3-Day Trip to Austin & San Antonio

Amazing breakfast on a Thursday morning with my wife. When passing the front of the property I didn't notice the sign before the bridge showing where parking was located so we parked on a side street a block or two away and walked through the front of the house which seemed to be set up as a museum. There was an amazing, highly detailed, gingerbread house on display when we first walked in and gift shop down the hall with a lot of historical information about the Guenther House on the walls. The next room was staged beautifully with a Christmas tree and even reindeer. Upstairs seemed to be set up with a banquet room that had a great balcony with an amazing view down the river and back into downtown San Antonio. We then followed the noise down the stairs to the cellar where we found the dining area and the kitchen. There we were able to ask where we could find a host/hostess. We were directed past the pastry counter to the back of the building where the hostess stand was located outside a walkway. Apparently, the parking lot for the Guenther House is around the corner of the building past the stand. We were offered a seat outside immediately or we could wait a bit to sit inside. Since we had just walked through the packed, noisy dining room in the cellar we opted to sit outside under the pergola. It was a bit chilly (for San Antonio, low 60s) but fortunately each table had a heater aimed down at it from up above which was perfect. Additionally, each chair has a Guenther House blanket that you could wrap up in or drape over your legs if you felt so inclined. The staff was extremely welcoming, helpful, and kind. The house coffee was flavored with 5 different flavors and was delicious. Both my wife's meal and mine were so tasty. The biscuits were huge, fluffy, and baked to perfection. I ended up ordering a cinnamon roll to go because I had a co-worker say good things about them. I shared it with my kids later that evening and wow, perfection. I highly recommend The Guenther House!

Disorienting Experience with Unwelcoming Service I recently visited a restaurant that, despite having a great location and potential, left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. Let's start with the positives—the building itself is situated in a lovely spot, and it has a two-story structure that could offer some unique charm. The decor, especially with its antique touches, could make for a cozy atmosphere—if only you could actually find your way around. The main problem here is the total lack of direction and clear signage. From the parking lot, you're already lost. There's no clear indication of where to go, and trying to figure out the right entrance is a maze. I ended up wandering around the main building, hoping someone would point me in the right direction. Eventually, after some trial and error, I found myself heading upstairs, only to find more rooms, antique decor, and an elevator that went to…who knows where. It felt like I was walking through a store or a museum, not a restaurant. Once I finally located the patio at the back, where the actual dining area is, things didn’t improve much. No one seemed to acknowledge my presence or guide me on where to check in. I had to go back outside and stand in a random spot to finally find the check-in area, and when I did, the person at the desk barely even looked up. The response? “It’s going to be a 1.5 to 2-hour wait.” Really? On a holiday, no less? A little warmth and hospitality would have gone a long way—especially considering the disorienting experience leading up to that moment. I get that wait times can be long, but at least some friendly acknowledgment would have made the whole situation more bearable. It’s a shame because the location and the potential for a nice experience are there, but the lack of proper guidance, poor service, and general sense of chaos made this visit a frustrating one. If you’re planning to visit, just be prepared to get lost—and don’t expect much in the way of customer care. A little effort in hospitality could turn this place around, but as it stands, it feels more like a treasure hunt than a relaxing meal.

Breakfast at the Guenther House - who claim to have “the best breakfast in town” Well, I’ll be the judge of that. Arriving at 10:20 am we were put on a waiting list and told it would be an hour and 10 minutes so walked the river walk. We received a text at one hour our table was ready and we were seated inside in an air conditioned dining room which was welcomed after walking in 85°/69% humidity weather. We were started off with waters followed shortly by coffees. I had the hazelnut flavored, which was delicious and smelled amazing. I had the 1851 Breakfast Platter - biscuits and gravy, two eggs (over medium), applewood smoked bacon and pork country sausage. My wife had Sweet Cream Waffle, bacon and a side of blackberry preserves. I was a little disappointed that There was only one piece of bacon and a small sausage patty, as I had said to my wife “I wish they had a platter of bacon and sausage” when deciding what to order. Both were somewhat bland, not supporting the restaurants claim. Eggs were cooked to order, but appeared to have waited a few minutes for the rest of the platter to be completed. Not bad, just not hot off the griddle. Then I got into the biscuits and gravy! The seasoning in the biscuits combined perfectly with those in the gravy. I was full by the time a put the last bit of biscuit in my mouth. Final price for two of us was just north of $30.00, a great price for a sit down breakfast in a historic building with a great atmosphere. Best breakfast in town? How could you even know that? But, decent food, plenty of it, and at a reasonable price.

Came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and was told it would be a 45 minute wait. While we debated (maybe 20 seconds) on whether we wanted to wait the server said, "anytime now" under her breath. We decided we would try it based on other reviews (and despite the rude hostess). We decided to walk the trail that runs along the river while we waited. 22 minutes later we get a text message stating the table was ready so we walked back. It took us 5 minutes to get to the hostess and in that time the hostess had given our table away. At that point we were ready to leave but the hostess must have noticed my frustration as she said she can have a table ready quickly and proceeding to get one of the outside tables cleaned off. We ended up staying and the server was better than the hostess, she was prompt and friendly. We did have to ask for our drinks to be refilled but that's minor. It did take a while for the food to come out once we ordered (about 30 minutes) but it gave us time to talk and enjoy the nice day. The food was good, our group had the enchiladas, taco salad, and the club. The best item was the club with the taco salad being somewhat disappointing. For me, the setting and location are what makes it great. Despite the long wait time, the food was better than average. Unfortunately the initial experience set a bad precedent for the experience and I don't think we will go back.
