I'll be honest that at first I was nervous. My wife originally wanted me to book a 3 or 4 star hotel, but after doing a lot of research, I picked Pirate Haus for it's prime location right behind St George Street, it's extremely reasonable rates, and a fun and friendly atmosphere. My wife agreed to give it a go and we were very pleased with everything about our stay. Pirate Haus is extremely honest and transparent about what they offer - no frills, no luxuries, just a nice and comfortable B&B that's family friendly. It's important that you understand that going in - if you want a place that has more frills and more bling to it, there are other, more pricey B&Bs that will suit you fine. But I will also say that despite it's humble appearance, the bed was incredibly comfortable. The Futon, while I never needed to sleep on it, felt very comfortable as well and it gave me a good place to rest my legs on many an occasion. The water pressure in the shower was great and there was no lack of hot water. I actually enjoyed it more than my own shower. I would recommend brining your own soap/body wash/shampoo/conditioner. While they do provide these things, it is your typical hotel fare. That's not a criticism in any way - just something to be expected.
I would be remiss if I forgot to give effusive praise to Conrad, Adrienne, and the rest of the "crew". Adrienne greeted us on the first day and equipped us with a map and tons of helpful suggestions of where to eat and where to visit. I wish we could have gotten to all of them (we'll just have to make a trip back)! Conrad is very laid back for a pirate captain and makes you feel right at home. His pancakes are a must (and they come with the price!). We felt like a part of the crew....or perhaps even the family....while aboard. We were always greeted with pleasant smiles and inquiries about what we had done and saw. My wife and I both agreed that we will be back because the experience was so nice.
So if you're not looking for luxury accommodations, but instead are looking for a reasonably priced, well managed, friendly, fun place to stay, I cannot recommend Pirate Haus...
Read morePerfect for a fun stay in Saint Augustine. The staff is incredibly friendly and personable, and the theme makes for an outstandingly unique experience in the historic area of town.
As you can tell from the name, the place has pirates as the central theme, which dominates the décor throughout the building. I was surprised to find out that only one of the rooms retained the piratical motif. We selected that room to stay in, and were quite happy with our choice.
The building itself is somewhat historic, which only adds to the charm. The fact that it is historic does mean that spaces aren't quite as large as modern patrons are accustomed to, but they're not tiny by any means. Just about any family should feel right at home in a place like the Pirate Haus Inn. The rates are fantastic for being located right in the historic downtown area, and you can fit as many as seven in the Pirate Room, assuming four can comfortably sleep in bunk beds.
While the rooms don't have TVs, they do come with complimentary wireless internet. We brought a laptop and just streamed our entertainment on that, so the lack of TV wasn't really an issue.
The pancake breakfast was quite tasty. The recipe was homemade, too, which was much better than the generic Bisquick variety. And if you're looking to take full advantage of saving money on your trip, you can store groceries in your room's mini-fridge or the larger fridge in the kitchen, and then use their facilities to make your own meals.
Overall, the quality of the experience is amazing for the low rate in a great location. I would highly recommend staying here to...
Read moreThe 5th hostel I have stayed in during this trip and a very enjoyable place indeed.||Sure I have had better breakfasts elsewhere, but in terms of all round comfort, security, friendliness and helpfulness of staff this place was great. In addition and quite importantly the hostel was not a huge facility so allowed for all hostelees to get to know each other easily - something that was much appreciated by me as a solo traveller.||The location was exceptional for seeing the sights and going out in the evening. Being only 3 to 4 miles away from two beaches as well was great. I was in town for four nights and location wise this hostel was perfect for me although I had to park my car half a mile away as the onsite parking was strictly reserved for the bed and breakfast guests.||The staff were really helpful but weren't available visibly on site at all times - understandable given the small scale of this establishment. I did not have any issues which I needed to discuss with them but was confident they would do the necessary should I have an issue which needed sorting.||There were no free tours or bar crawls etc put on however a very good guide to St Augustine hand book was available in the common area and this was super helpful when getting one's bearings. ||I would definitely stay here again if back in town and on a budget!||One improvement to suggest - another toilet for the dormitory would be great as when someone takes a 20 minute shower it means no-one can go...
