This is a brand new hotel in the Gaslamp district, close to Petco park but not the same Marriott that gives you the ballpark view. But I didn't mind that it didn't have a fancy view - it has an AMAZING rooftop bar (The Nolen - which is on what would be the 12th floor, so plenty high) and everyone on staff was extremely nice and wanted to do anything they could do improve my stay.It was pouring rain, but the moment I pulled up to the valet (and yes, they do charge the $40 valet per day like many of the other hotels in the area), Kevin was ready with an umbrella and a luggage cart. He even brought it all the way up to my room for me. Then later at The Nolen, Michelle was awesome in recommending the best food and drink - which were both delicious (and the fire pit with a twilight view of the city was perfect to relax).
The room itself was a bit small, but this is a downtown, city hotel. It was just me, but even a couple probably wouldn't mind the standard room. I wouldn't recommend it for a group or a couple with kids (I'm not sure if the other rooms with multiple beds are bigger). The design of the hotel and my room are definitely new and modern, though. The bathroom is actually still a good size relative to the size of the room, and it had a walk-in shower. The only complaint I would have about room design itself is that the bathroom didn't have any real counter space for toiletries. The hotel itself is in a perfect location if you want to go walking the Gaslamp District with all of its great restaurants.
Later in my stay, Ever (like "ForEVER", haha) at the front desk asked how things were going and I did point out a few very minor things (that honestly didn't bother me that much, but since they just opened I wanted to give them visibility to any kinks to help the next person) - one of the bedside lamps was out, my door seemed to get a bit jammed and I wasn't sure if my room was cooling all the way (it was set at 66 when I arrived, which would have been pretty cold but I never had to change it). He genuinely apologized and let me know that I could have breakfast at the Bistro the following morning and he wouldn't have it charged to my room (which he totally didn't have to do).
The next morning I went up to The Bistro and the chef and another guy that was working the front greeted me immediately. They asked what I was in the mood for (it didn't look like they had a breakfast menu displayed) and proceeded to offer me options and really just customized my breakfast for me. Then I sat down and they made the Pumpkin Spice Starbucks I ordered, which typically at a hotel ends up being way different, but it was delicious! He even gave it to me with the portable top off so I could see the little ripple design he made in the cream. Unfortunately I didn't get these guys' names :(. The one who made my coffee did mention he was helping out with the opening and was actually from Indiana.
Finally, when I went to check out later the woman at the front desk also made sure everything was ok with my stay. I told her how awesome everyone had been and while I was waiting for valet to pull up my car, we made small talk and she helped me plan the rest of my morning based on when I had to be back to the airport. I unfortunately didn't catch her name either :(.
I would absolutely love to stay at this hotel again. The location, the staff, and the amenities (bar and breakfast) were absolutely worth it, and if they keep up this level of service I have no doubt they will work out any of their opening kinks and be really competitive in this area. Thank you to everyone who made...
Read moreI came into town for a few days to explore San Diego a little bit. I chose this Courtyard since it was right in the Gaslamp Quarter. I didn't have a car, so it was important to be able to walk or take advantage of public transportation. Being a block away from the the main drag of the Quarter, 5th Avenue, meant easy access to bars and eateries. Bus stops were only a few blocks away, including those headed to/from Balboa Park, as was the famous San Diego trolley. Even a water taxi to Coronado was a 10min walk away, just behind the convention center. And of course Petco Park, home of the MLB Padres, is like a block behind and down from the Courtyard. So great location for sightseeing and play tourist (which I was!).||As far as the hotel itself, it's a small property. But it has amenities just as good as larger ones. There's a small cafe on the second floor for morning coffee and pastries. It has the typical Courtyard Market (which importantly had a microwave). And there's an awesome rooftop bar called "The Nolen" that offers great views of the city and good drinks; I didn't get a chance to try the food. Be aware that there's no complementary breakfast. But there are some tasty and affordable brunch spots just outside the hotel. ||The hotel staff was excellent. They were always very friendly and checked-in with me frequently via text to make sure my stay was comfortable.||The rooms were definitely on the smaller side (I had a double since I was traveling with my brother), but that's typical for a city hotel; space is always at a premium. The room was inviting, the bathroom was spacious and clean, and the beds were comfortable; I had no problems falling asleep after a night out or a day spent walking around. It was just enough space for two people; more than that and you might be stepping on each other. The room also had a mini-fridge, but it was confusing since it didn't appear to be always on. Not good for keeping leftovers. Seemed like I could only keep it cool for 2hrs at a time. Weird, but not a huge deal.||My room faced towards the street (west), so the bay window on an upper flower gave great views of the city. Also good for watching the hustle and bustle on the streets. ||The only negative with this hotel is the noise from outside during the evenings throughout the whole week. The pedicabs on the street often play loud music as they pass-by, or pick-up and drop-off people. Saturday night and Sunday night it gets much louder as there's a nightclub literally across the street that plays very loud music (good beats though) til about 1-2am on the weekends. The bass was loud/strong enough it vibrated the headboards of the bed! None of this is the hotel's fault; it's just something to be aware of if you're looking for peace and quiet at night. It's the city after all; it tends to be loud.||Overall, it's great hotel for tourists. I'd...
