I am a solo female traveler and have been traveling nonstop for 2 years. I have stayed in 100+ hostels in that time, but this is the first one stateside... and it's my last. I understand now why people say the U.S. hostels just aren't up to snuff. This location had abysmal security with so many points of egress that bypassed the front desk and were open for long hours in the day and evening. The daily revolving "security guard" spent more time on their phones than actually paying attention to anyone coming and going. Most hostels I have stayed in have wristbands or coded door entrance to help identify who should and shouldn't be there. Our room door (234) never fully closed unless you yanked it hard (which none of my roommates ever did) so every time I came back to the room, I found it open. I had 2 different men in their 70s stay in the room. I didn't have an option for a female only dorm, but would have been nice (and other hostels try) to put at least 2 girls in every room. Also many places have age limits. It would have been nice to know this was a possibility before being awoken at 1 am to a man who honestly looked homeless coming into the room and taking a bed (a bed which I was certain contained a younger man earlier in the evening). At one point one of the younger guys was moved to a private room bc his assigned bunk hadn't been cleaned. I'm not 100% sure that the maids didn't clean it and someone just came in and slept for a few hours before his arrival. There are many homeless in the area and without any security, I would NOT recommend staying here. SLC is expensive and this was the cheapest option I could find (still $70). The hostel is certainly not worth the price. There is a microwave available, but no kitchen or cups or anything to use (which is pretty standard in other hostels). The beds didn't have privacy curtains (which again is becoming standard). While the room was large, the lockers were tiny. They should be replaced with large lockers that can easily accommodate all your luggage, not just your laptop and a small bag. This location seems to offer amenities (like rock climbing) that most don't care about and doesn't offer things that are considered standard in hostels around the world. Even in Scandinavia (double the costs of NYC), I found very nice accommodations for $20/night with a full kitchen, full breakfast, swimming pool, large lockers and privacy curtains. Please make some upgrades to this space to accommodate hostel users and please restrict or limit the rooms for the older guests (especially older men that come with no bags and only the jacket they are wearing and genuinely seem homeless and walking in off the street). This environment is certainly not safe and when I brought it up with the front desk they told me that they have no control over any of this as the hostel is separately owned and run from the Evo hotel. The front desk staff was all very young and rarely seemed to be at the front desk as well. If the front door is open 24/7, I would expect better security and staffing that can take appropriate measures when needed. Do not recommend Bposhtels SLC and won't be staying in any...
Read morewow, wow, wow....where do I start.....if this isn't one of the WORST hostel experience I have ever had in all of my years of traveling....then I don't know what is. Where do I begin? Let's start with the fact that there is a SUPER annoying noise inside the dorm of the AC/Heater....that literally doesnt stop....it took me HOURS each night to fall asleep...People inside the room all were walking around with headphones. Thank god this is my last night tonight....as I cant wait to go home and catch some rest. Next....there is no door that closes to the bathroom...it's just a slide door, so you can literally hear poops dropping into the toilet....SO disgusting. Next- privacy? Forget about it....they charge you $50 a night and they cant even put some blinders on. So basically everyone is walking around you watching you sleep....and the worst part? EVERY time someone puts on a light, it just blinds you.....SO crazy not to have some curtains. Even $2/night hostels have this....how does BPoshtels not? Want more? I got you....these crazy people allow dogs into the dorms.....literallyyyy they allowed a dog into a dorm....who does this? Are they nuts? The dog would bark randomly and wake me up, or scare me behind me.....Who does that? Are you guys okay in the head? 2 days of pain here......Sure- maybe a service dog is allowed....but ONLY in privates....OBVIOUSLY....just like anywhere else in the world....is this your first day running a hostel? Oh...its not EVEN a hostel...its just 2 hostel rooms inside a giant hotel. Want more? I got you....they advertised to me that breakfast is included....was it? Nope.||||Next....there was a crazy person inside our dorm who wouldnt stop talking to themselves, interrupting others, randomly doing things....we were all so weirded out....literally had to get security and the front desk to come up and take them away to a mental hospital....I begged them to just put this person in a private room, as this is NOT okay and SO unprofessional to keep someone like this inside a dorm....and WITH a dog too.....did security do anything? No....all he said was "yeah im about to clock out".....LOL....0 care or concern. And the front desk lady? Told us she is going to get the manager involved asap. Did she? Did anyone do anything? NOPE. Absolutely HORRIFIC experience. Towels had stains. Oh...and they even placed a CAMERA to be watching you 24/7 inside the room. Can you believe that? ||||ZERO stars, I dont even know how they can make up for this experience....I will be posting this experience on EVERY possible site I can find to make sure EVERYONE stays away. Save your money and dont let them rob you of $50 a night for this kind of service and experience. Ya'll should be ashamed. Im in the hospitality industry and stayed at 100's of hostels and hotels, and this was absolutely horrific on so many levels. You guys have work to do,...
Read moreThis hostel is a gentrified homeless shelter with 8 people to a room in bunks with no privacy, and a requirement that you remain outside your room from 11 until 3, again like a homeless shelter that you pay money for. There is no overhead lighting in the rooms. It is either very dark or someone opens up the blind that overlooks the gym at daybreak with an annoying sleep disturbing clatter.
Forget about having a shower or having time to use the restroom inside your room, and plan on showering in the gym adjacent bathroom area that does include a sauna.
The gym is a separate business, but free passes are provided with the stay. It is the only amenity that is worthwhile, and again, it is a separate business.
The hostel itself operates as two businesses so that it can skirt negative reviews and blame. I reviewed the hostel negatively while staying there and was threatened with eviction and told to leave a better review.
The staff are inattentive, unaware, and do not care. They are simply checked out and will respond to any questions with blank stares, and a simple "We are managed by a third party company, and I'm not really that informed on the matter."
You will find better conditions and service in jail, where meals are provided with your stay, and you usually bunk with no more than three people at a time.
The area surrounding the hostel itself is under construction, overrun with open drug use and homelessness, and constantly patrolled by police evicting the homeless from sleeping outside. Artwork nearby features victims of police violence. A fitting tribute to the spirit of the area which seems to exploit the downtrodden and poor.
This hostel is not worth visiting or spending money at. There was a poster on the wall that said, "Dreaming is free",. If only a person could get a night's rest in this trash establishment....
