I arrived in Salt Lake City last night around 10:30PM. I initially went to the MOTEL 6 down the street from the COMFORT INN to inquire about a room. I was met outside of the front desk area by a short dark skinned AFRICAN man, who asked me if I needed a room. I thought it was strange that a front desk clerk would meet a potential customer outside. The AFRICAN man tried to rent me a room until 6:00AM which I also thought was strange. Being convinced that he was trying to run some type of scam on me and because of the plethora of unseemly individuals roaming about the area, I decided to try a different hotel.
I walked up the street to the COMFORT INN which appeared initially to be a better establishment. I walked in with my bags which together are about 100lbs and proceeded to wait in line behind an Asian customer who was checking in. After about 1 minute, a short dark skinned African COMFORT INN employee walked in the front door, greeted me, and asked if I wanted to check in. I could tell she was AFRICAN from her accent. She told me that COMFORT INN had room 250 available and gave me a 1 night price of $134.37. I noticed a plaque on the front desk that stated that COMFORT INN HOTELS were 100% smoke free which is great given that I don't smoke.
After some more "technical issues" the charges went through. The front desk employee handed me two card keys and pointed behind her telling me that my room was in a direction that was opposite from where the room ended up being. I asked for a printout and the COMFORT INN FRONT DESK EMPLOYEE told me no and that I could only get one when I checked out which I thought was very odd since this is normal at every other hotel that I've ever stayed in. It was at this moment that I realized that there was some type of scam going on.
I walked up the stairs to the second floor with my 100lb bags and found room 250. I tried the card keys which didn't work. I walked back downstairs to the front desk and complained that they card keys didn't work. The COMFORT INN FRONT DESK EMPLOYEE swiped my cards again. I walked back upstairs with my heavy luggage and tried the door again. The card keys again didn't work. I walked back downstairs with my heavy luggage and complained again. The female front desk employee that I'd been dealing with acted surprised and swiped my card keys again. The male front desk employee upon me requesting his assistance walked up to my room with me and helped me gain access to my room.
Upon entering the room, I immediately noticed that the room smelled like cigarettes. Presently all my belongings including my clothes smell like stale cigarettes. As I walked in, I stepped on a sticky stain right in front of the front door. There was some type of graffiti on the desk lamp. There were some type of "white stains" and a cigarette wrapper on the chair near the window. The white stains on the chair were particularly disturbing. There was a puddle of water near the tub in the bathroom that was there before I took a shower. One of the towels in the bathroom had not been washed and smelled like some type of cheap cologne. The thermostat in the room didn't work and only blew air conditioned air sporadically. The room was hot and I was unable to sleep. My experience at the COMFORT INN was the worst hotel stay that I've ever experienced.
