, one spare roll of toilet paper and various size towels were provided. For the most part the room was clean, excluding a spot on the wall in the bathroom by the toilet paper dispenser where my wife said someone wiped boogers on the wall and it wasn't cleaned. The room included a pretty large fridge with freezer, a small 2 burner electric cooktop, small microwave, toaster, and ironing board with iron.
Overall, I didn't have high expectations being it was one of the cheapest rooms in the area. However I would have not expected to encounter extremely wavy floors in my room. Combine the wavy floors and no soap, shampoo, or conditioner in our room and the strong smell of hobo urine under the stairs leading to our 2nd floor room was a negative trio. Our next visit to OKC we'll pay a little more and stay next door at the Biltmore like we have in the past(we have stayed there 3 or more times with no big complaints. I didn't worry about my car, my room with belongs, and our personal safety were ever at risk, but over at Studio 6 I kept a watchful eye...
